[cobirds] Equalizer Lake, Sep. 30

Hi,

I paid a brief visit to Equalizer Lake this morning and found that the water has been drawn down, exposing mudflats at the south end of the lake.  Birds like to roost here during these conditions.  Today's highlights were an immature Plegadis ibis, which appeared out of nowhere, hung out for a while and then flew off to the south a little while later and an adult Lesser Black-backed Gull that was one of five gull species present.  I am assuming the ibis was a White-faced based because it's much more likely in Colo. but Glossy can't be totally ruled out, as it showed a grayish face.  I was too far away to see the eye color.

Oh, and the next birdwalks at Equalizer, sponsored by the High Plains Environmental Center, are scheduled for 8am on Sat. Oct. 11 and Sun. Nov. 2.  I'll post reminders later.

Bye for now,

Scott Baron
Loveland, Colo.

[cobirds] RMBO Barr Banding Report, 9/29 and 9/30/14

Things continue to be slow.  On  Monday, 9/29, we got more or less drizzled out; the weather cleared long enough for us to open the Nature Center nets and catch some White-crowned Sparrows for the school group, and that was about it.

Today, Tuesday, 9/30, we banded 12 birds:

Black-capped Chickadee 1
Orange-crowned Warbler 2
Common Yellowthroat 1
Spotted Towhee 1
Song Sparrow 1
Gambel's White-crowned Sparrow 4
House Finch 1
House Sparrow 1

Cool birds of the day were 4 recaptured Bushtits.  We banded these birds on September 4.  I figured that we'd just caught a small number of a larger flock, but then we caught exactly the same 4 birds today, so I decided it was time to do a little reading.  Cornell's Birds of North America says a flock of Bushtits can be 3 to more than 40 birds.  This little flock is composed of 2 females (have yellow eyes) and 2 probable males.  (Pyle, in Identification Guide to North American Birds, says you can't sex hatch year Bushtits based on eye color until after the end of the first fall molt, and all 4 of these birds were molting when we caught them on September 4 and were still in molt today. We were unsure of age based on other criteria.)  Bushtits are an unusual species at Barr; they aren't even on the Barr Lake State Park Checklist.  Banding records include 9 caught in 1996 and 1 in 2006.  Now we have this little flock hanging around, molting, for almost a month!

Okay.  Station is open, weather permitting, through Sat.  Then closed Sun and Mon.  Open Tues through Sat next week, and that's the end of the banding season.  We will take the station down at the end of banding on Sat, Oct 11. We are opening the nets at 6:50 a.m., and usually have birds back at the station by 7:30.  We usually close between 11 and 12, depending on heat, wind, and number of birds.

[cobirds] Ken Caryl Valley, Jefferson

I visited a handful of sites in my home area this morning, 9/30. A HY Harris's Sparrow along Massey Draw upstream of Valley Parkway was early (I think) and delightful. A Brown Thrasher was in an open space area near Bradford Elementary. An adult Broad-winged Hawk was flying south along the Dakota Hogback near Massey Draw.

Still 7 Rock Wrens noted this morning, and a handful of Rufous Hummers, 3 Green-tailed Towhees, and 2 Sage Thrashers. 22 Turkey Vultures went south along the Dakota Hogback in one pulse, sharing airspace with one leisurely Golden Eagle

The area where I had the Ladder-backed Woodpecker last week was seemingly ladder-less.

[cobirds] Sondermann Park Local Interest 9/30 (El Paso)

I walked Sondermann Park in Colorado Springs this morning, and found a few birds of note. There were a few Wilson's Warblers left, though numbers seem to be dropping. In the northern section of the park, in a large russian olive, I found a Cassin's Vireo. Also here was an unexpected Marsh Wren. It was mostly in the three-leaf sumac beside the path, though eventually dropped down into the willows along the creek. A cooper's hawk hunting along the creek kept things fairly quiet, except for one very upset kinglet. Also a Western Tanager near the entrance to the park, and MacGillivray's Warbler in the sumac along the main wash. A few mountain birds were represented too with a Red-breasted Nuthatch and a Brown Creeper.

[cobirds] They should rename it "the Bald Eagle stroke" (& loon sighting)

Hello, Birders.

Late yesterday afternoon, Monday, Sept. 29, in the rain, Hannah and Andrew and I saw a Common Loon at Baseline Reservoir, Boulder County. A bit early. Distant, cell-phone-through-raindrops-and-a-scope photos here:

http://tinyurl.com/CoLo-2014-09-29

But the really cool thing we saw was a Bald Eagle hunting American Coots. The main flock of 78 coots bunched together incredibly tight--they looked like a single black plank on the water. Two other coots declined to join the main flock. Big mistake. The eagle rose straight up, hovered like an Osprey, and plunged straight down into the water, pouncing on one of the coots. Then, for the longest time, the eagle just floated on the water, looking for all the world like a Laysan Albatross.

Eventually, the eagle realized it had a problem, namely, how to get the coot back to shore. So the eagle swam to the shore by propelling itself with its wings with wild, flailing, circular motions. It was exactly what humans call the "butterfly stroke," except butterflies don't fly like that, and I doubt they swim like that. It was incredibly awkward-looking, but fast and efficient--just like all the kids doing the butterfly stroke at Hannah's swim meets, come to think of it.

Soon enough, the eagle had swum back to shore and was standing on a rock, drenched, eating a coot.

While we were out there, we saw 22 Ruddy Ducks fall out. I don't get to see Ruddy Ducks in flight all that often, so it was a neat sight.

[cobirds] Eastern Meadowlark - Weld, Mew Gull - Larimer

Greetings All

I started the morning at CROW VALLEY. The campground was about as dead as could be except for a slew of BROAD-WINGED HAWKS - 5
1 adult light morph
3 imm light morph, 1 heavily marked, 2 lightly marked
1 dark morph, imm

There was also a sapsucker along the west fence-line that is a juv, and has YB SAPSUCKER in it, I am just not sure that it does not have some RN Sap (a bit of red in throat, supercilium narrow, back markings perhaps a bit linear, perhaps not). Still working on that one. Will post photos

So, most of the birds were in the open areas north of the campground. And most of those birds skeedaddled within a couple hours.
The highlight was an EASTERN MEADOWLARK. The field below the old ranger's station, that field that was wet in spring and had ibis and bittern, is now tall grass -- looks good for Sprague's Pipit (none of those, however). The field was full of meadowlarks and flickers. There was one tree with a dozen or more meadowlarks and 16 flickers (and a couple sparrows). In that tree was a calling Eastern Meadowlark (both bzzzrt and rattle calls). Still of interest, but of lesser note, there was a HARRIS'S SPARROW in the tree as well.

Finally, at the north edge of the campground, there was a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW

The other major highlights were at TIMNATH RESERVOIR, Larimer.
1 juv MEW GULL
1 basic COMMON TERN
1 juv SABINE'S GULL

[cobirds] RMBO Connected Lakes Banding Report 9/29/14

It was a slow day of banding at Connected Lakes, with the threat of yesterday's storm continuing all morning.  We only banded 4 birds.  BUT, one of them was a very rare capture for our station - an Ovenbird!

Breakdown of new captures, 9/29:

Western Scrub Jay - 1
Ovenbird - 1
Spotted Towhee - 1
Gambel's White-crowned Sparrow - 1

Let's hope for better weather and better banding tomorrow!

[cobirds] Chatfield SP mostly (JeffCo/Douglas)

This morning a Pectoral Sandpiper and 4 Sanderlings were flying repeatedly past the Chatfield Swim Beach without ever landing.
I saw individual Sabine's Gulls here and there, I think adding up to at least 2 and maybe 3 birds (all juv.). Also 1 Common Tern and 4 Forster's Terns, and 1 Black-crowned Night-Heron. Land birding was mostly rather slow, except some nice flocks of Mountain Bluebird and Western Bluebirds were at the campground.

A female Townsend's Warbler visited my yard in the rain at the end of the day.

[cobirds] Re: Palm Warbler. Last Chance. Washington County

In case anyone plans on searching for the Palm Warbler at Last Chance, you may want to make sure I didn't misidentify it.  The yellow undertail coverts, eyeline, eyebrow, and the constant tail pumping are what sold me.  However, here is a very poor quality image (rain, overcast, distant) of the bird in question.  Feel free to decide for yourself.  The bird was there between 0715 - 0730 in the morning and I never saw it again, despite two additional trips back to that area.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/breitschbirding/15372694836/

Hopefully, at some point tonight I may have some pictures of the two plovers and the two phalaropes (wilson's and red-necked) out past Anton.

[cobirds] Cherry Creek

Hi

3 Sabine's Gulls, 3 Common Terns. in the northeast section of Cherry Creek

For those who may be interested
Edward Sabine, while on the 1819 John Ross Exhibition, while off of Greenland collected an odd gull. The gull was sent back to England where Joseph Sabine, an ornithologist, described the new gull species, Sabine's Gull, in honor of his brother.

[cobirds] Huerfano County Update: I "Great"ly Egret the silly Tern this post has made!

Sorry for the silly title, but just could not help myself! Had a great time with Scooter out at Lathrop State Park this morning. There were:

Big rafts of American Coots and Ruddy Ducks
A few American Wigeon
One Redhead and a few Blue-winged Teal
One Green-winged Teal
Quite a few Clark's Grebes
A Belted Kingfisher being harassed by a Merlin!
Still a few Osprey about
Lots of Ruby-crowned Kinglets and Bushtits
A few Wilson's Warblers
Green-tailed and Spotted Towhees
Chipping and White-crowned Sparrows
Lots of lesser Goldfinches, American Robins and Red-shafted Flickers
Loads of Black-billed Magpie and Western Scrub-Jay

It is unusual for us to see Great Egret here. We might get one or two a year and they typically pass through in Spring, so it was a very pleasant surprise to 16 in one tree! While counting them a tern flew right into my binocular field of view. There were 5 Forster's Terns in all. Many times the terns would be a in a nice fairly tight group on Martin Lake.

[cobirds] Cherry Creek Sabine's Gull continues, Sep. 28th, 2014

Hi all,

Just in case anyone is still in need of a Sabine's Gull, I saw what I would expect to be the same bird again today, Sunday, September 28th. I had great views of it in flight, while standing at the handicapped accessible fishing site (Carolyn Armstrong) in Cherry Creek S.P., Arapahoe County.

Cheers,

[cobirds] Larimer County, Sep. 28

Hi,

I noted 3 Mountain Chickadees foraging with Black-capped Chickadees and Red-breasted Nuthatches at Grandview Cemetery in Fort Collins this morning.  Other birds of note were Brown Creeper, both kinglets, Audubon's Warbler, Wilson's Warbler, Dark-eyed Junco (not seen well enough to ID race), Red Crossbill and Pine Siskin.

I also found 2 Mountain Chickadees at Sherwood Forest (grove in front of Forestry building) on the CSU campus later this morning.  They also were mixed with Black-cappeds and Red-br. Nuts.

I've seen and heard up to 17 crossbills at a time on the CSU campus in the past week, mostly as flyovers.

I saw an ebird report of a Sabine's Gull at Lake Loveland today.  I checked out the lake just before sunset and observed the bird in flight and on the water.

Happy birding,

Scott Baron
Loveland, Colo.

[cobirds] Saturday RMArsenal Wildlife

Hi cobirders. My son Bob took me here from Ten am to 1:30 pm here. A mostly sunny warm calm day with few birds showing up . Rock Wren was my first this year. A birder from
Oregon with a camera w a telescopic lens, said he saw five. and not much else. several small flocks of sparrows mostly Chipping. A flock of wintering Western Meadowlarks, a couple
singing to keep the flock together as they were feeding in the grass. There were at least 5 probably more. At feeder near the Contact station there was a family of American Goldfinches.

The small lakes near there had no birds. We did see 3 Red Tailed Hawks. The large lake on the north side of the road going east provided the large number of birds. Mostly Coots about
200 and Ruddy Ducks 40. There were a few Redheads, Pied-billed Grebes, and D. C. Cormorants.

Should have gone to Chatfield. Lunch in grove of trees.

Nice day not many birds.

[cobirds] Chatfield State Park (Jeff/Doug), Anton (Wash) 9/27

Hi Everyone—

Saturday 9/27 I visited Chatfield State Park. I saw a total of 5 Sabine’s Gulls (4 imm, 1 adult) east of the marina toward the mouth of Plum Creek. In the woods along Plum Creek south of Plum Creek Picnic Area, I heard a sapsucker sp. and a Gray Catbird. When I saw Joe Roller’s e-mail about Bill K and the shorebirds of Washington County, I drove straight over, and happily, most of them were still there: 1 Am Golden-Plover, 2 Black-bellied Plovers, 4 Killdeer, about 5 each of Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs, 3 Baird’s Sandpipers, 1 Wilson’s Phalarope. Lots of ducks there, too (Mallard, Blue-winged Teal, Northern Shoveler, Green-winged Teal). CR CC goes through downtown Anton. CR 12 veers off of US 36 two miles east at CR EE; go 4 miles east on CR 12 to CR JJ, stop at the big black mailbox.

[cobirds] Red Phalarope, etc., Union Reservoir, Weld County, Sept. 27

Hello, Birders.

Andrew and I saw a Red Phalarope yesterday afternoon, Saturday, Sept. 27, at Union Reservoir, Weld County.

Also of note were 8 tardy Northern Rough-winged Swallows. At least 70 Franklin's Gulls were hanging on, and we saw Great-tailed Grackles, singles and couples, at various spots around the lake.

The Aechmophorus grebe flock there is amazing. We counted 1,680, mainly Westerns Grebes, but also a decent number of Clark's Grebes. As in recent years, pint-sized young birds are present, despite the late date. The grebes are quite vocal, which is nice. Along with all the Aechmophori, we saw a single, early Horned Grebe, a bird well along in its prebasic molt.

eBird checklist, with details on the phalarope, here:

http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S19965830

We had two that got away. I heard a Sprague's-like call note above the lake, but saw no bird; coulda been an odd Horned Lark or American Pipit, of course. And on the drive down from Cheyenne (more on that in a sec.), I thought we saw a Broad-winged Hawk flying across I-25 near Loveland; not sure.

Regarding Cheyenne, Andrew and I had been up there earlier in the day, for the High Plains Audubon Society's 40th anniversary. We started off the morning at the very birdy Wyoming Hereford Ranch, Laramie County, where the highlight was at least 4, and probably more, White-throated Sparrows. Lots of other nice stuff there. WYOBirds trip report here:

Oh, and a late report. Here are some bird sounds, insect sounds, and insect photos from around Boulder County a week ago, Sunday, Sept. 21:

[cobirds] Sabine's Gull near Jefferson, Park County

A juv. Sabine's Gull was on the natural pond along the north side of Park County Road 34 this afternoon. Nice cross section of ducks, but nothing else too notable there.

A late Turkey Vulture was tilting over Kenosha Pass.

Stops along the road to Boreas Pass (CR 33) had few birds, but there were several Gray Jays, Pine Grosbeak, and American Three-toed Woodpecker.

The real point of the afternoon outing was to revel in the fall color of the aspens, and it was well worth it, even if there were so many other people out for the same purpose on this Saturday afternoon.

[cobirds] Get Your Kicks on Route 36

Okay, so I’m off by 30.

Gwen Moore, John Vanderpoel and I headed out US 36 for some eastern plains birding today and had a terrific time.

We started at Last Chance for Sunrise (sounds like a movie title, eh?), where things were very birdy if not overly rare.  Right at sun-up dozens of Chipping Sparrows wiped away the duck week to take a drink from the Last Chance water hole.  All told we had 6 sparrow species at LC including lots of Lincoln’s and White-crowned, a few Clay-colored, a Song and a White-throated.  We could only get on four warbler species, all highly normal, but John though he might have had a Chestnut-sided and I saw some sort of tanager.  A Peregrine Falcon was terrifying Barn Swallows for grins.

We kept going east on US 36 and were in for a big surprise.  After we passed a disappointing, totally dry Anton Playa (about 2 miles west of Anton) we ended up entered the land of a thousand playas!  Going east from Anton for about 12 miles, virtually every low spot on the plains was filled with water, and usually birds, too.  IF YOU SEEK BIRDING PLANS FOR TOMORROW, I STRONGLY ENCOURAGE YOU TO THINK ABOUT GOING OUT TO ANTON (20 miles past Last Chance) AND CONTINUING EAST ON CR 12 FOR ANOTHER 10 MILES OR SO.  There are literally 100 playas in the area, many right by the road, some right over the road!  We spent over 2 hours covering about 3 miles.

There were lots of shorebirds and lots of variety to be found, the best of which included American Golden-Plover, Black-bellied Plover, Willet, both yellowlegs, Long-billed Dowitcher, Least and Baird’s Sandpiper.  (The most productive spot was at WCR 12 X JJ.)  The shore lines were also full of American Pipits, Savannah Sparrows and Vesper Sparrows, plus a couple of Chestnut-collard Longspurs.  Oh, should I also mention that at the afore mentioned spot we flushed a double-digit covey (?) of Greater Prairie Chickens.

Well, enough of that stuff on to Pipit Hill.  We kept going east on US 36 (for mountain invasion fans—a Red-breasted Nuthatch in Cope).  Driving past the cottonwood sapling farm formerly known as Bonny Reservoir is painful to talk about.  But not so Pipit Hill.  Go east past the old Bonny Dam to Hale and continue north.  Immediately after you cross the “river” take the track to the NW, continuing on the fainter track to the right when the first is about to turn into someone’s driveway.  At the top of the hill, just before a windmill operated water hole, we had 3 Sprague’s Pipits, and more than that, we got to watch them on the ground and even got photos.

Beyond that we poked around Hale Corners to no avail, found a pair of Osprey at Hale Ponds (where there were dozens of horses and spaniels) and then dipped into Kansas to look for the lost Bonny Water (but I can’t talk about that here).

All told we had over 70 species for the day.

[cobirds] RMBO Barr Banding Report, 9/27/14

Don't have anyway to verify this, but this might be the slowest few days in a row ever!  Today, we caught 8 birds in our 7:20 run, 3 at 7:50, 2 at the Nature Center nets, and nothing else the rest of the morning.  Luckily, we had lot of one-of-a-kinds, so the Kingery's Beginning Birder class had an opportunity to learn about lots of species.  Here were the 8 new birds for the season (the balance of those we caught were recaptures):

Rock Wren 1
House Wren 1
Ruby-crowned Kinglet 1
Orange-crowned Warbler 1
Clay-colored Sparrow 1
Song Sparrow 1
Gambel's White-crowned Sparrow 1
Dark-eyed Junco, Oregon 1

Closed Sun and Mon; then open Tues through Sat again next week.  We usually have our first birds back at the station by about 7:30.  We usually close between 11 and 12, but have been closing somewhat earlier during this heat.  Hoping for a weather change soon!

[cobirds] American Golden-Plover with many shorebirds on playas west of Cope, Washington County, 9/27 AM

Bill Kaempfer just phoned me to report news from the field on the eastern plains. He, John Vanderpoel and Gwen Moore found that Last Chance was "very birdy," with White-throated Sparrow the featured attraction.
Continuing east on Highway 36 they found a lot of shorebirds on four large playas west of Cope, Colorado. The playas are near Washington County roads JJ and 12, where there was an American Golden-Plover with two Black-bellied Plovers, among an assortment of peep, yellowlegs and a Solitary Sandpiper.
