[cobirds] Baird's Sparrows, Larimer County

CFO Trip Report - Baird's Sparrow

Ten of us attended the trip to Soapstone Prairie Natural Area at dawn this morning. The early start was essential, as we encountered more song activity than last week, with 7 adult males detected singing from the colony spread out along the Pronghorn Loop and Plover trails. However, only one of these actually posed for photos (along the Plover Trail). Viewing the birds proved to be quite difficult. My subgroup went north on the Pronghorn Loop from the trail junction and we failed to see any of 3 adults that we could hear sing. We did all get scope views of a juvenile Baird's Sparrow (not a Savannah Sparrow this time!), with a fresh, thick black malar/throat stripe. Unfortunately, no photos. To my knowledge, no-one documented any nesting evidence or juveniles, although some folks are still reviewing their photographs. Our total count of BAIS that we encountered in the stakeout area was 11 (5 north of the trail junction and 6 more south). Interestingly, we encountered a 12th bird - a singing adult male - on the hike in, about a mile west of the stakeout area. So, if you are counting, there are still 8 singing males that can be heard from the hiking/biking trails at Soapstone.

Thanks to Doug Faulkner and Derek Hill for co-leading, and to the participants for their volunteer efforts to document nesting.

Our Natural Areas permit allows for one more off-trail effort this coming Saturday, Aug 6. If interested, please contact Doug Faulkner (zebrilus AT gmail DOT com) and/or me by email.

[cobirds] Late report of possible Black Rosy-Finch, Trail Ridge Road, RMNP, Larimer Co.

For those of you who don't subscribe to eBird Rare Bird Alerts, the following sighting from July 25 just appeared on today's Colorado eBird Alert of a Black Rosy-Finch on Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park. Worth keeping an eye out even though it is now five days later. Probably a visiting birder just catching up on eBird submissions.

[cobirds] American Three-toed Woodpecker

Hi

On the the Cross Creek trail, Eagle County, 39-25-51 n, 106-25-31w, south of Minturn by approximately four miles, was an American Three-toed Woodpecker, splintering bark on the trunk of a Douglas Fir, teaching it's off-spring the art of feeding. The zone where all this action was taking place was montane, on a slopped hillside, 8500 feet, the major habitat components consisted on Douglas Fir, Aspen, and Lodgepole Pine. IF this was enough, up slope a Pine Grosbeak began calling, and several Western Tanagers glided in to see what was going on.

[cobirds] How do we know Baird's Sparrow has never bred in Colorado?

I was conversing with Hugh Kingery about the upcoming publication of the 2nd Colorado Breeding Bird Atlas (a project sponsored in part by CFO). This is a birding reference book every Colorado birder should have. It is the product of literally thousands of hours of volunteer efforts by dozens (hundreds?) of Colorado birders and will provide the best information of what is the current status of breeding birds of over 260 of our local breeding species. It answers questions such as "How do we know that Baird's Sparrow has never bred in Colorado?" As suggested by the influx of Baird's Sparrows in the last 3 summers, breeding status of many birds may be changing partly as a consequence of climate change, and the two atlas projects to date document these changes here in Colorado better than any other book available. To get the best deal from the printer, we need advanced orders, so if you are planning to buy this book (and I know ALL of you are!), please pre-order now at www.cobreedingbirdatlasii.org.

You can also help ensure that Baird's Sparrow gets an entry in the next Breeding Bird Atlas by helping document breeding this Saturday. There is space for more volunteer observers on the CFO Field Trip Saturday. Reply to me privately for more info.

Sorry you haven't gotten a response. The Colorado Breeding Bird Atlas may help (http://cobreedingbirdatlasii.org/species-maps.php). I've seen them at Hanging Lake in Glenwood Canyon, but I have not spent any time birding in your area. I hope you find a good location for release, good luck!

[cobirds] CFO Field Trip Announcement (Baird's Sparrow), July 30

Our field trip last Saturday observed Baird's Sparrows but no concrete evidence for successful nesting, so we will try again this Saturday, July 30 at Soapstone Prairie Natural Area in northeast Larimer County. CFO members can assist in the effort to document nesting, which would be a first for Colorado. Observers/photographers are needed to capture images of Baird's Sparrows carrying food items to nests or carrying fecal sacs away from nests or feeding young. To this end, a small group will be co-led by Nick Komar, Derek Hill and Doug Faulkner (CFO President) on a guided 8-mile round trip hike of easy to moderate difficulty, from 5:30 am to 12 noon this Saturday, July 30.  The trip is limited to 19 participants (due to Natural Area permit).

CFO and Fort Collins Natural Area Program are concerned about the well being of grassland nesting birds. Trip participants will be counseled on responsible off-trail conduct, and will be split into smaller groups for off-trail searches, which will be limited to a two-hour period on Saturday.

Registration is first-come, first-serve. To register (free of charge) and arrange for carpooling (from Longmont at 4:00 am, or from Wellington at 4:45 am), reply to this email privately to Nick. If you have already contacted me, no need to do so again (unless you do not hear from me with further details within 24 hrs).

[cobirds] Ira's - 4 Hummers

We had our 4 Colorado Hummers at Tammy and Ira's house yesterday afternoon. They have a perfect front yard for hummingbirds. Tons of beautiful flowers, a nice water feature and hummingbird feeders. Tammy has done a fantastic job.

We had males for the Calliope, Broad-tailed and Rufous. Only saw the juvenile of the Black-chinned and got photos of it.

Here's our Lefthand Canyon brown booby column from today's Daily Camera. We are particularly grateful to Peter Bandurian, for providing the description and photos, and to Paula Hansley, for sharing fascinating information about the wandering ways of these wondrous seabirds. Note that the photos come out much more clearly in the electronic versions of these articles. I expect the CFO bird records committee will render their final judgment within a few months. Steve

[cobirds] Early morning Jeff/Arapahoe Co birds

This morning I went out for a very early bike ride. At sunrise (which was awesome) on the S Platte greenway at Mineral, a rufous hummer was checking out flowers right off the path. Got a very close look as I rolled by.

Nearish the horse stable at Chatfield, Jeff Co, I heard a grasshopper sparrow singing. I thought I heard a dickcissel about where I found one a few weeks ago, but I didn't stop. My first Jeff Co grasshopper sparrow, I think.

As an aside, I've had a female/Imm calliope at my house in Littleton for the last several days. Sunday evening it was joined by an adult male and they alternated feeding until it was almost dark.

Cheers,
Scott Somershoe
