RE: [cobirds] Re: Scoter pics, Denver

Art,

Apparently you don't follow your own email address advice as you are quite confused and you should know of what you speak before you speak.

Tom was thanking me for pointing out the birds to him today.  He hadn't yet found them when I got there and I happened to pick them out first and showed them to him.

And I'm curious; can you point me to where this "world of birding" rule you mention appears?  I don't recall seeing it in the ABA Birding Ethics but I'm glad you are the keeper of the "world of birding" rules and regulations for all of us uneducated posters.

Hi all,

Heard and then saw a Winter Wren this afternoon along the Twin Lakes Trail in Gunbarrel, about 1/3 mile west of 63rd street and 100 yards east of Robinson Place, on the north side of the creek.  Call notes were those of Winter, not Pacific Wren.

The Brant remains at Houts Reservoir in the same location on the SW side
of the reservoir as of 11am today. It was associated with three Canada
geese and was cooperative for photos. There were several Bonaparte's
gulls and female common mergansers along with the usual suspects out on
the water as well.

[cobirds] Little Gull - Terry Lake

To add to what Eric noted, we returned to the east side of Terry lake a half hour later and the Little Gull was roosting with Bonaparte’s and Ring-billed Gulls in the east bay providing us with a closet view.  It looks like a 1st basic plumage bird with more than a smattering of retained juvenile feathers.

Another great find by Steve Mlodinow!!!!

[cobirds] Little Gull, Terry Lake, Boulder

Hi all,

Like Cathy posted earlier, the Little Gull was present this morning at Terry Lake.

I ran into John Vanderpoel, Peter Gent, Joyce Takamine and Maggie Boswell there, first on the west side of the lake but a bit later on the east side. In the mornings, that is certainly the better viewing option. To get to the east side, exit US 287 west at (what I think is) county road 4. The dirt road goes for about a mile before it ends at a private driveway entrance, but from there you can have nice backlit morning views of a good portion of the reservoir. It was from that with John's help we were all able eventually to locate and to get on the bird.

Even from there, the bird was never close, but the more favorable light made it easier to separate the bird from the few dozen Bonaparte's Gulls that are also currently working the reservoir. A scope is definitely necessary to get anything resembling a good look at it.

Oh, and this was a lifer for me. Thanks to Steve Mlodinow for his timely reporting of this bird!

Good luck to anyone else looking for this bird,

Eric

Just found a Surf Scoter and a lifer Black Scoter on Ferril Lake at Denver City Park. The two are hanging out together on the lake's west side. Joe R. was able to join and snap some pictures. Very viewable - no scope was needed. Eared Grebe also present.

Easiest access is by parking in the lot between Ferril Lake and Duck Lake by the Pavilion.

Fwd: [cobirds] BRANT - YES, Houts Res, Larimer

Hi, birders.

I, too, birded Equalizer Lake and saw the (Atlantic) Brant today (Thursday).  At 5pm the bird was on the west side of Houts Reservoir swimming with 3 Canada Geese.  I didn't see the Brant when I birded Equalizer on Monday but I did not have time to walk around Houts.  Perhaps the bird was feeding on the path, out of sight, on that morning.

On Monday I did observe an adult Lesser Black-backed Gull, I imagine this was the same bird that was previously reported.  American Tree Sparrows were present in between the trail and the marsh vegetation on the west side of Equalizer Lake on both days.  Today an first winter Harris' Sparrow was there, too.

Take care,

Scott Baron

Cowboy - my little red dachshund - and I, went for a nice walk around Houts today. As we were approaching the area where the Brant has been seen, I spotted it. Then I was passed by a runner that almost tripped over the Brant as it slowly scurried out of his way.

The birds kept walking to the water as Cowboy and I walked toward them staying on the trail.

Great bird. There was also the light-ish Canada and then a Very Large Goose - Canada with an injured wing with them also.

[cobirds] Red Phalarope Continues at Flooded Tower Road Field - Commerce City Adams County

The Red Phalarope was in the large puddle on the east side of Tower Road, approximately where 100th Ave would cross, around 11am this Wednesday morning.  It was not there at 2pm this afternoon.  Also of note were an avocet and a white-faced ibis that have been previously reported there.  The ibis was feeding close to the road and seemed oblivious to the people there, it came within 20 - 30 feet of us.

[cobirds] Rock Pigeons and eBird

Greetings All

Rock Pigeons occur across a fair portion of the world as a native species. In many of those places, birders are interested in entering wild-type Rock Pigeons as something different than the mutt-type feral Rock Pigeons. In the USA, basically all of our pigeons originate from the feral type, even those breeding in more "natural" locations (which also, interestingly, seem to look more like "true" Rock Pigeons). In any case, this is just a bit of a warning that the only choice on eBird in the USA will soon be feral Rock Pigeon. It will not change list totals or such. They are working on a category for entering captive (eg, homing pigeons) as a third type of entry, one that would not count on lists.

Cheers

[cobirds] SCOTERS - Denver City Park

Just found a Surf Scoter and a lifer Black Scoter on Ferril Lake at Denver City Park. The two are hanging out together on the lake's west side. Joe R. was able to join and snap some pictures. Very viewable - no scope was needed. Eared Grebe also present.

Easiest access is by parking in the lot between Ferril Lake and Duck Lake by the Pavilion.

Wow!!

Good birding,

[cobirds] Dusky Grouse, Boulder (City & Cty), 10/30 12:30 pm

I haven't been birding much lately for a number of reasons, but was pleasantly surprised on my way back from Denver by a female Dusky Grouse flying east to west across Rte. 36 just north of the Table Mesa overpass.  I reversed direction at the Baseline exit and found the grouse between the Table Mesa exit ramp and the parking lot behind the High Mar US Post Office on Moorhead Ave.

[cobirds] Rocky Mountains arsenal swamp sparrow yes black scoter no Adams County

Following Doug's posting yesterday I decided to make a try for the black Scoter and Swamp Sparrow today.

The Swamp sparrow had moved over to the south east side of Lake Mary. This lake is immediately adjacent to Lake Ladora, the sparrow is hanging out near the closed bridge, and was seen in one of the younger cottonwoods.

[cobirds] RFI - Pagosa Springs - Boreal Owl, Winter Birding

Dear CoBirders,

I am so excited to be heading back to Pagosa Springs but this is my first trip in winter.  We will be renting a home in Pagosa for the Christmas holidays (Dec. 19th - 26th) and I was hoping to get some possible locations for Boreal Owl that are reasonably accessible.  Happy to get any other great winter birding locations or feeders in town that are accessible.  I do have Holt's book and the Birding Trail on-line information, just hoping to get some up-to-date current locations that might not be listed.

Would be more than happy to meet up with a local birder as well for a day or so.

Thanks so much and I am happy to return the favor to anyone visiting Central Texas at any time!

[cobirds] Harlan's Red-tailed Hawk in eastern Pueblo County

I spotted my first of the season Harlan's Red-tailed Hawk this afternoon in eastern Pueblo County.  I was able to get a few good photos of it in flight and I have uploaded them to my Birds and Nature blog.  I looked with negative results for additional Harlan's Hawks going east through La Junta where they are known to spend the fall/winter.

I have a few more photos to put up, and a wee bit more commentary to add, but some photos from my trip last weekend to Washington State are at http://www.flickr.com/photos/36088296@N08/

Many of these are relevant to CO, including photos of the eastern race of Pacific Wren (salebrosus) which resembles Winter Wren, and adult Iceland Gull, and cruddy pics of a Vega Herring Gull

[cobirds] Pueblo birds 10/29

A few highlights today around Pueblo Reservoir:

Laughing Gull - 1 adult basic plumage was seen in the SWA, looking west
Lesser Black-backed Gull - 1 first year off West Fishing Road looking west
Common Loon - 1 middle of the Reservoir, I saw it from the South Shore Marina

Below the dam in Rock Canyon, there were three White-throated Sparrows (two adults and one immature).

Yesterday, there was a Juniper Titmouse with Mountain Chickadees in the juniper trees at the parking lot at West Fishing Road at Pueblo Reservoir.

I photographed a very late Western Kingbird in Pueblo, on 26 October.  http://www.flickr.com/photos/brandonsbirdphotos/10542111144/in/set-72157637059423143

Any kingbird in Colorado, this late needs to be looked at carefully, unfortunately this bird wasn't a Tropical/Couch's Kingbird or a Thick-billed Kingbird, which might show up this late in the year.  One Thick-billed Kingbird did show up in late October in the early 1990s in Denver.

Brandon Percival -- Pueblo West, CO

[cobirds] Rocky Mountain Arsenal, Adams CO.

The previously reported Swamp Sparrow in the marsh on the SW corner of Lake Ladora was still present this afternoon.
It proved easier to see than the female Black Scoter on adjacent Lower Derby Lake, given the huge number of coots and diving ducks present.

[cobirds] Golden-crowned Sparrow--Red Rocks/Jeffco

Today, as I pulled into the Red Rocks Trading Post I saw the post by Christian Nunes that the Teller Farm's Golden-crowned Sparrow returned.  The feeders and the ground were void of seed.  I threw down some millet and waited for the birds to show up.  The first bird out of the thicket was the dapper Golden-crowned Sparrow!!  This is the fourth year this bird has wintered at Red Rocks.  He first showed up as an immature in the winter of 2009. I watched the area for 45 minutes and had Scrub Jays(10), White-crowned Sparrow(1), Song Sparrows(3) Juncos(10), Spotted Towhees(3), Pine Sisken(1), and the other typical Red Rocks birds.  This is the time of the year when the Red Rocks feeders can get interesting!  Photos of this bird can be seen at the gallery below:

[cobirds] Situation at Two Buttes Reservoir (Baca)

The situation at Two Buttes Reservoir is mixed.

I went east off US287 south of Lamar on Prowers County C/B.5 Road, then south on a road (12 Road?, unmarked in the DeLorme Atlas) that ultimately becomes 29.5(?) and then angles se to 30 Road once one crosses into Baca County.

The reservoir itself is currently relatively full of water (relative to recent years) and has dropped a few feet from the unbelievable 35 foot depth it achieved a few months ago.  Yesterday the water supported good numbers of waterfowl, including thousands of American Coots and hundreds of Ruddy Ducks.  Small numbers of other common species were present.  There was one Western Grebe, a few Eared Grebes, and one Double-crested Cormorant.  I understand the res has been stocked for recreational fishing.  A good grebe, loon, scoter, gull, swan, etc. certainly seems possible.  Yesterday's waterfowl report listing only common species should be tempered by the fact large areas of the northwest part of the reservoir are not viewable due to flooded cottonwoods and other access issues.

The only way to view the res is from the dam road itself looking west, and from access roads north of the dam that go west from the n-s county road (29.5/30 Road) running west of Two Buttes Mountain.  Follow signs for the "Boat Ramp".   The road over the dam (29.5/30 Road) is open but access to the south side of the res (and ultimately US287 on Baca VV Road) from the south side of the dam is closed.  Major earth work is underway south of the dam on both the east and west sides of the dam road to "prepare the spillway for a 10,000-year storm", according to a local DPW officer we talked to the other day.

The road below the dam, formerly accessed from the north side of the dam, is closed indefinitely.  Looking down into the area from the dam, it appears the major issue is a small but significant washout of the road just w of the wide parking area that accesses the area known locally as "The Black Hole".   Perhaps the road (unviewable from the dam) from the afforementioned parking area east to the private gate is also damaged.  Regardless, "no human activity" is allowed below the dam according to the closure sign and there is no indication of when access might be restored.  My guess would be several months, if not longer, but who knows?
