Re: [cobirds] Re: Wash Park Scoter questions?

Thanks, again, to everyone who responded to my query!

Several of us saw the bird this afternoon — about 1:30.  It was between the "point" and the island.  The best vantage point was from the tennis courts, since there's so much of the shoreline (especially at the point) that is roped off.  The lighting was pretty poor, but it was clear that it was the scoter — size, bill shape, behavior, etc.

Unlike what many have said, when we saw it, it was diving with a bunch of buffles.

[cobirds] Female Magnificent Hummingbird, Boulder County, 10/31

Bird was seen this morning. (She is on a 3:1 mix, per suggestion, for the energy boost but hasn't left yet. She also seems healthy and quite the invertebrate catcher, so I don't know that lack of sustenance is a problem.)

The birds seem cooperative for viewing, probably less frequently at the feeder when sunny (and maybe she is off bug zapping.) Mornings perhaps more present than evening.

[cobirds] Surf scoter still at Wash Park, Denver County

Hi all,

A small group of birders was treated to some close looks of the surf scoter in the south area of Grasmere Lake around 3:30 today, October 30. The scoter was near the south shore by the tennis courts. After about ten minutes, the bird swam away toward the east shore of the lake.

Good birding,

Mary Keithler, Arapahoe County, near Cherry Creek State Park

[cobirds] Re: Swans in Fort Collins

Hey all,

I think these were actually 2 young Mute Swans at Fossil Creek Park. I forgot there were two parks/natural areas named Fossil Creek. I hope none of you are already looking for them at the reservoir! Nick Komar says that they have been there for the last couple days and don't have any signs of captive origin.

Thanks!

[cobirds] Golden-crowned Sparrow, Boulder County 10/30

Amazingly, the Golden-crowned Sparrow that Scott Severs found at the Teller Farms trailhead on Valmont Road in November 2010 has returned to the same location for a fifth winter!  We can only imagine where it goes during the summer.

Directions to the trailhead are at http://coloradocountybirding.org/BySite.aspx?SiteID=373&CountyID=7
This morning, the Golden-crowned Sparrow was moving around a lot with a flock of White-crowned Sparrows among weeds that are very tall this year.  So, a search of the junipers and tall weeds anywhere within about 100 yards of the trailhead might be necessary to find the bird.

[cobirds] upcoming bird walk, Equalizer Lake (Larimer Co.)

Hi,

Join the High Plains Environmental Center for a morning of birding around Equalizer Lake in Loveland this Sunday Nov. 2.  We will walk approx. 2 miles on sidewalks and on level walking paths to observe gulls, waterfowl, sparrows and other birds.  The extensive mudflat at the south end of the reservoir usually attracts many birds.  The water bodies themselves should hold many waterbirds as well.

Meet at the parking lot at HPEC, which is located at 1854 Piney River Drive in the Centerra neighborhood in Loveland.  We will walk to the lake at 8am.  This area is easily reached from Rte. 34 exit of I-25.  The walk should end around 10:30.

Come out and join us for fall migration.

Scott Baron
Loveland, Colo.

[cobirds] White-winged Dove Mini-invasion, 10/29 and 10/30, El Paso County

Hi, everyone.

Yesterday morning and this morning our feeders have been inundated with doves. Right now there are 2 Mourning Doves, 10 Eurasian Collared Doves, and 12 White-winged Doves.

We have had 2, 3, and even 4 White-winged Doves year-round for the last 3 years, but nothing like this. On one feeder where we have hulled sunflower seeds, they are actually stacked on top of one another. Rather comical to see.

Good birding, all!

[cobirds] John Martin Res/Hasty (Bent) on 10/29

Highlights at Hasty/Lake Hasty/John Martin Res yesterday, 10/29:

Sandhill Cranes (we estimated 11,000!! flew over, with this probably being a woefully low count of what was within sight in all directions, one of the events that makes birding the eastern plains of Colorado a joy at this time of year)

Snow Goose (18, FOS)
Dunlin (2, maybe 3, reported earlier by Duane Nelson, about mid-way along the north shore, access via network of roads from RdJJ)
Rock Wren (2, in rocks along the north side of res)
Canyon Wren (2, ditto)
Osprey (1, southeast of campground along outlet)
Eastern Phoebe (1, just south of the dam on the road and rocks on the Lake Hasty side)
Red-breasted Merganser (at least 40, FOS)
Long-billed Dowitcher (75+, along the north shore)
Stilt Sandpiper (1, along the north shore)
5 species of grebes, but no Red-necked, which Duane had reported recently
American Avocet (still at least 100), Least Sandpiper (5), Baird's Sandpiper (1), several of both yellowlegs
Common Loon (1)
NO Red-throated Loon, which Duane had reported recently

Tens of thousands of waterfowl to sort thru, water level low (lots of fish groping for air), probably things we missed

[cobirds] White-winged junco, Sloan Lake, Denver

This morning in a flock of pink-sided juncos I had a distinct white-winged junco in the flock.

The birds were near the restrooms / playground on the S. side of the park near the parking lot.

[cobirds] Uncommon birds 10/29

Today, I started out the morning in Coal Creek Canyon and got great views of the female Magnificent Hummingbird.   Thanks to Adam Jack for allowing everyone to view this rare Colorado hummingbird.  I then headed to Washington Park and saw the accommodating immature Surf Scoter(Thanks to Joe Roller for reporting this bird).  My luck ran out as I headed to Red Rocks hoping that the Golden-crowned Sparrow would return for the fifth straight year.  No luck!  I have been trying to take millet up 2-3 times a week but the seed is long gone every time I return. If anyone heads to Red Rocks please throw some seed down.  This area seems to always attract some good birds with consistent food behind the trading post.  A few photos of today's birds can be seen in the gallery below:

[cobirds] 11/13 Front Range trip- everyone is welcome!

Hey all,
On November 13th, I'm planning on birding some lakes and reservoirs along the front range, i.e., Longmont and Boulder area. Anyone and everyone is welcome to join in, the more the merrier. I'm planning on starting at McIntosh Reservoir (NW Longmont at the Flanders park entrance) early in the morning, around 7am, and working my way around. You're more than welcome to jump in for part or all of the day. I'd like to get to know more birders in my area, so please please come if you can make it. I'm still working out the details, but I wanted to get the word out first to see if anyone is interested. You're welcome to email me at knitter5d@gmail.com or reply here.
Thanks!

[cobirds] Another Day In The Park 10/28

Park County, that is…and South Park mostly. Yesterday (10/28) I visited all the birding bodies of water, some high forest, and some lower Ponderosa forest. 17 degrees at sunrise was the low, but the day warmed to the low 50s, and it was unexpectedly calm much of the day. Highlights included below are White-winged and Surf Scoters, Red Phalarope, Pacific Loon, 14 (!) Common Loons, and McCown's Longspur.

Near sunrise, a flock of 110 American Crows feeding at a carcass near Jefferson provided a high count for Park County. A little later, a male Am. Three-toed Woodpecker made himself apparent at Hoosier Pass along Highway 9. Some stops along County Road (CR) 8 out of Alma provided 21 Red Crossbills (Type 5), one Pine Grosbeak, and one Nor. Goshawk.

Buffalo Creek Reservoir had one each of female White-winged Scoter and female Surf Scoter, foraging amid a flock of Bufflehead, one Common Loon, one male Greater Scaup and four Hooded Mergs. This reservoir is near the start of Pike NF Road 433, off Highway 285 a few miles north of the junction with Highway 24.

All three of the big reservoirs had large numbers of water birds, perhaps inflated by movement associated with the cold front the day before. I list composite counts of some of the regular species below after the highlights of each site individually.

Highlights at Antero Reservoir were 1 Pacific Loon, 3 Common Loons, 9 Long-billed Dowitchers (SBDO eliminated by default, really, as they were a long ways off), 1 Clark's Grebe, 8 Bonaparte's Gulls and 2 Franklin's Gulls. Still 8 American Avocets present. 2 or 3 Prairie Falcons

Spinney Mountain Reservoir had 3 Common Loons (one calling often), 1 Peregrine Falcon, and 1 Bald Eagle.

Eleven Mile Reservoir had a Red Phalarope, 7 Common Loons, 14 Greater Scaup, 1 Franklin's Gull, and 2 Bald Eagles. A McCown's Longspur was with numerous Horned Larks along CR 59 near the central section of the reservoir. There will still three young Western Grebes begging from their parents at this reservoir.

Composite totals for some waterbirds from these three reservoirs: Gadwall (1845), American Wigeon (1220), Mallard (142), Nor. Shoveler (69), Nor. Pintail (150), Green-winged Teal (98), Canvasback (143), Redhead (1115), Ring-necked Duck (40), Lesser Scaup (790), Bufflehead (2065), Common Merganser (18), Ruddy Duck (1075), Eared Grebe (290), Western Grebe (325), American Coot (11,700).

I made 10 stops in Ponderosa pine forest (with spruce in some areas) along roads south and southeast of Eleven Mile Res., including CR 100, 98, 61 and Forest Road 234. Areas rich in cone crops had large numbers of the interesting fringillids. Red Crossbills were locally abundant; I noted over 550 on my 10 stops. Ninety percent were Type 2, but there were also Type 5, and some spots had both together. Evening Grosbeaks were delightfully common; I detected about 150. Most of these were along Pine NF Road 234 off CR 98 at the intersection with CR 100. Indeed, stops along Road 234 in for about a mile off CR 98 were really fun. At one spot my pygmy-owl imitation and attracted over 50 interested crossbills clustering in the trees around me, along with a bluster of other species. And then I attracted a real Northern Pygmy-Owl and all the littler birds went ballistic! I also saw a tardy Lewis's Woodpecker along Road 234, flying south.

Lake George had the usual suspects, with a tardy Double-crested Cormorant and Virginia Rail being the only birds of note, plus two Hooded Mergs. Tarryall Reservoir was a disappointment with no waterbirds at all.

After dark, in the cold, I detected a Boreal Owl along Weston Pass Road. Some Nor. Saw-whet Owls were pretty vocal in areas of Ponderosa or mixed forest near Bailey.

[cobirds] Common Loons at Pueblo Res. 10/29

Since I haven't birded Pueblo Reservoir for a while, and I heard from Margie Joy that there were Common Loons around Pueblo Reservoir yesterday, I decided to go out there this morning and check things out.  I didn't go over to the South Shore Marina, where there appears to be a good number of gulls.

There were at least 11 Common Loons (8 in middle/eastern part of the Reservoir, and 3 more in the western part of the Reservoir).  Other highlights for me, were two Bonaparte's Gulls and a female Red-breasted Merganser.  Five species of grebes, and a some ducks were also present on the lake.

[cobirds] American Dipper, Cherry Creek Trail, downtown Denver

All,

My first of the year american dipper was calling and very active under the pedestrian bridge over the Platte River at REI.

If you park at REI or the nearby parking lot south of the Speer Bridge, you can walk across the pedestrian bridge over the rapids and listen for the bird... it won't take long to see it hopping along or flying to a new perch.

[cobirds] Common Loon, Fort Collins (Larimer County)

There was a Common Loon at Claymore Lake in northwest Fort Collins this morning while I was there between 8:00 and 8:30.  I saw the bird flying over the lake yesterday, as well, but it headed off to the east.  This morning the bird was on the water in the middle of the lake and diving regularly.

Claymore Lake is a private lake, but good views (especially with a scope) are available from the parking lot for Reservoir Ridge Open Space.  This is the "old" entrance to the Open Space, this parking lot being the one at the end of Michaud Lane, off of Overland Trail.

[cobirds] Field trip announcement: Great Boulder Caper, Fri., Nov. 28

Hello, Birders.

Join the Boulder Bird Club for the 4th annual Great Boulder Caper, Black Friday, Nov. 28, 2014. The capering starts at 7:30 a.m. at Cottonwood Marsh, off 75th St., in eastern Boulder County. We'll (mostly) bird all day, (constantly) eat leftovers, and (maybe) even go shopping. Birders of all interest levels are welcome; non-birding companions and general curiosity-seekers are especially welcome. You don't have to be with us all day; like Huckleberry Finn, you may come and go as you please. Some amount of jury-rigged carpooling is inevitable.

As to the birding, we can expect good numbers and diversity of ducks; grebes and maybe a loon or two; lots of gulls; and diverse land birds. We'll be out at an excellent time of year for Swamp Sparrows and Marsh Wrens. With so many eyes and ears--and tryptophan-fueled imaginations--we're likely to find a rarity or two. Here's a recap of last year's Caper:

https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/cobirds/JGOsgW6XnVg

No RSVP required, but feel free to contact me by email (tedfloyd57 "at" HoTMaiL "dot" com) with any questions.

I hope to see many of you on Black Friday!

[cobirds] Female Magnificent Hummingbird / Boulder County

Hey Folks,

The magnificent hummingbird was cooperative again yesterday, and has shown this morning.

Further, from the deck there was one dark morph broad-winged hawk (not ID'ed by me, but obviously a different species to me than normal), various Bald Eagle, and one possible Golden eagle. A Northern harrier, some Cooper's Hawk's and some Red-tailed Hawks. Most, but these last two, were likely migrating through.

Common birds are Hairy/Downey Woodpeckers, Mountain/Black-capped Chickadees, Dark-eyed Juncos, White-brested and Pigmy Nuthatches, Townsend Solitaire, Clark's Nutcracker, Stellar's Jay and various others.

If you visit, please keep a little back from the bird. She is skittish and feel pressure if we get close to the feeders or move about to rapidly.

regards

Adam

[cobirds] White-throated Sparrow & Merlin - GJWA - Mesa County

Had a good morning of birding at the Grand Junction Wildlife Area (GJWA), which is near the confluence of the Colorado and Gunnison Rivers in Grand Junction.

Lots of sparrows including an adult White-striped White-throated Sparrow, 6 Lincoln's Sparrows, about 20 Chipping Sparrows(down in numbers from several days ago), plus numerous Gambel's White-crowned Sparrows, Song Sparrows, and Dark-eyed Juncos (mostly Pink-sided & Oregon).  Spotted Towhees (8) made the 7th sparrow species.

Also had a Merlin hunting from a perch and on the wing.  Observed a young Cooper's Hawk carrying a junco in his talons.

Also observed an unusual Red-tailed Hawk which I think is a dark morph Western Red-tailed.  Saw the bird circling and the body was uniform black with a light rufous red tail.
Looked like a Harlan's Hawk with a red tail, so I'm not positive of the ID.

[cobirds] 'Red' Fox Sparrow, Ft. Collins (Larimer Co.); Oct. 28

Hi,

I birded parts of the CSU campus today.  On the west side of the arboretum, I got a good but brief look at a 'Red' Fox Sparrow on the ground near the fence line.  It was maybe a couple hundred feet north of Lake St.  I am familiar with this subspecies from migration and winter in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast.  This is the time of year that southbound migrants show up there at this latitude.  Reddish brown and gray, including red-brown streaks below.   I had to leave for a meeting soon afterward but I may have time to search for it again tomorrow.  It was presumably part of the junco flock that was there.

The arboretum is located in between Lake and Pitkin streets on the southwest part campus.

[cobirds] Red-neck Grebe--CC Res

Hi all

Randy Lenrtz and I saw a Red-necked Grebe at Cherry Creek Res from the east side, south of the swim beach, from the picnic tables all in a row, at 11:00 this morning. The grebe was swimming amongst Western Grebes, first noticed by dingy gray neck, whitish cheeks and long-ish bill (not as long as Western Grebe) and its bill slightly turned downward from side profile.
