[cobirds] Giving Tuesday, Why not give to the Joe Roller Memorial Grant?

All,
I'm sure many of you have gotten 20 other emails about Giving Tuesday. However, there's no better day to make a pledge per species or a flat donation to the Joe Roller Memorial Grant managed by Colorado Field Ornithologists! We are getting closer to raising $35,000 (!!!) to support small grants for bird research in Colorado! Thank you to everyone who has pledged or donated. The support for the Joe Roller Memorial Green Big Year has been tremendous! We are helping to support research grants for the next generations of ornithologists, and that's pretty special. The small grants like what CFO supports were really instrumental to me as a graduate student needing field supplies and just trying to get to my study sites to do bird surveys!

Pledge or donate here to the Joe Roller Memorial Grant.

Here's the latest blog post about the Tundra Swans in Jefferson Co. (#278) last week.

Totals as of 29 Nov:
Green Big Year species list: 279
Miles ridden: 2815
# of trips to Chatfield State Park: 45
2021 Joe Roller Memorial Green Big Year Species List

Thank you!

[cobirds] Re: Access for Anna's Hummingbird in Boulder CO

Hey Josh,

I was talking to Steve (homeowner and finder) yesterday and it sounded like they were expecting more visitors today. I would suggest late morning to early afternoon since the hummer seemed more active at that time. The earliest it was seen was 11:45 yesterday and it was fairly regular at his feeder near the patio every 30 to 45 minutes.

Enter the back garden via the gate to the right of the garage.

Cheers,

[cobirds] Different looking Red-winged Blackbd yesterday, El Paso

Greetings, COBirders,

Just seeking thoughts, confirmation, or plumage/molt information about an immature Red-winged Blackbird that was at one of my feeders & birdbath by itself yesterday. Not like other immature male or female Red-wingeds I've seen before. (At first I thought it might be a female Tri-colored.)  Its undersides were darker & more speckled rather than streaked, in a less contrasting gray-&-beige than the more distinctive, bold streaking I'm familiar with in female Red-wingeds, and not like immature males I generally see either. No submoustachial stripe, but it did have a mildly orange wingbar. Yet this one's bill is thicker like a Red-winged rather than more slender like a Tri-colored.

I see Sibley's Guide to Birds indicates that some "1st summer male" Red-wingeds resemble Tri-coloreds, and that Red-wingeds intergrade with Bi-coloreds at the edges of the latter's range in California. And Natl Geo's Complete Birds of North America warns of difficulty differentiating female Red-wingeds (in California) from female Tri-coloreds...but of course we're not that close to California.

Male Red-winged in Formative or "Basic I" Plumage, per Birds of the World website?
See pics in eBird post, link below.

Thanks,

[cobirds] RE: Surf Scoter/Common Grackle - Chatfield SP

Quick follow up correction.  Heard that some folks had been seeing a pair of White-winged Scoters today out at Chatfield, so will back off my “Surf” identification given I didn’t really fully eliminate White-winged as a possibility.  To be honest, the scoters were sleeping the entire time I watched them, and noticed no white at all except for their white auricular patches (didn’t see their bills either), so made my call on “jizz” alone (seemed short and stocky) but only had a few Eared Grebes for direct comparison, so not a great comparative.  I’ll be entering as “scoter sp.” when I get to uploading to eBird just in case there was more than one pair out there today.  Sorry for any confusion or wild “scoter” chases I may have sparked.

Good Birding,

Doug

Stopped into Chatfield State Park this morning (JeffCo-Douglas Co./ 27 Nov.’21) and made a quick check of the lake, ending up with a couple good ones.  First was a pair of immature/female type SURF SCOTERs off of the Fox Run picnic area in with a mixed raft of WESTERN, EARED, and HORNED GREBES.  Also out in the delta were three (3) immature/female type RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS.  Best bird though may have been a male COMMON GRACKLE at the Kingfisher Bridge parking area.  Thought folks might like to try for the scoters, so hence this post.

[cobirds] Re: Brant in Fort Collins on 19Nov2021 (Larimer)

Found a (another?) Brant at the pond near the entrance to the ELC (CSU Environmental Learning Center) around noon today. In among the 2000+ Canada/Cackling Geese. Also with one Greater White-fronted and at least 3 Snow Geese.  Took off (towards Rigden Reservoir) before I could get photos. Maybe the same as the Sheldon Lake (City Park) bird? or maybe a different individual?

[cobirds] A couple of Lake Hasty (Bent County) birds

Birders,

The Lake Hasty area provides a welcome respite from the intensive
hunting activity around John Martin Reservoir this time of year. A few
interesting birds were here on November 27th.

A Long-tailed Duck has been present on South Lake Hasty on both November
26th and today. I think this is a different bird than the one I reported
on November 18th.

I saw a Greater White-fronted Goose with many Cackling Geese on North
Lake Hasty today. I saw presumably the same individual on November 23rd,
but missed it on intervening days. It seems like a lot of geese come in
after feeding in nearby fields in mid-morning, and sometimes, the
Greater White-fronted Goose joins them.

A Snow Bunting called in flight over Lake Hasty today.

There are still multiple species of shorebirds present, especially in
the stilling basin below the dam. Unfortunately, fishermen seem to
really like the gravel bars where the shorebirds gather, and when they
are there, shorebirds are not. As recently as November 26th, there were
36 Killdeer and 4 Least Sandpipers present, and on November 22nd, a
possibly-wintering Spotted Sandpiper was in the same area. Greater
Yellowlegs still present prefer the river or islands in Lake Hasty. A
fact of life here this time of year is cold nights, and there is often a
rim of ice along parts of Lake Hasty, the Arkansas River, or west end of
the Reservoir.

Hasty Campground now has two White-breasted Nuthatches, but Eastern
Bluebirds, Red-bellied Woodpeckers and Wild Turkeys are a no-show so far
this winter there. There are still American White Pelicans and
Double-crested Cormorants present, seen from the dam, but large numbers
of waterfowl have yet to appear.

[cobirds] Great Boulder Caper 2021

Friday, November 26, a small group of birders set out to continue the Great Boulder Caper started by Ted Floyd about 15 years ago.  Undeterred by COVID or turkey hangovers, Hannah Floyd, Alejo Williams, Megan Jones Patterson, and Elena Klaver met at Walden Ponds and began birding Walden and Sawhill Ponds.  We spent about two hours there, as the temperature rose to almost summer levels, with no bird surprises, but some spanking hooded mergansers, good numbers of waterfowl, and possibly a record number of muskrats (8-10).  We then drove through Boulder County's Raptor Alley, Lookout Road between 75th and 95th, where we had two ferruginous hawks and two immature bald eagles, as well as a couple of red tailed hawks, but not the northern harriers who have sometimes graced that area.  After dropping off Alejo, the three of us went to Greenlee Preserve/Waneka Lake, where the geese did not disappoint.  There were large numbers of cackling geese, Canada geese, a probable snow/cackling goose, a probable Ross's/cackling goose, and a hatch year snow goose, who was grayish white with a dark bill (ID thanks to Ted Floyd texting from the Qatar airport with Hannah's photos). Finally, with Hannah having to leave for academic pursuits, Megan and Elena continued to Hecla Lake, where another snow/cackling hybrid was lounging with numerous other cackling and Canada geese, and other waterfowl.  A wonderful day was had by all, with the caper ending around 1:45.  The weather was wonderfully mild, compared to some years where it has been bitterly cold, and we had a wonderful time upholding the tradition of birding instead of shopping.

[cobirds] Cattle Egret, Lower Bluestem Trail, Boulder

Hi folks!

Was quite surprised to find a cattle egret on a hike against the flatirons today on the Lower Bluestem trail in south Boulder. It was hanging out with a herd of cattle at a water tank about a mile up the trail. The cows weren't sure what to make of it and didn't seem too happy about it. They kept chasing it — it would fly up briefly and land not too far away.

A quick look at EBird suggests the last November cattle egret sighting was in 2012.

Checklist here

[cobirds] Re: Anna's Hummingbird in Boulder

I was asked to explain why this bird is an Anna's Hummingbird. I'm going off of two general things; structure, and plumage pattern. Structurally, it's chunky for a hummingbird. By plumage, first note that the dark feathers in the throat are colored iridescent feathers (a gorget). The pattern fits for a female Anna's Hummingbird over young male Archilochus hummingbirds. Also notice how the GRAY underparts transition gradually to greenish flanks and back. The pale areas of the throat are also grayish. In Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, these areas (throat and chest) would be very white, contrasting more with the rest of the bird. The same would be true for Costa's Hummingbird. Anna's Hummingbirds lack a bright white chest that most other hummingbirds in the US show. Another thing pointing away from Costa's Hummingbird is how far down the throat the iridescent pattern reaches.

In the third photo, one of the iridescent throat feathers is angled right to show color. Pink, like in Anna's Hummingbird.

[cobirds] Lincoln's Sparrow - SW Denver

We had a surprise, and very late, LINCOLN’S SPARROW show up in our yard today (Athmar Park Neighborhood, SW Denver, Denver Co. / 25 Nov.’21).  This guy or gal has an injured right eye, though otherwise seems healthy.  In addition to our new visitor, the adult WHITE-THROATED SPARROW which showed up a couple of weeks ago is still around and generally pretty cooperative.  If you have any interest in stopping by to try for either of these sparrows, please let me know separately.

Happy Thanksgiving,

[cobirds] Snow Buntings, Morgan Cty 11-25-2021

Hi everyone,

While birding Jackson Reservoir State Park this morning looking mostly for waterfowl, I chanced into a pair of calm and confiding Snow Buntings (SNBU) along the path/road on the dike, on the south edge of the reservoir. I was excited since this is only my second SNBU encounter ever in Colorado, the first being almost 13 years ago in Weld County. There have not been many reports of Snow Buntings in Colorado this year, so I thought it worth the mention here on CoBirds. I was able to snap several decent digiscoped shots before losing sight of them. I believe they were both males in nonbreeding (basic) plumage, but I am still pretty unfamiliar with this species so I may be mistaken. In addition to the SNBUs, I also spotted and photographed a female Black Scoter hanging out with some Lesser Scaup.

I was surprised to discover though that the eBird app did not flag SNBU as 'R', i.e., requiring documentation. When I got home I looked up more information and learned that indeed Snow Bunting sightings in Morgan County also do not require documentation for the Colorado Bird Records Committee either. Despite this ease of reporting SNBU however, eBird shows very few SNBU records all-time for Morgan County. Before my sighting today at Jackson SP, only one other prior record of Snow Bunting exists in eBird for Morgan, a sighting reported by Van Remsen on New Years Eve of 1972! Who knew?

On that note, let's all find some more handsome and intriguing Snow Buntings to close out the year. You can see images of the discussed species at my list, linked here:

Happy Thanksgiving to all,
Eric
