[cobirds] Birding in Baja

Greetings COBIRDERS

Nick Moore and I had a fabulous trip to Baja's Cape.
A photo album containing many of the bird (and bug) species seen can be viewed at

https://www.flickr.com/photos/36088296@N08/albums/72157661834021684

This trip (and editing the photos!) explains much of my recent relative absence from the local birding scene

Good Birding

[cobirds] correction to the woodcock parking situation at Bobcat Ridge Natural Area (Larimer)

Birders,
Ranger Karl Manderbach just informed me that when the main parking lot at Bobcat Ridge Natural Area is closed, parking to see the woodcock is limited to just a few spaces between the old corral and the south side of his office/residence.  Sometimes his City of FC vehicle is parked in this area, sometimes he is on patrol.  So, contrary to my recent post, do NOT park along the main roads leading in from CR27 or the one that goes north from the Bobcat Ridge NA parking lot to private residences to the north.  If the few spaces described above are full, then maybe come back at a different time or day.  Thank you for your cooperation with these requests/rules.

[cobirds] Larimer rarities - yes on 1/30

With Norma Verhoeff (who lives just west of Hasty, CO) I was able to see both the continuing Yellow-throated Warbler coming to the suet feeder of Luke and Helen at 1520 W. Mountain Avenue in Fort Collins, AND one of the American Woodcocks at Bobcat Ridge Natural Area sw of Masonville.  Both these birds had not been updated on the RBA or eBird since 21 January.  I assume this means everybody who wants to see them has seen them.  But for those who still would like to try, they are still present.

A couple comments about these two situations:

The warbler's daily schedule is very sporadic, but host Helen informs me it is more regular on cold days and sometime in the first hour after sunrise.  I have personally been there several times and only had it come in (minimum visit about an hour) about half of those visits.  In other words, if your time is limited (less than an hour) it is NOT a sure thing.

The parking lot and trails at Bobcat Ridge continue to be closed due to mud.  If we get significant snow tonight and tomorrow, there is a possibility the closures will be lifted.  If very light snow is all we get, then Ranger Karl informs me the closures will remain in effect.  And, of course, if there is a big snow allowing temporary lifting of the closures, more closures will follow when the big snow melts.  Plan your visit accordingly.  It is my understanding that you can still park along the road to look for the woodcock IF you are careful not to, in any way, impede traffic for the private residents who live north of the Bobcat Ridge parking lot.  Today the woodcock was in the stream, or just off the stream, amid leaves opposite Ranger Karl's residence.

[cobirds] White-throated Sparrow,Carbondale; Rosy-Finches, Snowmass etc

Hi all

An update from the Roaring Fork Valley as the ‘Pineapple Express’ knocks on the door. It’s mid 40’s F here this morning – a massive change from the usual single digits (or negative single digits) that we have been waking up to all month. Rain later today, then three days off/on snow. We’ll see.

Today:

Garfield Cty: The White-throated Sparrow is here again today in our backyard. A Raccoon is out and about – last night it pried open the feed bin.. Still plenty of Dark-eyed Juncos – of all four expected forms.. no White-wingeds here!

Eagle Cty: Lewis’s Woodpeckers continue to use the poles on the hill behind the house this morning – present throughout the day most days it seems

Yesterday:

Garfield Cty: A single female Cassin’s Finch visited briefly, FOY. In recent winters they have been very scarce here-about until spring migration

Thursday:

Pitkin Cty: About 100 Rosy-Finches at Snowmass Ski-area at my Sam’s Knob free bird talk.. all three species (one Black), many Gray-crowned, including Hepburns and many Brown-capped

Also 4 Pine Grosbeaks, several Mountain and a single Black-capped Chickadee, Steller’s Jays, Red-breasted Nuthatch

Higher up we then went in search of White-tailed Ptarmigan – but without success. We’ll try again next Thursday. My wife Denise has seen them twice recently whilst teaching skiing, and the ski-patrol are seeing them regularly too.

Wednesday:

Was thrilled to host Dave Leatherman for a few hours birding and then to hear his talk “What birds eat” at the jointly hosted Roaring Fork Audubon evening in Carbondale

Pitkin County: In Snowmass we saw plenty of Rosy-Finches (alas no Black), Evening Grosbeaks, mountain form Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers

Eagle County: Frying Pan river (Basalt to Ruedi) 1 Barrow’s Goldeneye male, 1 Common Goldeneye female, several American Dippers,  several Bald Eagles. We missed spotting 5 Bighorn Sheep that were close to town. Lewis’s Woodpecker 1 along the Frying Pan, and another on the power poles behind our house. Prairie Falcon immature female frequenting the same poles.

Good birding all

Drive safe (if at all !)

Best wishes

Dick Filby

[cobirds] South Park, Jan. 27 - Park

An addendum to our report from South Park about elk & rosy-finches.

The SCENERY. The mountains that surround South Park, snow-covered and spectacular, sparkled in the sun, formed backdrops in every direction. They made every minute memorable.

[cobirds] Rosy-finches in Park Co, white geese in Boulder Co

The rosy-finches previously reported by David Suddjian and the Kingeries were again at the feeders in Jefferson. 60-70 came to the feeders regularly. Predominantly Gray-crowned with a few Brown-capped and one Black. Driving home, I was surprised to see at least 3 white geese in a large (thousands) mixed waterfowl hoard at Burke Lake on the north side of Arapaho in Boulder Co. The flock comprised mostly white-cheeked geese, both Cackling and Canada. There was also a nice variety of ducks. Of the white geese, one appeared to be a Snow Goose, one a Ross's Goose, and the third possibly another Ross's. Best viewed from Park Lake Drive to avoid Arapaho traffic.

[cobirds] ? re:White-tailed Ptarmigan

In the amazing, stupendous, wonder 7 years I have lived in Colorado the White-tailed Ptarmigan has eluded me. In a month or so I will be a resident of upstate New York in the Catskills. The Ptarmigan is on my CO "bucket list". I saw my first Willow Ptarmigan in 2012 while visiting my great-grandfathers village "Hyypio" above the Arctic Circle in Finland.

So... if anyone has an absolute, for sure, guarantied, full proof Ptarmigan location recommendation please
share. I've tried most but I won't be discouraged!

Littleton, Douglas County, CO

May your winds be strong and your thermals high.
