[cobirds] Northern Parula Bear Creek Nature Center, El Paso County.

At 10:30 on October 31st I saw a Northern Parula. Yellow breast with a dark band across it. White below the chest.white eye ring, possibly interupted. Grey(light blue) on back and head. Two white wing bands. It was in the large tree off the Northeast corner of the Center
I returned at 2:00 PM, but the pattern of the birds had changed and there were few birds in the vicinity. I did see a Lincoln's Sparrow.

[cobirds] Halloween goodies at Sombrero Marsh, Boulder County

Hey, all.

Sombrero Marsh, Boulder County, just east of downtown Boulder, is one of the most accessible birding hotspots around. It's right off busy Arapahoe Road and easily birded by those with limited mobility, limited time, or both. This Halloween morning, Wed., Oct. 31, I stopped by for a quick visit and was pleased to find 2 Swamp Sparrows, 1 Eastern Bluebird, and 1 Virginia Rail. Here's my eBird checklist, including photos and audio:

https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S49582628

Nearby Baseline Reservoir had 2 Common Loons.

[cobirds] Finally, in Boulder

I've wanted to see a White-throated Sparrow in Boulder County for nearly 25 years. Whenever one is posted on Cobirds or eBird, I race off to try to find it, but I've always dipped, and trudged away from the site with the feeling that White-throated Sparrows are birds that other people see in Boulder.

Until today.

After work, I wandered over to the Boulder Community Gardens a block away from my home, in hopes that I might catch a decent photo of a starling or a robin.

As I was photographing a White-crowned Sparrow in the lovely horizontal light of a late-October evening, I thought to myself, "Wouldn't it be cool if a White-throated Sparrow popped up right here?" And then, as if cued by an off-stage director, a White-throated Sparrow popped up, literally exactly centered in my camera's viewfinder. I didn't even have to re-focus.  I just pressed down on the shutter button, and there it was.

Wow.

Other cool birds at the Boulder Community Gardens:  two adult-plumaged Bald Eagles sparring with each other in mid-air.  I managed a decent photo of them, too. Three Cedar Waxwings, which also posed for my lens.  And a first-of-the-season American Tree Sparrow perched in the fading light.

If you'd like to see the photos, they're here: https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S49588574.

Good birding everybody. This October has been a magical month for Boulder birds.

[cobirds] Winter Wren, Environmental Learning Center

This morning at CSU's Environmental Learning Center in Fort Collins I found a Winter Wren. It was towards the southeast corner. The Wren was about 50 feet south of a sign that is titled "Wanted, Habitat - Dead or Alive". It foraged along the dry bank just to the east of the trail.

[cobirds] Re: Black-legged Kittiwake - Pueblo Res. 10/30

It appears the same winter adult Black-legged Kittiwake that I saw at
Pueblo Reservoir this afternoon, was seen this morning at Memorial
Park in Colorado Springs, and it was photographed up there, mine was
too far out to get any photos. Black-legged Kittiwake is much rarer
of a bird in El Paso County, than Pueblo County.

Re: [cobirds] RE: Teachable moment. Please post your photos for study.

COBirders,
A friend of mine posted this photo of a female Tufted Duck today so I thought I'd share it with the group. It's a bit of a closeup, but interesting to look at...

Good birding,

I saw your revised checklist.
Would help me learn the structural points, etc if you re-attached the
close photos you took of the RN Duck, as were on your earlier list.
Thanks, Joe

[cobirds] Pacific Loon continues at Marston Reservoir

I saw the previously reported Pacific and Common  Loons from a vantage point
along Bow-Mar Drive, where one is allowed to pull completely off the roadway onto the grass.
This is near the pin marker for the eBird hotspot named "Marston Reservoir Complex--Marston Reservoir East End".

I looked due south and the loons were 2/3 of the way across the lake, between a red and a yellow buoy. Seeking a
closer look, I drove to the cul de sac of West Layton Way, which can be reached by going south on South Wadsworth St,
where the far west end of the water comes close to the chain link fence. That way one avoids trespassing.

However from  that cul de sac, houses blocked views of the loon, and one is prohibited from walking east into the nature
preserve.  So I tried from the far west end of the lake, thru the
chain link fence and although I could see the loons, but they were far off and into the sun.

So IF you want to try for the loons, you might need to try all of those 3 vantage points or even Isthmus Park to get a decent view.

[cobirds] Walden Ponds wanderings, Oct. 28

Hey, everybody. I enjoyed a pleasant ramble around Cottonwood Marsh & nearby water bodies, Walden Ponds tract, Boulder County, in the 5pm hour this Sunday evening, Oct. 28. Nothing really out of the ordinary, but a nice array of seasonal stuff: 6 cackling geese, 2 lesser scaups, 1 Virginia rail, 1 long-billed dowitcher, 24 Wilson snipes, 1 greater yellowlegs, 1 American bittern, 1 bald eagle, 500+ westbound American crows, 1 marsh wren, 1 Lincoln sparrow, and 20 westbound great-tailed grackles. Field notes & a few pix at eBird (where else?): https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S49530046.

[cobirds] Waxwings! In west Centennial, Arapahoe County

I too spotted cedar waxwings this morning along the S Platte near the Audubon center as they were getting after the chokecherries and Russian olives along with the robins. Such a handsome bird!!

[cobirds] Calmer times in Boulder/Larimer

John Vanderpoel and I headed out late this morning to visit some northern Boulder and southern Larimer reservoirs.  As opposed to the goings on of the previous seven days, not too much excitement this time around.  The east side of Terry Reservoir off US 287 in Boulder County north of Longmont had a at least 10 Bonaparte’s Gulls, and Dry Creek Reservoir SE of Carter Lake had a Surf Scoter and a lingering Say’s Flycatcher.  Some interesting paradoxes out there, though.  Newell Lake just east of Berthoud had 635 Ring-billed Gulls in a single species (as far as we could tell) flock.  Hummel Reservoir, about 0.5 miles away across fallow fields, and roughly the same size, had none.   Our only Canvasbacks, 68 of them, were also all together in the not very large Twin Mounds Reservoir east of Campion.

[cobirds] Around West Arapahoe

I spent the morning and early afternoon around west Arapahoe. Highlights today (10/28) include:
  • at Blackmer Lake: a rather later Western Tanager. Swamp Sparrow. At least one, possibly two, striking, very dark Red-tails.
  • in Littleton, a flock of 45 or so Sandhill Cranes, catching a thermal around Broadway & Littleton Blvd.
  • my first Merlin of the year, at the Rollin D. Barnard Equestrian Park in Greenwood Village. As the local raptors typically do, the Merlin was perched along the enormous transmission towers. I got to see it (apparently) flush north when a Red-tailed Hawk came through, then u-turn and head south to pursue a flock of waxwings already in flight.

[cobirds] N. Shrikes and Sandhills east of Longmont last week

Jamie Simo and I did our monthly survey of the Peschel open space east of Longmont and we had two firsts: 2 Northern Shrikes and 3 Sandhill Cranes! The Sandhills weren't in the open space per se, but in the cornfield just south of it. 9 tom turkeys, too!

Re: [cobirds] Re: Teachable moment. Please post your photos for study.

Although ducks do hybridize and Aythya hybrids, eg Ring-necked x Tufted Duck hybrids occur,
the "structural features" Glenn Walbek mentioned are evident hear, so a juvy RN Duck molting into
first winter plumage fits well with your great photo.
Those structural features would include:
Flat and upward sloped top of head, with peak at rear of crown
Flat, straight back of head.
Tufted would have rounded head.
Bill of RN Duck is slightly longer than scaup or Tufted Duck, although that is not diagnostic.
What other structural features can we see?
One interesting thing about this photo is that the eye is bright yellow. Glenn's photos of juvy
RN Duck showed dull yellow eye! Is the same individual or is eye color affected by lighting?

Finally in the European guide, "Bird Identification" by Harris, Tucker and Vinicombe, on page 45,
there is a drawing of a juvy/first winter RN Duck with the caption, "Eye dull, WISPY CREST DUE TO MOULT".
Also a hybrid (adult) drawing is on the same page.

What else can we learn that will help us separate juveniles of these very similar species - RNDU and TUDU!
There was certainly a big TOO DOO at Marston yesterday.

Joe Roller, Denver
Comments welcome.

Thanks to Bil Ford, this morning we were able to get better photos of this bird. I have posted photos at this ebird post: https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S49516513 for Marston Reservoir.  Note that the bird did not dive while we watched (so I assume the head is dry). Also it was well away from any other bird - at least 1/4 mile - and over by the isthmus, very near the shore.  I have more photos in case there is some body part you want to see.  Any chance this is a hybrid?
