Re: [cobirds] Petition to AOS Leadership on the Decision to Change all Eponymous Bird Names

I signed the petition to not change English language bird  names, because it does not help women or minorites at all, to change these
names nor does it change the history of these individuals, to try to  forget about them.  Remembering and learning from mistakes  is "better".

What helps women and minorities get interested in and stick with birding, is mentoring.  I feel grateful to a lot
of mentors in this community in DFO, CFO, Boulder Bird Club and Broomfield Bird club, Thank you.    And,  thanks, Rachel Hopper, for
bringing this to our attention.   Every field guide we own can be thrown away if this occurs,
or you can cross out 100 plus names. Is this just about publishers trying to make money or what?  !

All that money would need to be spent updating guides and brochures anyway if only some bird names are changed, as you recommend in the petition. And a few million dollars for the federal government to spend over a period of several years is tiny, not "enormous," as you claim. It's a few pennies from each of us each year, which I, for one, am more than willing to spend to get better names for our birds. There's a reason that concern hasn't been discussed previously on COBirds.

For full disclosure, so you know where I'm coming from, I do not care about whether bird names are changed at all. I don't think any of it will matter either way within a few years. The time and energy you spend complaining and trying to fight a decision that's already been made could be better spent trying to come up with great new names for birds and influence those decisions.

One concern not included in the petition and not previously discussed on COBirds, but worth mentioning here, are the financial repercussions which are enormous. I have seen some estimates in the millions starting at the Federal level and ending with you. Every bird checklist, brochure, field guide, interpretive sign, database (including ebird) & website (to name a few) would have to be updated or redone. This is a lot of time & money. The argument can be made that this huge financial commitment would be better spent on conserving birds & their habitats.

[cobirds] Barr Lake update

Hi all,

Passing this along from Bird Conservancy of the Rockies.

Nathan Pieplow
Boulder

Update on Barr Lake from Bird Conservancy of the Rockies:

Bird Conservancy of the Rockies met with FRICO (Farmers Reservoir and Irrigation Company) and CPW staff to discuss mitigating damage to critical bird habitat at Barr Lake. FRICO's work along the shore, berm and ditch are expected to take place over the next couple of years and extend along a large segment of the eastern shoreline. They are removing trees that are close to the berm, vegetation in the ditch and changing the slope of the berm and adding riprap for bank stabilization.

Bird Conservancy has banded and released over 45,000 birds of 123 species over the past 35 years at Barr Lake, an invaluable stopover for migratory and resident birds. FRICO has agreed to work with Colorado Parks and Wildlife and us to minimize the impact on the habitat and the upcoming spring migration season and assist with revegetation over the next several years as well as helping mitigate the loss of large trees with nesting platforms. This will include looking at planting shrubs and other native, water loving plants along the shoreline to help with nesting and migratory bird habitat.

We want to thank the bird and conservation community and our partners with Colorado Field Ornithologists (CFO), Denver Field Ornithologists (DFO), Audubon, Wild Birds Unlimited-Fort Collins, Longmont and Denver area stores, individuals and other organizations who are raising their voices and providing awareness for this critical place for birds.

[cobirds] House Finches + Rocky Mtn Bee Plant - Arapahoe

I've grown Rocky Mountain Bee Plant (Cleome serrulata) for several years in the backyard of my Centennial home. The species spreads more than I'd like and the foliage has earned in the name skunkweed. But I appreciate it for attracting all kinds of pollinators, hummingbirds included and, one summer, a tarantula hawk.

I've never noticed songbirds feeding on its seeds. I figured it was because the seeds tend to fall -- they're in pods, which split open as they dry, and between my dogs and me, we're constantly brushing up against the plants and rattling seeds loose. (I've also probably not watched carefully enough.) But this year, they're being visited by House Finches, who appear to be feeding at the seed heads. Junco forage below them -- but there's all kinds of stuff on the ground, so who knows what they're eating.

The House Finches also seem happy to remain perched in the most robust of the bee plants, some of which cleared 6 feet this year with all the moisture, and enjoy the sun.

[cobirds] Long-tailed Duck -- Ridgway Reservoir

Hello all,

A single Long-tailed Duck was present today at Ridgway Reservoir.  I think this individual represents only the second record for the species in Ouray County (4 Long-tailed Ducks were present on the reservoir  Nov. 17, 2021).  It was among an estimated 800 ducks of 16 species on the entire reservoir, which was an eight-fold increase in the number of ducks from yesterday.  A flock of 92 Snow Goose flew over, but showed no interest in stopping.  Here is my checklist with photos of the Long-tailed Duck: eBird Checklist - 26 Nov 2023 - Ridgway SP--Bay View Day Use Area - 15 species (+2 other taxa)

Count Leader/Compiler:  Joey Kellner, SWDenve...@gmail.com

Feeder Coordinator: Joey Kellner – Feeder watchers, please send your list of species and numbers of each species to the email above as soon as possible after "Count Day".

All are encouraged to participate in the annual Denver Christmas Bird Count (CBC) sponsored the National Audubon Society.

Fees: None!  So, no excuses!  Come have a great time and help count birds!  Beginners and experts all welcome!

After a day in the field, all participants are invited to attend the compilation meeting to warm up, chat with other birders, and find out how the count fared. It is a lot of fun.  The compilation meeting will be at approximately 5:00pm in the multipurpose room at the Chatfield State Park headquarters (south side of the lake near the Heronry Overlook); State Parks vehicle entry pass required.  Please carpool if possible.

The 15-mile diameter "count circle" is subdivided into 24 "count areas" each with an Area Leader.  To participate, please contact the Area Leader (see below).  If you would like to help in an area that still needs additional observers call the Count Compiler.

To prevent phone numbers and/or email addresses from being posted to COBIRDS, please contact the Compiler (contact info above) for contact information for all Area Leaders.

[cobirds] Denver Christmas Bird Count information

Hello COBIRDers!

The Denver CBC can ALWAYS use more eyes and ears (regardless of birder skill level).  See information below.

Even if you cannot help out on the Denver CBC, PLEASE consider helping out on a Christmas Bird Count (CBC) near you (or one further afield to perhaps a new birding location for you).

Joey.

69th DENVER CHRISTMAS BIRD COUNT - SATURDAY, DECEMBER 16, 2023

Count Leader/Compiler:  Joey Kellner, SWDenverBirding@gmail.com

Feeder Coordinator: Joey Kellner – Feeder watchers, please send your list of species and numbers of each species to the email above as soon as possible after “Count Day”.

The 15-mile diameter “count circle” is subdivided into 24 “count areas” each with an Area Leader.

[cobirds] SE CO bird updates (Bent)

The Harris's Hawk first found by Norma Verhoeff was still present along US50 about 11 miles w of Lamar. The exact location was US50 jct Bent CR33. It was atop a wooden telephone pole on the south side. All sightings I am aware of have been between CR33 on the east and CR 32 a mile to the west, with the bird either sitting atop short or tall poles, or cavorting in flight with harriers. US50 milepost 423 is in the heart of the Harris's Hawk activity area.

The Black-legged Kittiwake first reported by Glenn Walbek a few days ago was still present at Long Lake on Kiowa CR 19 between Blue Lake and Haswell. Also at Long Lake were two White-fronted Geese, two Black-bellied Plovers, two Bonaparte's Gulls, at least one Greater Scaup, lots of white and white-cheeked geese, Sandhill Cranes, flyover longspurs, total of 34 species. Locals say this playa rarely has water but when it does, it somehow has fish, and then lots of birds.
