[cobirds] Photographic Big Year 2017

Well, the year is coming to an end.  For most of us, we start all over again and set new goals to motivate ourselves to get back out in the field.  This past year, a few of good friends (David Starbuck, Art Hudak, and Darien Obrien---a.k.a the Party Train) and I decided to set a goal of not only seeing 500 ABA species, but also getting photo evidence of each one.  I must say it was more difficult than I expected.  We ended up spending more time in the field, attempting to get the photo documentation.  There were times when we saw the bird and struck out because it vanished before getting the camera up.  What it did do was to get a group of working guys together, going on trips and enjoying the best hobby in the world, while sharing laughs until our guts hurt, and seeing amazing, beautiful areas in our state and beyond.  Indisputably, the best part was the camaraderie that we shared not only on our Sunday day trips, but on the trips out of town.  In the end, we were able to see and photograph 525 amazing ABA species(Last bird of the year was a Whiskered Screech Owl on the 31st), which never would have happened without our first of the year challenge.  As we venture into a new year, I encourage you to try a group challenge.  At the end of the year, you are rewarded with amazing memories that will last a lifetime!!!  If you have time, take a look at our gallery that has all 525 species photos:  https://partytrain.smugmug.com/

[cobirds] Snowy Owl, Larimer County

Folks,
Today, while scouting for the Jan 1 Loveland CBC, I discovered a Snowy Owl. It was quite skiddish and flew to a perch about 600 yards away on private land. I've provided the location to the sector leader who will look for it tomorrow during the CBC. Based on the experience tomorrow, we will determine the appropriate viewing protocol (if any may be required) and instructions for how to locate and view this rare arctic visitor.

I hope that we can cooperate as a cohesive birding community to ensure that the owl's presence is a positive one both for the Owl and people (birders/local residents/property owners).

Best wishes for a great New Birding Year in 2018!

[cobirds] Happy New BIG Year 2018 (and Jan 1 request)

Hi CoBirders,

With the advent of 2018 comes DFO's Big Year! We will seek to find as many species as possible in Colorado on planned DFO field trips only. That really makes it challenging! We begin right off on January 1 with a trip led by Joey Kellner to Pueblo Reservoir and Canon City area. Then on Jan 2nd I am leading a trip in the southwest Metro Area.

Field Trip List:

Article on Big Year in Lark Bunting:

A new batch of exciting February DFO field trips becomes available for registrations tomorrow! Both January and February have far reaching trips outside of the Denver Metro Area. Those living away from the Denver Metro Area might want to keep an eye out for upcoming DFO trips close to your home area.

ALSO: On Jan 1 I would appreciate any word posted to this list of any new rare birds found on Jan 1, or continuing rarities such as the (maybe gone?) Snowy Owl, etc. Our Jan 2 trip in the Metro Area will seek to find a stake out or two in addition to other birds.

Here we go. Come out and join the Big Year. More eyes and ears, more fun.

Re: [cobirds] Mountain Chickadees - Niwot (Boulder)

I have one or two this year, mixed with the BCCH. Some years I don't see them, but a number were just west of my house along the LOBO trail for the Longmont CBC, along with a few Spotted Towhees, someone else who I only have very infrequently at my feeders and usually only during migration. So since both are so close, I am wondering what I can do to entice them more regularly. More brush piles? I think the food offerings are fine.

[cobirds] Varied thrush El Paso County

I was birding North Cheyenne Canyon Park near Colorado Springs and a varied thrush flew up into a bush. It was a very clear look, very distinctive but was a little too far for my iPhone to really capture. It is along Cheyenne creek just upstream from the footbridge near the parking lot.

There was also pigmy nuthatches, downy woodpecker's and two robins. While I was leaving, A flock of 40 crows flew overhead.

[cobirds] Re: Swans on Valmont Reservoir

OK, I went out there this morning to take another look, and brought the scope along.  From what I can tell, these are Trumpeter Swans, based on the size, the bill shape, and by comparing them with the Tundra Swan that is also out there.  As Donald Jones noted, they are larger than the Tundra Swan, with stockier necks and bigger bills.  The bill has a fairly straight edge along the side where it meets the feathers, and has a distinct U or V shape between the eyes where the dark beak meets the feathers.  The Tundra Swan has more of a flat line between the eyes.  I got a few pictures, but couldn't get one of them facing me to show the U shape.  Views through the scope showed this quite clearly, however.  The three larger swans seemed to stay together most of the time, with the smaller one getting a little farther away from the group from time to time.

On another note, while observing the large merganser flock, I spotted some Western Grebes along with another Grebe that looked like it could be one of the Red-Necked Grebes that were here recently.  It was on the far side of the reservoir, and there was a light wind with a little fog, so I was not able to see it clearly, but the size and general coloration was right for a RNGR.

OK, now to warm up my toes!

[cobirds] Wintering Marsh Wrens along the Front Range

Hello cobirders-

I was walking along the Platte River the other day and had a wintering Marsh Wren there, which surprised me, though I know they winter along the Front Range. This got me thinking about the Eastern vs Western versions of Marsh Wren, and whether the bird I saw is more likely to be one than the other. Unfortunately, it didn't sing, and I didn't see it well, so I can't get to a subspecies ID on the bird I saw. In googling around, I found this great article (link below) by Tony Leukering and Nathan Pieplow, which was written in 2010. They say that during the breeding season, all our birds are Western Marsh Wren. However, they, and one of their sources, note that "northern form iliacus and the eastern dissaeptus should occur in eastern counties in winter or during migration."

So, what have we learned since then? Has anyone had an Eastern Marsh Wren along the Front Range in the winter? Is it safe to assume all the wintering Marsh Wrens are Western?

[cobirds] Re: Standley Snowy

I was there yesterday from about 10:00 a.m. until a little after 12:00 p.m., with no luck, and no reported sightings. I heard that it was seen later in the afternoon around 2-3 p.m. in a nearby neighborhood.

[cobirds] Swans on Valmont Reservoir

Hi all -

After I was out visiting some friends, I stopped by Valmont Reservoir for a quick visit yesterday afternoon hoping to see something interesting.  On the east end of the reservoir, there were four large swans.  Tundra Swans, I thought, and tried to get better looks with my binoculars, since I had left the scope at home.  As I watched them, it looked like three of them were larger than the fourth, and the smaller one had more grey on it as well.  I couldn't see them well enough to call the larger ones Trumpeter Swans, but it seemed possible.  In the evening, while I was looking through eBird reports from the day, I noticed that a couple of other birders (Paul Bonfils and Donald Jones) had been out there as well, and both of them ID'd them as Trumpeter Swans, and Paul had a couple of pictures posted. Hopefully they will stick around for a little while so I can get back out there with a scope.

On another note, while watching the birds that were close enough to see with binoculars, I noticed a large gull in the water in with a small flock of Coots and Hooded Mergansers.  It seemed larger than a Ring-Billed, and I couldn't make out any black on any of the feathers.  Donald Jones reported a Glaucous Gull yesterday, so I may have seen that one as well.  Once again, I was kicking myself for leaving the scope at home.

There was also a couple of juvenile Bald Eagles in the vicinity.  The cold weather has not affected Valmont Reservoir, it didn't have any ice on it that I could see.  The forecast for today is more cold weather with a little snow, but as long as the wind stays calm, it shouldn't be too bad.

Good Birding -

re: *** SPAM 10: [cobirds] Mountain Chickadees - Jeffco (Wads and Bowles)

I moved to Aurora this summer, and have three black-caps now.
But last winter at roughly Colorado Blvd and Orchard, I had two mountains on and off during the winter into early spring.

Given all the rarities being posted, I hesitated with mountain chickadees, but it's been a really long time since we had them at our feeders (at least five years), so I thought I'd go ahead.  We have at least two of them this morning, and we live about half a mile south of Clement park in Littleton.

Re: [cobirds] Mountain Chickadees - Jeffco (Wads and Bowles)

I'm a bit south and east, at Santa fe and Highlands Ranch Parkway.  They are at my feeders too, although they've been here for quite some time (late August). They arrived the same time as the red breasted nuthatches.

[cobirds] Black Phoebe relocated, Adams County

Hi CoBirders
I was able to relocate the Black Phoebe today at about 9:55 at the sewage treatment plant along the S. Platte in Adams County. It was just at the bridge that crosses the Platte there. I had good views as it was flycatching and returning to the same location. Black with white belly that forms a peak towards chest. Head feathers are somewhat raised in back.

[cobirds] San Luis Valley Cranes and Oddities

Wow what birds on the east slope. Great opportunities for sure.
In the San Luis Valley, we had a brown Christmas, warm with 50 degree temps. It is no wonder that yesterday, as I was ice skating with my daughter, that 8 Sandhill Cranes flew overhead. Not totally unexpected but unusual for sure. In addition, the Monte Vista Christmas Count found 25 Brown-headed Cowbirds for a first winter record for this area. Poor skiing but the ice skating is great this year! Happy new year from the San Luis valley!

[cobirds] Re: Snowy Owl YES

The snowy owl was present again today. Many people saw it at about 4 PM on a house at 99th Pl and Independence DR, which is accessible from 100th AV. This was a little east of the High School the bird was at yesterday. The owl does seem to favor this area. This was a great way to finish of the year.

[cobirds] Harris's Hawk Ft Collins Larimer Co

Saw the Harris's Hawk today, west of the Colorado Welcome Center, off of Prospect. When three people (not me) walked towards it for photos, it did head to the north side of Prospect, and then up Summit to a tree in a homeowner's front yard. Although it doesn't seem to mind cars, it is skittish about people. So, if you go to see it, stay very far away, or view from your car.
It's a beautiful bird!!

[cobirds] Red-breasted Sapsucker, Yes! (Mirada Rd, COS)

Four or five of us got a great show around 2:30. The bird was perched about 8' up on the western-most large limb of the cottonwood tree adjacent to the three Austrian pines, & stayed fairly stationary & in plain sight for close to 10 minutes, occasionally preening & stretching, before slipping around to the back side of the limb, and then disappearing back into the Austrians.

[cobirds] National Geographic and Birds

Hi all

Sharing ... Nat Geo Mag embarking upon for 2018, "The Year of the Birds".  They write ...
  • "In the January 2018 issue of National Geographic magazine, we kick off a yearlong salute to birds to mark the centennial year of America's Migratory Bird Treaty Act. We begin with an essay by Jonathan Franzen, who passionately explains why birds should matter to all of us, and why continuing to protect them is a necessity."

Hi CoBirders
While scouting for the Denver, Urban, Christmas Count I found a black Phoebe on the S. Platte River, at the sewage treatment plant, near 64th and York. Also a Black-Crowned Night Heron nearby. Four Wild Turkeys were along the Platte, south of 58th and York.

[cobirds] Lincoln County: Snowy Owl

Yesterday afternoon, 28 Dec, I got a call at work.  It was a co-worker, who is also a birder, that was driving back to Colorado Springs, from her vacation in Wisconsin. While her and her family were on I-70, between Genoa and Limon, they had spotted a female Snowy Owl sitting on a telephone pole.  Since they were eager to get home, they didn't stop and photograph the owl, nor did they get an exact location.  She did say it was very close to Limon (east of Limon).  I realize this notification may not be much help, but I thought I would post it anyways.  This way anyone heading out that way over the weekend might be able to relocate the owl.
