I was just reading Meredith's Report from Barr Lake today, and wanted to add that I had similar results banding at Clear Spring Ranch today, I arrived about 6:30, just as showers were moving West over the freeway, and birds were immediately seen moving, as they were yesterday - coming in over the hay fields and into the brush (and net areas). The difference today was that the sparrows arriving were Clay-colored, and only around noon did Chipping Sparrows in any number arrive. It was crazy.
Spizella sparrows dominated the counts here, too. 3 Brewers Sparrows, 61 Chipping Sparrows, and 95 Clay-colored Sparrows, when my previous day high number for CCSP was about 12!
Again, only a handful of warblers (6 Wilson's), but also FOS Virginia's Warbler (juv F), and FOS Blue-gray Gnatcatcher (juv F). 191 birds caught today. I was still catching birds while closing nets! And they were still moving through the fields and over the willows as I left at 2:00. Wow.
Quite a week!
