Re: [cobirds] Juvenile redtail hawk or Swainson's morph??

It's a Swainson's Hawk. Note the "bib", which a Red-tailed Hawk wouldn't have.

Re: [cobirds] Re: Yellow Grosbeak possible injury (Huerfano Co)

From a forensic perspective I took pictures off the bird at 12:19 PM today (I cross-checked my camera's clock to be sure this time is exactly correct) and there was no evidence of this blood (?)  at that time. I cannot tell what time Carolyn's pictures were actually taken at based on the .jpg info I can see in her posted shots, we only know when she posted them. So something happened early this afternoon.

Re: [cobirds] Re: Yellow Grosbeak possible injury (Huerfano Co)

I was fortunate to see the yellow grosbeak at around 5:30pm today.  He flew in for a few minutes to eat some seed put out on the ground to the left of the deck below the feeder.  He limped when he needed to adjust his position, and often kept his right foot off of the ground.  It does indeed appear to be injured.  I wonder if this would normally prevent him from mating?  Would the ladies view him as unfit?  Not that there are any other yellow grosbeaks this far north!

Re: [cobirds] Re: Yellow Grosbeak viewing Tuesday

This absolutely looks like an injury. There is blood on his chest as well, probably from grooming.

[cobirds] Red-headed woodpeckers, Young Gulch, Larimer CO

On Saturday in Young Gulch, Poudre Canyon, two of us observed two red-headed woodpeckers chasing each other in some kind of courtship display. Occasionally they would land in a tall dead ponderosa. This was about noon, between 2.8 and 3 miles from the parking lot. They were also harassing two Lewis' woodpeckers in the same area. This was viewed on the east side of the trail/creek in a former burned area. That same day there were at least 8-10 Lazuli buntings and even more Western tanagers.

Last year, 2020, at about the same time frame, the red-headed woodpeckers were observed in a tree hole presumably nesting, in exactly the same area.

[cobirds] House finch or not?

Hi,

I have in my yard what looks like a male House Finch.  However, its song is driving me nuts.  It starts out with only a few of the warble-y notes of a regular house finch, but then always (ok, 95/100 times) ends with the same exact 4 notes, at an even pace, and they are just the tiniest bit buzzy.

If you know musical notation, the notes are A-F-G-A.  Every time.  I can replicate it on my piano.

Is this normal?  I couldn't find any recording of any of the finches (Cassin's, Purple, House) that do this same thing.

Do I just have a musically talented House Finch who sings non-stop?  That's the other thing, it's more incessant than the Eurasian Collared dove.  And it is still singing even though all the other House Finches are mostly quiet.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Re: [cobirds] Yellow Grosbeak carpool?

Before anyone makes plans to head down for a day other than today (Monday) - the landowner's permission so far, I believe,  has extended only through the holiday weekend and not past today.

Sounds like many more people were able to see the bird through out the day on Sunday.  The last ebird report was just after 6pm.  It sounds like over 200-250 people have signed the guest book, and as far as I know everyone has seen the bird.  People from many different states arrived to see it today.  Tomorrow's times are from 8:30am to 7:00pm Mountain time, as previously mentioned.  Not sure yet after tomorrow what the access will be, so if you want to see it, come tomorrow (hopefully it will there).  The weather looks wet tonight and tomorrow.  It is a four mile gravel road from I-25 east to the gate, I don't know how muddy the road could get, if it rains a lot.

Good luck,
