[cobirds] Thick-billed longspur

I recently visited the Pawnee Grasslands for the first time in almost 20 years.  On my previous visits I saw thick-billed longspurs on the bird tour, but I didn't see or hear any this time.  Are they now less common on the grassland than in previous years?

Re: [cobirds] Digest for cobirds@googlegroups.com - 4 updates in 2 topics - 6/29/2023

California Quail isn't listed on the Bird Banding Laboratory's site because the BBL doesn't issue bands for any resident upland game birds.  (Banding of them is done through states and provinces.)  A list of standardized ornithological codes can be found here: https://www.birdpop.org/pages/birdSpeciesCodes.php

** Caution: EXTERNAL Sender **

Following up on the email comment expressing frustration about folks using 4-digit codes instead of the actual species name... I agree wholeheartedly that we should not assume that everyone who reads CoBirds knows all the 4-digit band codes.  When I went to the official government website to look up this CAQU code I did not find it in their list of band codes.

The CAQU was approved this morning. I wanted to share out the enhanced
recording so others could hear it. There are two recordings - one of the
single call which I have in my recording but improved, and one where the
improved single recorded call is repeated 5 times so you get a better sense
of it.

Why are people using these 4-letter codes lately on CoBirds? I thought the rules are to use the full name of the bird species. Not everyone has these codes memorized. Also, please, everyone, include location and county.

I heard it just west of the Swinging Bridge Campground near the trail. There is a pond on the north side of that trail, and it was just north of that. I walked north along the hillside on the east side of the pond, hoping to get closer and get a better recording, and maybe even a sighting, but the one call is all I have.

The shape of the call aligns with a CAQU, and I counted 8 YBCH in the area. I have attached the recording. The quail sound is at the 22 second mark.

At the recommendation of a very experienced birder friend, I've added the bird and the recording to my eBird list. You can hear it here: https://ebird.org/checklist/S142299120

If there is consensus here that it may be a quail, I will submit it to the records committee.

Richard Bunn facilitated the creation of a new hotspot at the Hepatic
Tanager site on Barret Road in Fremont County, just over the El Paso County
line. If anyone has been to see these birds, it is suggested that you go
on to eBird on the web and go to your checklist and update the location to
the new hotspot "Mountaindale Cabins & RV Resort".
