Observers: Dave Erickson, Lila Varel , Mariane Erickson

Visitors:
Lila Varel and Jason (didn't catch his last name) helped observe in the morning. Mariane and Dave Erickson observed in the afternoon. Trail traffic was low today, with only 9 visitors stopping by the Hawk Watch.

Weather:
Winds started from the N today with clear skies until late morning. By the afternoon winds had shifted to SE but were variable during the 1600 hour. Precipitation could be seen south of us for most of the afternoon.

Raptor Observations:
Birds started slow and high today, but as the winds shifted to the S birds picked up and were on all sides of the ridge today. TUVU numbers are picking up and a local has settled into the area. Local RTHA, GOEA, BAEA, and SSHA were seen today. Today's highlights all came through in the last hour and a half, with an overhead OSPR and FEHA, and three AMKE seen darting past in the last 5 minutes of the count.

Non-raptor Observations:
Corvid activity was very high today, with another "congress" of 11 seen near the towers on Mt. Morrison. Mountain Chickadee, White-throated Swift, and the usual passerines were seen on the ridge.

Predictions:
Heavy cloud cover expected tomorrow with N winds picking up speed in the afternoon.

Site Description
Dinosaur Ridge is the only regularly staffed hawkwatch in Colorado and is the
best place in the world to see migrating Ferruginous Hawks. Dinosaur Ridge may
be the best place in the country to see the rare dark morph of the Broad-winged
Hawk (a few are seen each spring). Hawkwatchers who linger long enough may see
resident Golden Eagles, Red-tailed Hawks and Prairie Falcons, in addition to
migrating Swainson's, Cooper's and Sharp-shinned Hawks, American Kestrels and
Turkey Vultures. Peregrine Falcons and Ferruginous Hawks are uncommon; Northern
Goshawk is rare but regular. Non-raptor species include Rock Wren, and sometimes
Bushtit, Western Bluebird, Sandhill Crane, White-throated Swift, American White
Pelican or Dusky Grouse. Birders of any skill level are always welcome.
HawkWatch at Dinosaur Ridge is generally staffed by volunteers from about 9 AM
to around 3 PM from March 1st to May 7th.

Directions to site:
From exit 259 on I-70 towards Morrison, drive south under freeway and take left
into first parking lot, the Stegosaurus lot. Follow small signs from the
southwest end of lot to the hawkwatch site. The hike starts heading east on an
old two-track and quickly turns south onto a trail on the west side of the
ridge. When the trail nears the top of the ridge, turn left, head through the
gate, and walk to the clearly-visible, flat area at the crest of the ridge.
(Distance: 0.56 miles, Elevation gain: 259 feet)

[cobirds] White-winged Junco / Denver

I had a White-winged form of Dark-eyed Junco in my yard in Harvey Park this morning.  While range maps do show that we're in their winter range, I have had every imaginable form of Junco every winter for 17 years here, but have only ever seen White-winged in the Black Hills of South Dakota.  I'll put a photo on the CFO Facebook page.

[cobirds] Join the Second Colorado Birding Challenge for spring migration fun

Please join other Colorado birders for the second Colorado Birding Challenge May 7, 2022. This is an opportunity to help recovery of the threatened Gunnison Sage-Grouse while enjoying an exciting day of birding in the heart of spring migration. It's less than forty days off. There are three ways you can participate. You can join a team birding one of Colorado's 64 diverse counties. Better yet, pick a county not yet covered by another team and form your own team to compete or simply have a great day birding. And, if birding that day doesn't suit your schedule, you can still donate to support a friend or team and help the Gunnison Sage-Grouse. If you haven't yet, please visit cobirds.org/COBC to register or sponsor one of the existing participants or teams with a financial donation. Funds raised will help conserve the Gunnison Sage-Grouse by strengthening the battle against cheatgrass invasion in the Gunnison Basin. You will find all details at www.cobirds.org. Direct questions to cobc@cobirds.org or consult our FAQ on the web site.

[cobirds] Probably a sage thrasher, not Swainson's thrush--Boulder

Thanks to kind and gentle emails from Christian Nunes, Nick Komar, and Dave Leatherman I now think that the bird I saw near Marshall Reservoir was a sage thrasher, not a Swainson's thrush. My impression was that the tail was too short and the bill too straight to be a thrasher, but after studying Cornell's photos, I concur that sage thrasher is very close to my now-fuzzy memory. Plus, it is a much more likely bird to be in that habitat.

[cobirds] new DFO Saw-whet Owl mini field trip opportunity 4/2

I set up another DFO field trip opportunity for Saturday April 2 for a special short evening trip to try for the Nor. Saw-whet Owl at private open space at Ken Caryl Ranch. We have a good chance that we will hear it, and we might see it, too. Details and registration are on the DFO field trip page:

[cobirds] Farewell Cranes

As I write this, 10:09 am scores of cranes are high aloft and headed north on what appears to be favorable se winds aloft. You have to strain your eyes to see these tiny specks against the vast blue sky.  Last night I still saw 4,000 birds at Monte Vista NWR but those will be dwindling on favorable winds.

All in all, it was a bit of a strange year. The manicured and mowed barley fields where normally birds flocked to feed in, were relatively avoided. Many Birds seems to be flying some distance from the refuge morning and evenings to other locations.

Birds did use the barley field to the west of the MNVWR Headquarters but that is a long ways away and viewing not very favorable. During mid day, there were 4 to 6,000 birds at the east side Hwy 15 turnout, so that went well.

I really like the new hours that were approved recently. Now us photographers can get into the refuge a little earlier to scout out birds, clouds, winds and potential photographs.

Farewell to our friends until fall. Time to shift the focus to upland birds!

Visitors:
Deb Bogar, Gary Rossmiller, Barbara Bank, Debbie James, and Ed Imatani observed today. Gary and I usually count on different days so it was great to meet him and bird with him today.

Weather:
Heavy fog for the first few hours of the morning, lifting in the early afternoon to reveal scatted rainstorms around us. Winds were light until early afternoon, shifting from E to N throughout the day. Wind picked up to about 27 km/h at points in the late afternoon. Storm clouds moved into our area at 1430, ending the count early.

Raptor Observations:
Migration was slow today but local raptor activity was high and exciting. One local PEFA was seen, as well as one TUVU, three GOEA, and one COHA. One migrating juvenile RTHA gave us great looks early in the day.

Non-raptor Observations:
Passerine activity was low today. Corvid activity was also slightly lower than normal today, with only 6 American Crows and 3 Common Ravens seen all day.

Predictions:
Tomorrow should be a relatively good day. SW/SE winds predicted with some cloud cover and warmer temperatures than today. The trail may be muddy in the morning, but it should hopefully be dry by the end of the day.

The AMWIs do love that pond, so I will check there again tomorrow and see if our Eurasian visitor comes back. Hi all

We are moving to Vermont and our house in Nunn will be listed in next weeks. We expect a quick sale in this "hot" market. I wish I can personally thank many of you for your generosity and enthusiasm about birding. I enjoyed everyone of you who attended any trips I led up here and down in Colorado Springs-area. I appreciated bumping into birders in the field and learning something new about birding, life and yourself. I really enjoyed "passerbyers" and pointing out birds to them and seeing the light "turn on" for birding.

Ten things I'll miss about Colorado
  • Pawnee National Grassland--growing up in the most dense state in America (NJ) Colorado taught me to truly appreciated and embrace living on the prairie
  • Love the Colorado concert scene-especially at Red Rocks
  • Beautiful weather
  • Diversity of birds--who knew gulls existed outside a beach
  • Scenic drives in the mountains
  • Fort Collins
  • "Hiding" the last ten years of my Air Force career at the magnificent U. S. Air Force Academy
  • Conservation-minded citizenry
  • Pikes Peak-in the middle of an Air Force tour in South Korea I received a phone call saying my next assignment was the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. My initial "Joisey" reaction was "what the heck is in Colorado?" (thinking wild west, wagon wheels, etc ;-) ) When I stepped off the plane in Colorado Springs and saw Pikes Peak I said to myself (and others) "I don't have to go back to Jersey any more"
  • Plant-based protein culture and availability
Ten things we love about Vermont
  • Did I mention GREEN? We visited last July, everywhere we went (and we traveled the entire state) was GREEN, GREEN and more GREEN
  • Billboards are illegal
  • Mandatory recycle
  • Maple syrup (diners and bakeries!)
  • Montpelier is the only state capital without a McDonald's
  • Vermont does not have any skyscraper. Vermont is the only state that does not have any buildings taller than 124 feet
  • Covered bridges
  • Farm stands (pay-as-you-go, free, pay-what you can) everywhere
  • Second smallest state by population
  • Vermont became the last state to get a Walmart store
I'll miss the Colorado birding community! Until we meet again ...

Re: [cobirds] Thank You and Almost Goodbye Colorado Birders

Good luck and have fun in Vermont! Will someone be taking over the Friends of Pawnee website?
