[cobirds] El Paso county --- WESTERN GULL, 11/30/14

COBirders,

I made a quick stop at Big Johnson reservoir this afternoon and found very little.  The cold front arrived about 20 minutes after I got there so I was basically leaving when John Drummond showed up.  I stayed to chat with John and while we were talking we noticed a very pale gull come flying in and land way out on the water.  As we were studying the bird, which turned out to be a 1st cycle THAYER'S GULL, we noticed another gull come into view.

At first, I was a bit stumped by the bird as it was an adult dark-mantled bird but not dark enough to be a "typical" Lesser Black-backed yet was darker than a nearby adult California Gull.  It was obviously larger than the Cal and Ring-billed gulls.  It appeared just a bit "longer" and a bit heftier than the Thayer's Gull.  It had an all white head, no streaking that John or I detected.  Other things noted while it was sitting on the water was a pale eye and large yellow bill with red gonydeal, neither of us could determine the orbital color, just a bit too far.  Then the bird took flight and we immediately saw the obvious bubble gum pink legs.  In flight we also were able to see the wide trailing edge of the wings and just tiny white mirrors on all but P10 (outermost primary feather).  P10 had a more obvious mirror.

So we felt like this was good for WESTERN GULL and we thought with the lighter mantle it was of the northern nominate occidentalis subspecies.

Unfortunately, as fast as that bird arrived (apparently with the front) it also departed.  We watched it gain a bit of altitude to the north and disappear.  We stayed until almost dark and it never returned.  Hopefully it will be found again!

Oh, the LONG-TAILED DUCK also put in an appearance.

[cobirds] Loveland area birding (Larimer)

Today, I joined a few other local birders to explore locations within the Loveland CBC circle. We observed about 50 species. Highlights were:
Horseshoe Lake - Lesser Black-backed Gull (2), Thayer's Gull (1 adult), Great-tailed Grackle (36 at the dairy on the north side)
Carter Lake -Common Loon (1), Horned Grebe (1), Eared Grebe (20)
Dry Creek Reservoir - Ruddy Duck (43), Western Grebe (2)
Hertha Reservoir - Greater Scaup (1)
Lonetree and Lon Hagler Reservoirs - almost birdless
along the route - Merlin (1), Pine Siskins (5)
Observation conditions were suboptimal with sub-freezing temperature and low, heavy cloud cover.

The Loveland Christmas Bird Count date is set for January 1, 2015. If interested in joining (includes a free pizza dinner), let me know.

[cobirds] Pine Warbler--Denver West/Jeffco

Today, Daren O'Brien and I had a male PINE WARBLER at the Denver West Business Park.  The bird was with a large flock that included Mountain Chickadees, Red-breasted Nuthatches, Black-capped Chickadees, and a few juncos.  The flock was very active, moving around building 6 looking for food in the rapidly dropping temperatures.  What is up with Pine Warbler and Denver West??  Photos taken of this bird with frozen fingers can be seen below:

[cobirds] Nov.14 to 30 At home

Hi Cobirders, Been very busy lately. Keeping feeders filled is a challenge especially during the cold spell. Not doing the large cable drum feeder yet.

Most every day: 7:30 to 6:30AM Bushtits come small flocks before regulars show up. Regulars are: 7 to 9AM and most of the day.:

House Finch 15 House Sparrow 25 + Red winged Blackbirds 4 imm., 4 males and 1 Female, Black Capped Chickadee,
Spotted Towhee was spotted a bright male 5 times in past 10 days in the feeder at near the window . Unusual visitor .
Wednesday the same feeder had a Black and White Warbler . I saw it only for a few second .It did not eat any seeds may have found some very small
insects. Flew off and did not return.

High wind gusts emptied the tubular seed feeder but the Eurasian Collared Doves (8) ate the seeds on the ground under it.

Today a Black-billed Magpie flew along the back fence but did not enter the yard.

The Pyracantha berries attack birds including a Robin Friday. Blue Jays come for Peanuts (unsalted in shells) every day.

My helper comes on Monday and likes to see and feed the birds too. I do not spend a lot of time checking on them.

Bye now.

[cobirds] Louisville and Boulder seed eaters

Cobirds:
With the extreme cold this morning many small birds have gone into feeding frenzy modes.

Dan Zmolek and I birded a suburban zone adjoining sections of Open Space near Bear Canyon Drive when a spur trail leads to the Bear Creek Trail.   Also in neighborhoods to the south, weaving in and out of dead end streets.  This area is one of my favorite areas in winter months due to the mixed habitat, feeding stations, and exotic plantings of pinion pine, ponderosa, spruce, scotch pine, and mixed berry bushes.   In that general area we saw:

Bushtits - 12
Red crossbills - several flocks on spruce trees with thick cone crops.
Townsend's solitaire - 4
Stella's jay - dozens, gathering peanuts from backyard feeders
Scrub jay - 6
Black billed magpie - 3
Crow - 2
Raven - 1
Mt. chickadee - dozens
Black capped chickadee - several
Red breasted nuthatch - 4
White breasted nuthatch - 6
A. robin - 2
N. flicker - 12
Downy woodpecker - 1
5 morphs of juncos - dozens
Spotted towhee - 3
House finch - dozens
Rock dove - 30

In Boulder Mt Park - on Ranger Trail near off Flagstaff Mt. Road about 3 days ago:
30 Evening Grosbeaks

In Louisville:
My backyard feeder had 10 bushtits - eating sunflower chips.  I've never seen this behavior before.  They must be really hungry.
Plus a great horned owl yesterday.

Coopers hawks and sharp shined hawks are appearing throughout Louisville neighborhoods also.

[cobirds] Yard birds, SE Aurora, Arapahoe Co

The weather here is predicted to get much colder later today. Apparently the birds know. In one hour this morning, 830-9:30, we saw ten different bird species in our small yard which has feeders and water: blue jays, a robin, starlings, a northern flicker, house sparrows, house finches, a mourning dove, Eurasian collared doves, a downy woodpecker and juncos. When I did the Thanksgiving Bird Count on a warm, calm day, I only recorded three species: blue jays, house finches and red-breasted nuthatches.

[cobirds] American Dipper in Pagosa Springs

Both yesterday and Friday, an American Dipper was present under the Hot Springs bridge in Pagoda Springs (Archuleta County.) It appears regularly in the shade under the south side of the bridge.

--Steve Bouricius (bouricii At earthlink.net) kindly has made arrangements to see the COSTA'S HUMMINGBIRD.  Here are his instructions.
The Costa's Hummingbird in Grand Junction was still present on November 16.  The hosts, Larry and Twanna Cooksey, graciously welcome birders to view the bird from their courtyard at 2217 Tuscany.  Walbek reported seeing the COSTA'S HUMMINGBIRD on November 22.  On November 25, Steve Bouricius reported that the COSTA'S HUMMINGBIRD continues to visit the Cooksey's feeders.

Directions:  From Redlands Parkway, continue west on S. Broadway about 0.6 mi. and turn left on South Camp Road (the street sign is missing); take S. Camp to Renaissance Blvd., turn left on Renaissance, then right on Tuscany to 2217.  Please enter the gate from the Montero Street side, left of the garage door.

Morning is the best time to see the bird as it may not be present for long periods during mid day.  I suggest leaving the bird to feed undisturbed in late afternoon.  There is seating on the patio but you might want to be prepared with a folding chair.  The courtyard is intimate and the feeders close so a quiet atmosphere may be important to seeing the bird.  She often perches deep in the aspen at the west end of the court yard.

PARK COUNTY:
--On November 29 at Eleven Mile Reservoir, Suddjian reported 18 Tundra Swans, 2 Long-tailed Ducks, pair of White-winged Scoters flying by, and 4 Barrow's Goldeneyes.

--At Windsor Reservoir on November 28, Mlodinow reported 7 Lesser Black-backed Gulls and 5 Thayer;s Gulls.

The DFO Field Trip for Saturday, November 29 will be to Pueblo Reservoir led by Ira and Tammy Sanders (zroadrunner14 AT gmail.com 303-278-7172).  Meet in parking lot of Safeway in Line Tree at Yosemite and Lincoln Ave.  Bring Plenty of water and lunch for an all-day trip.  State Parks pass required.

RMBO's Annual Barrow's Goldeneye Count will be on Sunday, November 30 led by Chuck Hundertmark (chundertmark8 AT gmail.com 303-64-0531).  Meet in the parking lot of Jim Hamm Nature Area, Longmont at 0800. From the Denver area, take I-25 north to exit 240.  Drive west on Hwy 119 to County Line Road.  Head north on County Line Road and look for nature area on the left just past 17th Ave.  Will check Union Reseervoir and McIntosh Lake for Barrow's Goldeneyes and other early winter waterfowl.  Will check other areas as time allows.  This will be primarily a driving trip.  Spotting scopes will be useful.  Please register on the website, or call or email the leader in advance.

Good Birding,

[cobirds] Chatfield State Park, Douglas County

I went to look for the Red-necked Grebe at Chatfield, which I did not find, but I saw lot's of other Grebes. From the Douglas County side, I had around 32 Eared Grebes in a group, then there was a separate group of 12 Pied-billed Grebe, and lastly another separate group of 30 Western Grebes. I counted 4, Common Loons on the Douglas County side also. While I was looking from the old Heron Rookery location, an adult Bald Eagle, sat in a Ponderosa Pine 15 feet from where I was standing. This female Bald seemed to care less about my presence.
Near the marina, there were 4, Common Goldeneye, and many American Coot, and a couple of Tree Sparrows. I visited the Park at 2pm.

Happy BIrding!

This morning at 7:30am, I was able to see four Lesser Black-backed Gulls, plus the adult Great Black-backed Gull at the South Shore Marina tires at Pueblo Reservoir.  By the time, the DFO Group arrived at 8:30am, there was only one Lesser Black-backed, plus the Great Black-backed.  There was one Common Loon in the SE Corner of Pueblo Reservoir this morning as well.

[cobirds] Pine Grosbeaks, Jefferson Co, Nov 28

On Nov 28 I encountered a male and female Pine Grosbeak along Stoney Pass Road near the headwaters of Cabin Creek, JeffCo. I found them while I was wandering through the forest around 8,500 ft elevation to the north of the road.

[cobirds] A warm day in the Park - Nov 29

A late November day with temperatures reaching in the low 60s in Park County must be fairly rare. I'm glad I was there to enjoy it.

Eleven Mile Reservoir was essentially ice free except for the upper end near the South Platte inlet. There were 18 Tundra Swans loafing at the edge of the ice there. Waterfowl variety was much reduced from earlier in the month, with most of the birds in two main flocks. These included nearly 2000 Common Goldeneyes as the most numerous duck. Uncommon to rare species for Park Co were 2 Long-tailed Ducks, a male and female White-winged Scoter only seen flying by, 4 Barrow's Goldeneyes, 12 Greater Scaup, and two Hooded Mergansers. Also noted at Eleven Mile were an adult Lesser Black-backed Gull, 4 Am. Tree Sparrows and 2 Bald Eagles.

Spinney Mountain Reservoir was also open water, but the gate has been closed so I could not approach to check waterbirds there. But a group of 9 Bald Eagles was on the shore ice closest to the gate closure.

Didn't check Antero Reservoir since Joey Kellner reported it as frozen earlier in the month, and Lake George is frozen.

Spent some time along various roads at the southeast corner of Park County, checking mostly Ponderosa forest and some Douglas-fir, spruce/fir and varied combos of those. Red Crossbills were at 75% of my stops, with Type 2 birds being most widespread and numerous, but also Type 4 and Type 5 birds noted. Evening Grosbeaks were at a handful of stops in Ponderosa forest. Pinyon Jays were at the north end of county road 61, and at a number of spots along CR 71. A Northern Shrike was along CR 71, and a Mountain Bluebird along CR 71 close to CR 102 was the first I'd seen in Park Co in several weeks. A Ferruginous Hawk was along CR 102 near Witcher Mountain Road. A Pine Grosbeak was at CR 59 south of Eleven Mile Reservoir. American Tree Sparrows were at CR 71 and CR 59 at the crossing of the South Platte. A Rough-legged Hawk was near Jefferson, and Kenosha Pass East Campground had Gray Jays and an Am. Three-toed Woodpecker.

[cobirds] Re: Colorado CBC Dates

Currently the Christmas Bird Count Website, doesn't have the dates public yet.  I'm guessing they might on Monday.  As soon as they do, everyone will be able to see the dates and sign up for the Christmas Bird Count(s) you want to participate in.

Where is the website where we can search for count circles to participate in?  When I Google it I end up at an Audubon page that seems to be not updated with current information - there's a link for find a Count near you but then it takes me to page about the count before over for the year (last year) instead of a page to find a count. http://birds.audubon.org/get-involved-christmas-bird-count-find-count-near-you  I do know about the Colorado Springs count but was hoping to see if there were some others with contact information, etc., that I could maybe get involved in depending on time and dates.....

[cobirds] Great Boulder Caper, Nov. 28, recap

Hello, Birders.

More than 50 us capered yesterday, Black Friday, Nov. 28, in Boulder County. We had visitors from such faraway points of origin as Wyoming (n=2), Iowa (n=1), Vermont (n=1), New York (n=5!), and El Paso County (n=3). Thanks to the Boulder Bird Club (http://boulderbirdclub.org) for sponsoring this splendid outing.

We started out at Walden Ponds, an essay in "Black, Brown, and Beige." Even the Northern Pintails and Hooded Mergansers we found were all females, bewitching in their, well, black, brown, and beige. We also saw a Ferruginous Hawk, a hatch-year Northern Shrike, a roosting Great Horned Owl, a nerve-[w]rackingly close first-year Bald Eagle, a strikingly dark Red-tailed Hawk (but it wasn't a Harlan's), a great throng of brown-and-beige American Tree Sparrows, a female Northern Harrier, an Interior West ("Rocky Mountain" or "Nelson's") White-breasted Nuthatch, and the most unforthcoming Spotted Towhee in the history of birding.

Next it was over to the Boulder Country Club [private], where we saw a single bird with more pizazz than all the Walden birds put together: a preposterous drake Mandarin Duck. Several times we saw this un-banded bird in sustained flight. We also heard Red-breasted Nuthatches, Pine Siskins, and Interior West White-breasted Nuthatches here.

Then it was McIntosh Reservoir, where we we were pleased to find several dainty Bonaparte's Gulls. Numbers of gulls and goldeneyes were good, but the birds were distant and obscured by heat shimmer. Bummer. We wound down at Jim Hamm Nature Study Area and Teller Farms, where we saw nothing out of the ordinary, but enjoyed fine company, lovely weather, and beautiful scenery.

[cobirds] Gr. White Fronted Goose, Sloan Lake, DEN

Another day, another goose...

This time an immature gr. white-fronted in the NW corner of the lake with some Canada's. Orange legs, not too much speckling on the belly, and basically matching Sibley's "juvenille" illustration... so... not a hybrid!

I almost ran the thing over on my way to the store... it was flushed by some people before heading out into the lake to loaf on the ice. I went back for my binoculars and got a good look at it.

PROWERS COUNTY:
--The Red-necked Grebe was reported by Riffe at North Gateway Park in Lamar on November 25.

WELD COUNTY:
--On November 23 at Union Reservoir, Fink reported 1 ad Lesser Black-backed Gull and Thayer's Gull.  On November 24 at Union Reservoir, Mlodinow reported 3rd-cyc Glaucous Gull, 4 Thayer's Gulls (3 ad, 1 juv), and a Pacific Loon.
--A Barrow's Goldeneye was reported by Lefko at 35th Ave Gravel Pond (West Ponds) in Greeley on November 23.
--At Drake Lake at CR 23 just S of Hwy 14 on November 25, Leatherman reported 2 Lesser Black-backed Gulls (1 ad, 1 imm).
