[cobirds] Harris' Hawk

Do we assume that the Harris' Hawk has gone back south for the spring? Or is the hawk still around?

[cobirds] Mlodinow, St Kitts (Caribbean), in March 2018

Greetings

I had the pleasure of visiting St Kitts in the Caribbean, and though it has no endemic bird species, the trip was quite fun. Bird and Bug and other photos are at https://www.flickr.com/photos/36088296@N08/albums/72157693289793631 if you are interested

Best Wishes

Visitors:
A birdwatcher, Crystal, stopped by for a period during the colder part of the day and she explained how she watches our reports and has wanted to make it up to check out the counting station. It was a relatively mild Saturday with view hikers and bikers on the trail and very view coming up to the platform. Question, has anyone else been told to get down from the hill because we're in the firing range's no-man-zone? I had two different groups tell me that today making for three times overall the season! I politely explained that birders take serious risks.

Weather:
The early morning started calm and cold with uninterrupted sunshine which helped warm the hilltop. Eventually a shelf cloud covered the sun through most of the 10am hour which made the temperature drop and the SE breeze pick up. Into the 11am hour the temperature fluctuations where very quick and drastic with quickly moving bands of clouds covering and uncovering the sun. Around midday the clouds disappeared overhead which was a nice reprieve from the cold.

Raptor Observations:
Early in the morning the local Red Tails were seen playing up and down the eastern hillside landing on both telephone poles and tree tops. At one point two Red Tails were harassing some Magpies either looking for a nest or just enjoying the Magpies discomfort. A group of four Turkey Vultures were seen headed south along the western ridge and then they vanished behind Mt. Morrison. There was a good variety of migrators observed this morning. The Accipiters were moving very quickly and I was lucky to catch any of them. There did not seem to be a preferred flight path today but rather a range in elevations and locations.

Non-raptor Observations:
There was eight elk (mothers and children) very close to the platform on the eastern side which were fun to watch meander through the bushes and take naps under the pines. Three Canada Geese plus multiple Magpies, Townsends Solitaires, Scrub Jays, Blackcapped Chickadees, Northern Flickers, and American Crows were seen throughout the day. The amount of flying insects has definitely increased it seems with a variety visiting the hilltop.

Predictions:
None really, no real pattern today other than the clouds covering and uncovering at a consistent rate. Bring a down jacket and sunscreen.

Dinosaur Ridge - Bird Conservancy of the Rockies information may be found at: http://www.birdconservancy.org/
More information at hawkcount.org: [Site Profile] [Day Summary] [Month Summary]

Site Description
Dinosaur Ridge is the only regularly staffed hawkwatch in Colorado and is the
best place in the world to see migrating Ferruginous Hawks. Dinosaur Ridge may
be the best place in the country to see the rare dark morph of the Broad-winged
Hawk (a few are seen each spring). Hawkwatchers who linger long enough may see
resident Golden Eagles, Red-tailed Hawks and Prairie Falcons, in addition to
migrating Swainson's, Cooper's and Sharp-shinned Hawks, American Kestrels and
Turkey Vultures. Peregrine Falcons and Ferruginous Hawks are uncommon; Northern
Goshawk is rare but regular. Non-raptor species include Rock Wren, and sometimes
Bushtit, Western Bluebird, Sandhill Crane, White-throated Swift, American White
Pelican or Dusky Grouse. Birders are always welcome.
The hawkwatch is generally staffed by volunteers from Bird Conservancy of the
Rockies from about 9 AM to around 3 PM from March 1st to May 7th.

Directions to site:
From exit 259 on I-70 towards Morrison, drive south under freeway and take left
into first parking lot, the Stegosaurus lot. Follow small signs from the south
side of lot to hawkwatch site. The hike starts heading east on an old two-track
and quickly turns south onto a trail on the west side of the ridge. When the
trail nears the top of the ridge, turn left, head through the gate, and walk to
the clearly-visible, flat area at the crest of the ridge.

[cobirds] Red-necked Grebe - Pueblo Reservoir SWA NW side 3/31

Hi all,

Earlier this morning, I found a breeding plumage Red-necked Grebe in the State Wildlife Area (SWA), in the North west side of Pueblo Reservoir, Pueblo County.  A few other birders were also able to see it this morning.  After 11am, there was a Violet-green Swallow in the SWA as well (this makes 5 species of swallows there this year, now waiting for Northern Rough-winged).

[cobirds] Pueblo Reservoir birds 3/20

Hi all,

No sign of the Yellow-billed Loon at all today at Pueblo Reservoir.  The breeding plumage Common Loon continues by the dam.  Four non-breeding plumage Common Loons were in the State Wildlife Area on the NW side of Pueblo Reservoir as well.  This area was pretty good today, a Lesser Yellowlegs was with four Greater Yellowlegs, both Blue-winged and Cinnamon Teal, and many swallows, Tree (60), Cliff (1), Barn (2), and Bank (1).  A few Bonaparte's Gulls were around the Reservoir again today as well.

Happy Spring Birding,

Observers: Dave Petroy, Erika Petroy, Mike Fernandez, Shelly Petroy

Visitors:
The usual Good Friday Pilgrimage was happening, but for the first time in the four years I've done Hawk Watch, they didn't come up. Instead they walked along Morrison Hwy, then across I-70, up to Mother Cabrini on frontage road. Mike Fernandez and his two son's Vinnie and Martin were up for the third hour, along with the Petroy family. The daughter Erika is on spring break from UC/Santa Barbara where she's getting a Masters in Evironmental Studies. The Petroy's found out about Hawk Watch from a movie at the Boulder Film Festival about Migrations, which mentioned Dinosaur Ridge site.

Weather:
Beautiful day up on the Ridge. Overcast skies, but warm temps, and thankfully hardly any wind. Humidity started out at 67% after the rain/snow drop yesterday and settled down to 37% by the end of the day.

Raptor Observations:
Locals observed were 4 Redtail Hawks, two over Green Mountain, and the other pair west flying between Mt. Morrison and Mother Cabrini. Many migrators were escorted by one or more of these Red Tails. One Kestrel flew by on the west side of the Ridge, and then tacked west over Mathews/Winters. One Prairie Falcon was spotted on the West side of the Ridge.

Non-raptor Observations:
5 elk were seen on the east side of the Ridge on the way up in the morning. Also seen or heard: 5 Black-billed Magpie; 7 House Finch; 2 Western Meadowlark; 4 American Crow; 2 Townsend's Solitaire; 3 Common Raven; 2 Chickadee; 1 Flicker.

Predictions:
It was such a great day for migration--hoping tomorrow will be also1

[cobirds] Next "Nunn Guy" Field Trip: Prairie Wonders of the Pawnee National Grassland

Hi all

http://coloradobirder.club/m/events/view/Prairie-Wonders-of-the-Pawnee-National-Grassland

The Pawnee National Grassland is a birder's and wildflower enthusiast's paradise. The more than 190,000 acres hosts an amazing array of birds, wildflowers, plants and animals that fills the prairie with song and sights to behold.

April can be an excellent month for seeing migrant and breeding birds in full song. Many specialty birds here include: Mountain Plover, McCown's Longspur, Chestnut-collared Longspur, Burrowing Owl, Long-billed Curlew, various sparrows, Loggerhead Shrike, and many others.

The trip leader is led by the "Nunn Guy" (Gary Lefko). The trip is April 14 (Saturday) beginning at 7:30 AM at the Nunn Café parking lot. Car pool birding is available, but stops are common to get out, look and listen for singing birds. Our trips are always free and participation is not limited. For questions, email the "Nunn Guy" (Gary) at coloradobirder --> AT --> yahoo.com.

Directions:  Meet at the, now closed, Nunn Cafe on south side of Nunn along Hwy 85 (across from east grain elevators). Main routes to Nunn are: I-25N to Wellington to Larimer CR 64E (aka Nunn Road aka Weld CR 100) Hwy 85N from Greeley to Nunn I-25N to Hwy 14E to Ault to Hwy 85N to Nunn.

Thanks Gary Lefko, Nunn

http://coloradobirder.club/

Our human footprint comes with a great accountability and responsibility to balance our demands for resources while affording us great opportunity to sustain grassland ecosystems and protect grassland bird species. The challenge for this century is to better understand our grassland ecosystem and dependent biodiversity in reconciling the human needs placed upon them.

[cobirds] Yellow billed Loon NOT seen yet today

The Pueblo Reservoir Yellow-billed Loon isn't being found so far today.  The Common Loon is still present.  Birders may want to check northern Colorado lakes today, in case the loon is somewhere up there.  I'll report if I can find it again here.

[cobirds] Yellow-billed Loon day 3 at Pueblo Res. 3/29

Hi all,

A few more birders were able to see the Yellow-billed Loon throughout the day, hanging around with a Common Loon, in the Northeast part of Pueblo Reservoir, Pueblo County.

Bill Maynard got an amazing photo of it today.

https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=2151767561506426&set=p.2151767561506426&type=3&theater&ifg=1

Other birds around Pueblo Reservoir area today:

Bill and I also saw an Eastern Phoebe, Cliff Swallow, Barn Swallow (me only), lots of Tree Swallows.  A Northern Shrike was around again today as well.

Good birding,

Total observation time: 5.5 hours

Observers: Joel Chapa

Visitors:
None.

Weather:
Briefly clear then partly cloudy the remainder of the day. Much of the landscape was snow covered. Around noon a light SE breeze shifted to a brisk wind of 3 or 4 Bft from the NE. Temps from the mid to upper 30's. Flecks of snow at day's end.

Raptor Observations:
Local and migrating activity was evenly distributed through the day, but sparse and mostly over the ridge or Rooney valley and very few raptors to the west. Birds seemed to struggle into the wind, or drift looking for good air currents (somewhat subjective observation). Of the migrating Red-tails, two were intermediate morphs. A local Golden Eagle flew north to south past the site at eye level and received significant harassment from a local Red-tail. A Prairie Falcon(s) was sighted twice in an almost migrating direction but veered away before passing I-70.

Non-raptor Observations:
Woodhouse's Scrub Jay, Townsend's Solitaire, Bushtit, American Robin, Common Raven. Three elk grazed and rested on the east slope of the ridge all day.

Predictions:
Maybe some sun and bare ground will be better for air currents and raptor movement? The lower portion of the trail was muddy, but not as sloppy as it gets sometimes.

[cobirds] Hooded Merganser (Loveland)

There was a Hooded Merganser in the SW part of Rist Benson Reservoir around 11 AM today.  May have been a couple Red-necked Grebes too, but didn't get a good enough look at them.

A recent trip to DeWeese Reservoir, (Custer county) and new signage erected on all approaches to the lake had me wondering about birding trips in 2018.
<image2.jpeg>
I reached out to Jena Sanchez, a volunteer coordinator for the CPW Southeast area about this signage and what it would mean for birders. I am a frequent visitor accompanying my husband who has a fishing license. Her email reply is below,  and worth saving if you plan to visit DeWeese SWA.

All the best,

Subject: Additional DeWeese Info

Kathy, having learned what we did about the DeWeese permit, I didn't think that each person would need the permit so I checked back with the Wildlife Officer Justin Krall who covers DeWeese, and here is what he said about you guys needing the DeWeese special permit:

I would say they are good to go up here.  Technically anyone ages

18-64 needs to have either a fishing/hunting license or a SWA access
permit for Deweese, but since they are birding I don't have an issue.

Sent from my iPhone -Justin Krall

So you guys are good to go, at least for DeWeese and you can tell anyone that you've talked to me and Justin.  Thanks for covering your bases.  -Jena
