[cobirds] Prothonotary Warbler, Centennial Park, Arapahoe County 12:13-4:03PM

The bird is very cooperative.
At 4:23 an odd sounding bird was encountered. A single Greater White-fronted Goose (adult) made a special visit to myself and two others.

[cobirds] Fremont county --- Black-and-white Warbler

COBirders,

I had some family stuff to do in Canon City today and after I had about two hours for a little birding.  I decided to hit a few private locations that are usually covered on the Penrose CBC and there were a couple of goodies.  The best bird of the day was a female BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER, just to help kick the total warbler species count up by one for the month of November.  Other nice birds today were two BLACK PHOEBEs, one at a private location and the other at Florence River Park (http://cobirds.org/BySite.aspx?SiteID=804&CountyID=23).

I am not sure if these have been reported or seen yet this fall but the presumed same group of GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE have returned to the Canon City area.  I saw at least seven of them on "Valco ponds."  This is no longer Valco property but these are the ponds just north of the Arkansas river on the east side of MacKenzie Avenue.  This is private property, I actually saw these birds from the bridge over the Arkansas river as they were in the far back part of the pond.  Just a little side note, there has been a group of Greater White-fronted Geese detected in this area every year since at least 1991.

I thought I would add this interesting (at least to me) behavior I observed this evening with a flock of 1500-2000 gulls.  I decided to stop by Big Johnson reservoir, El Paso county, on my home to see if there were many gulls.  As I approached I saw the above flock of gulls flying south away from the reservoir out of sight.  It was approximately 4:50PM so the sun was down but still light in the sky.  I decided to stop and look at the water with what little light was left.  About five minutes later the flock had returned and circled around the lake and then headed south again until they were out of sight.  About five minutes later, they reappeared.  This time they seemed to be flying with a purpose and flew very fast and fairly low headed straight for the reservoir.  They still did not land though, instead they gained in elevation and split into two groups and just circled around and started to head south yet again but did not go far.  It was finally getting too dark to really follow them so I decided to give up watching.  When I left they were still fairly high above the reservoir circling.  Anyway, I wish I would have been there to see what initially got them flying, if anything.

[cobirds] CFO Field Trip to North Metro Lakes

CFO’s Quarterly Field Trip today to North Metro welcomed 24 birders for a 55 species trip.  We started at the Firestone Recreation (Milavec) Lake on Colorado Blvd. to huge flocks of white-faced geese and Redwing Blackbirds before continuing north to the St. Vrain Rivers (yes, still plural) area east of I-25 were we had common sparrows and good duck variety plus a lingering Double-crested Cormorant.  Next was Union Reservoir were the continuing Long-tailed Duck came within a few dozen yards of the shore in front of us.

We ventured down to Panama Reservoir were we had decent looks at the Red-necked Grebe that Ted Floyd found on his trip yesterday.  The Snow Geese that he probably saw yesterday at Little Gaynor were this morning at the corner of Oxford Rd. and US 287.  Then we went north to Ish Reservoir for a few Bonaparte’s Gulls and Killdeer before finding the peace and quiet of Weld County Roads 3 and 5 NE of Berthoud.    Here, Twin Mounds Res. had lots of ducks and three Tundra Swans.

We went back south to Longmont, but McIntosh goodies were too far to expose themselves to us, so we continued on to Lagerman.  There we had three more Bonaparte’s Gulls, a soaring Ferruginous Hawk, a single Sandhill Crane looking for company and finally the Greater White-fronted Goose already reported by Peter Gent.

Join us for our next CFO Quarterly Trip in Winter—check the Winter issue of Colorado Birds for details.

[cobirds] Prothonotary Warbler, etc.

Observed the Prothonotary Warbler eating small berries this morning at 9:40AM, Centennial Park, at the curve in the trail on the north side of the main pond. Nice bird! Next, I went to Chatfield State Park to see what was there. Only things of note were a pair of Common Loons and a single White Pelican. There were also 70+ Western Grebes.

[cobirds] A few Lamar birds on 11/30

I have been down here since last Tuesday and not done a lot of birding but:

White-fronted Goose  - among a flock of the other four expected winter geese (two white, two white-cheeked) in the gravel ponds east of Main Street/US287 at north end of town north of the Cow Palace Motel and the bridge over the Ark River.  Private but sometimes the flock that comes into those ponds a few hours on either side of noon is viewable from the highway.

INDIGO BUNTING - female type in the nw corner of the field north of Riverside Cemetery in Lamar (Maple Street a mile or so east of Main).  Hanging out with juncos and tree sparrows along the little irrigation ditch that holds seep water from the main ditch a little to the north.

Northern Mockingbird - in the juniper row west of Riverside Cemetery and just east of the big manufacturing building.

Not much at LCC except a big flock or two of juncos, a Red-bellied Woodpecker, a towhee (heard only, most likely Spotted), and a Ruby-crowned Kinglet.  Probably cardinals somewhere, maybe the houses to the south, but I did NOT see or hear any.

[cobirds] Red-necked Grebe etc, Boulder Co

All,

I encountered some nice birds in Boulder County on this gorgeous morning.
First, the Red-necked Grebe was still at Panama Reservoir at 8am, seen
from the north shore at the south end of 115th Street. Next, I went west
on Oxford Road and just west of Hwy 287, there were 4 Snow Geese including
one Blue Goose. Then, I went to McIntosh Lake in northwest Longmont.
From the south shore in great light I saw the female Long-tailed Duck and
the male Barrow's Goldeneye. Finally, at Lagerman Reservoir between 63rd
and 75th Streets, there was an adult White-fronted Goose with the Canada
Geese just to the north of the reservoir. All together, a very nice
morning.

Cheers, Peter Gent.

[cobirds] Recap: The Great Boulder Caper

Hello, Birders.

Thirty-plus non-shoppers capered yesterday, Friday, Nov. 29, for the third annual Great Boulder Caper, sponsored by the Boulder Bird Club. We enjoyed beautiful weather, fantastic company, and some good birds. It was especially nice to have a sizable and animated contingent from faraway Colorado Springs, plus a number of folks relatively new to birding in the region.

We started out at Cottonwood Marsh, where our very first bird was the long-present Tundra Swan. Next up was a marvelous Prairie Falcon that flew by low over the marsh, then spent the next hour in plain view on several conveniently prominent high lookouts. Next: a poorly glimpsed Marsh Wren, then a beauty that glowed in the sun-kissed cattails. Out at the far west end of Sawhill: An Evening Grosbeak called constantly as it flew over, and several Hooded Mergansers dazzled in the bright sunshine. Back at Cottonwood Marsh, we heard and saw a fine, ruddy, white-throated, adult Swamp Sparrow, plus the day's only Northern Pintail.

Our second stop was McIntosh Lake, where there were at least 2,000 Ring-billed Gulls. Also, an impressive early influx of Herring Gulls; we counted 45 along one ice bar, and there were surely a few dozen scattered elsewhere. Can we call it an even 75? (75's not an even number, but I digress.) More: 5 or so California Gulls, 1 adult Thayer's Gull, and a first-cycle Lesser Black-backed Gull. The Common Goldeneye flock was substantial, with at least 325 and probably many more. Mixed in with them was a drake Barrow's Goldeneye, a typically handsome individual but annoyingly prone to submersion. With all those gulls and ducks, we of course saw the obligate Bald Eagle.

We capered on to Ish Reservoir, which had low water levels and, despite the late date, insects along the shoreline. (Re: insects. We saw many all day long, and Dave Leatherman's name came up repeatedly; the dude's induced a sort of November insect mania among Colorado birders.) Despite several passes through the shorebird (!) flock, alls we could come up with were a bunch of late Killdeer. We saw a distant scaup spuh that looked good for Greater, but we weren't sure. Also a small flock of Horned Larks right along the shore, and three Northern Harriers.

Next, it was down to Jim Hamm Nature Study Area, where we were awed by an ungodly number of Eurasian Collared-Doves. One tree had 91; two other trees had at least that number, it seemed; and others were flying around. (Plus, there were some across the road in Weld County.) We'll call it a very conservative 250. A male Cooper's Hawk was on the premises, and created general Streptopelian mayhem. And our best bird was a beautiful, tardy Say's Phoebe, first spotted in a small tree, but then on a more "natural" habitat: a rooftop. (What IS it with Say's Phoebes and rooftops?)

Down at Panama Reservoir, many grebes were hanging on, among them a nice-post-Thanksgiving gathering of 34 Eared Grebes, mixed in with which was a hulking Red-necked Grebe. The widely scattered Aechmophorus grebes, as far as we could tell, were all Western Grebes. Land birds included our only White-crowned Sparrows (a flock of 5) and Western Meadowlarks (a flock of 9) of the day, plus 1,000+ Red-winged Blackbirds.

We now headed west to Little Gaynor Lake, where the big goose flock harbored three Snow Geese, one Blue Goose, several obvious Cackling Geese, several equally obvious Greater Canadian Honkers, and lots of tweeners. Conditions were perfectly calm here, and it was fun to listen to duck music: Gadwalls quacking their Scandinavian quacks, Northern Shovelers singing "shook-shook" over and over again, and so forth. (Learn more about duck music here: http://blog.aba.org/2012/04/duck-music.html.)

We wound down the caper at the Valmont Reservoir complex, where we reaffirmed two truths: (1) bird from the east side (we did that), and (2) get there well before the sun disappears behind the Flatirons (we didn't do that). Right away, we found a scoter spuh that we called a Surf, but now I'm not so sure of that. I think it might have been a White-winged. Well, a, female-type bird showing absolutely no white in the wing, but it looked big like a White-wing, and its white facial blobs were probably a better match to White-wing than to Surf. Regardless, a cool bird, and maybe somebody will confirm an ID in the days ahead. Meanwhile, the merganser flock was excellent. We had an exact count of 222 Red-breasted Mergansers--and that was before we noticed another monster pod elsewhere; let's call it an even 300, and 300 truly is an even number. Hundreds of Common Mergansers, too, and double digits of Hooded Mergansers. Speaking of double digits, we saw 10 Horned Grebes. Other stuff: the day's second Tundra Swan, about 10 Canvasbacks, hundreds of American Coots, and shockingly few gulls and geese. On the walk out, we listened to the mellow hooting of a female Great Horned Owl, and we looked through our scopes at the dazzling crescent of the planet Venus.

Thanks to the Boulder Bird Club for sponsoring our great caper, and thanks to all the wonderful participants. We'll caper again in 2014!

[cobirds] Re: Two days left to find the rest of the N.A. warbler species (in CO in November!)

After tomorrow is over, then there is December.  I don't know of any December sightings of Prothonotary, Worm-eating, or Tennessee, among others for the Winter Season (December 1-February 29) for Colorado!  It will be interesting to see what species of warblers and/or vireos (there were Warbling and Red-eyed Vireo in the state in November too) are seen in December, and if any will be found in a Colorado Christmas Bird Count circle, on count day, or count week!

I think if any of these birds make it December, they should be documented for the CBRC, even if they aren't on the CBRC review list.  Documenting birds that aren't expected during the winter, is a good idea.  I did document the two warblers of major interest, that I saw last year in December in Pueblo (Yellow-throated Warbler and Northern Parula).  I also saw Pine and Wilson's in Pueblo, last December, though they aren't as strange as these other two, so I didn't document those for the CBRC.

RE: [cobirds] Re: Two days left to find the rest of the N.A. warbler species (in CO in November!)

Ted et al,
The existence of this Worm-eating Warbler is mentioned twice in the original "Two days left..." post, so the total remains a robust 15, yes?

What I want to know is why the Worm-eating is sitting in the midst of honeylocust pods.  It might be getting adult Honeylocust Seed Weevils (Amblycerus robiniae).  Note the emergence hole of one of these weevils in a pod at right in the photo.  These "pea weevils" are not true weevils but are in the family Bruchidae.  The members of this family are noted for their feeding on various legume seeds (aka "beans" or "peas").  While I don't know the Honeylocust Seed Weevil's life cycle, nor can I find reference to it on-line, I do know adults sometimes come inside houses during winter.  I have observed this both in Fort Collins and Lamar.  This would lead one to assume they emerge outdoors sometime in autumn or early winter, prior to seeking overwintering sites in protected locations.  If adult emergence is on-going in Grand Junction, perhaps the warbler will persist, and be "gettable" by local birders, if they search concentrations of honeylocust pods in the area of the report.  Just a guess.  If anyone sees the warbler getting a seed weevil, or sees seed weevils among the pods, we'd all like to hear about it.  Email me in private if you get a sample of same (or something else) that could be verified.  Thanks.

Even though Black Friday shouldn't count as a real day, except for birders brave/sane enough to use it properly, there is now only 1 day left to add the remaining 41 species of NA warblers not yet seen in CO in November.

[cobirds] Swans and other goodies, Huerfano Co.

I spent a windy day birding the lakes near Walsenburg in Huerfano CO.

At Lake Maria (five miles east of Walsenburg on SR10) there were fifteen swans.  Three of them were close enough to identify as Trumpeter Swans.  The other twelve were too far away.  With the distant swans was a single American White Pelican.  A big surprise was a flock of 88 Sandhill Cranes at the south end of the lake.

At Lake Martin in Lathrop SP, there were two Common Loons and a Red-necked Grebe.  I counted 335 Common Goldeneyes on Lake Martin among which I found a single male Barrow's Goldeneye.

Horseshoe Lake at Lathrop had numerous hunters and frequent gunfire.  I stayed away.

The three lakes above are still ice free.

[cobirds] Prothonotary Warbler still present this afternoon

The Prothonotary Warbler was still present this afternoon at Centennial Park, observed 4:10 - 5:05 pm by Linda Hodges, Bonny Morgan, and Gloria Nikolai. What a beautiful bird!

There was also a Ross' goose among the cackling and Canada geese and a black-crowned night heron in a tree.

[cobirds] Centennial Park, Arapahoe

Along with the Prothonotary Warbler, at noon today, there were 14 Snow Geese at Centennial Park. These left the park around 12:30pm. Many of the Snow and Ross's Geese which visit Centennial Park, visit Fort Logan Cemetery, and vice versa [along with other Canada and Cackling Geese].

Thank you Art for the beautiful warbler !

[cobirds] Larimer County gulls - possible adult Vega Gull

I visited the Larimer County landfill this afternoon expecting to find the mother load of gulls, but was disappointed. There was a decent flock of 500 or so, with a couple of adult Lesser Black-backed and good numbers of Herring and California accompanying the throng of Ring-billed Gulls. I ended the day at Horseshoe Lake in Loveland, which continues to be excellent for gulls. There were 3 Lesser Black-backed (2 adults and a first-cycle) and plenty of Herring, California and Ring-billed, plus a pod of 35 Bonaparte's Gulls. Of note was a dark-mantled adult Herring Gull that fit the description for Vega Gull (Larus argentatus vegae). This bird would be a vagrant in Colorado although single adults that resemble this species have been showing up annually. It breeds mainly in Siberia. The Europeans consider it a full species separate from Herring Gull. There is a page dedicated to it in the Sibley Guide on p. 217. The Horseshoe Lake bird was a dead ringer for the "Adult Nonbreeding" plumage depicted in the Sibley Guide. Hopefully it will stick around and pose for documentation photos.

[cobirds] Costa's Hummingbird (El Paso)

COBirders,

Sorry about this long version but…

On 1 November an unidentified hummingbird, nicknamed Friday because of the day of the week on which it was found, was seen in a gated estate in Colorado Springs. The finders of the hummingbird put up a sugar water feeder and wrote to Aiken Audubon seeking information on methods needed to keep the bird alive but the message was delayed until the 26th.  Eventually photographs of the bird were obtained by the finders, caretakers on the estate, and the photos were circulated to a few birders.  Those who viewed the photographs believed the bird was likely a Costa’s Hummingbird, only 6 accepted records for Colorado.  When the bird was still alive on 26 November, Jeannie Mitchell contacted the caretakers and discussed the natural history of “our” hummingbirds, and in particular information on wintering attempts by hummingbirds in sub-zero temperatures. Jeannie asked for permission to view and photograph the bird.  Three local birders were admitted to the narrow courtyard of the caretakers’ house in Colorado Springs. After 30 minutes the hummer came to the feeder, also perching in a nearby tree.  The hummingbird visited the feeder about every 30 minutes (3x). The bird is a 1st year male Costa’s Hummingbird, in molt, as is evident by the gorget color and shape, white belly and white stripe behind the eye, the short, pumping tail, and by comparing it to Anna’s Hummingbird photographs.  While viewing this bird is currently not a possibility to interested birders, a representative of Aiken Audubon will talk to the caretakers after Thanksgiving to inquire if they (and especially the owner of the property) would consider allowing birders access during designated times of the day.  There are a number of access issues that would need to be resolved before permission could be granted but in the very least another very cool bird at a late date in Colorado.   I will post a couple photographs of the hummingbird on the CFO Facebook pages in a bit.

Happy Thanksgiving to all,

[cobirds] Chestnut sided warbler in Wheat Ridge Greenbelt on 11-26, Jefferson County

Greetings,

At approximately 11am on Tuesday a small group of Tuesday Birders observed a lively chestnut sided warbler where Clear Creek crosses Kipling. This was on the west end of Anderson Park in Jefferson County. We did not see the bird eat anything, but it did seem to be actively looking. The bird spent about 15-20 minutes in several trees on the north side of the creek before crossing the creek to the south and then it flew to the west side of Kipling, on the south side of the creek. We lost track of the bird there and did not see it again.

Sorry for the late post.

[cobirds] Reminder: The Great Boulder Caper, Friday, 11/29

Hello, Birders.

Just a quick reminder about this coming Friday's 3rd annual Great Boulder Caper. Full details here:

We meet at 7am at Cottonwood Marsh, and we caper from there. After each good bird, we celebrate with food and drink: tofurkey, orange slices, and Klingon blood wine (which may not be what you think it is). And we have a liberal and generous definition of "good bird."

Looks like we'll have beautiful weather, by the way.

See you on Friday!

Seen by many early this afternoon in Centennial Park (see previous postings for location).
Most frequently seen today in the buckthorn tree near the large fallen logs next to the oxbow and along the tiny stream to the north.
