[cobirds] Denver Urban CBC

With the daunting weather prediction, I've postponed the Denver Urban CBC from Jan. 1 to Wednesday, Jan. 5.  This, of course, means many counters can't participate because of work.

Any of you who would like to participate on Wednesday and who haven't signed up should let me know. I think you can still register on the Audubon website; the trouble - some of those leaders can't do their areas. So go ahead and contact me. (You will still have to go the Audubon website to execute a Liability Waiver.

[cobirds] Glaucous-winged Gull, Pueblo Reservoir

Hi all,

Edward Landi and I have been looking at a 2nd cycle Glaucous-winged Gull here at Pueblo Reservoir's South Shore Marina. It's been flying around aggressively chasing other gulls and occasionally landing briefly. Look for a massive gull with pale uncontrasting wingtips and a smudgy black bill. Pale and off-white overall.

Other cool birds here include a first cycle Nelson's Gull (Glaucous x Herring Gull hybrid), the resident Great Black-backed Gull, and more common gulls of other flavors. Also Pacific and Common Loons, and resumably a Red-throated Loon still around somewhere.

Good birding,

[cobirds] 40 acres of Burrowing Owl land, Weld County

I just found out some very sad news. There is a 40 acre plot of land outside of Keenesburg in Weld County where I watch burrowing owls every year. A developer bought the land, and is selling 6-8 acre size lots. When I called the realtor, she informed me that if I buy a plot, I'm required to build on it. Also, the price on the website was wrong...it was actually DOUBLE that. Hey, even if I wanted a six acre home, that is about the ugliest place ever; I'd never spend that much for land. There are GIANT power lines running the whole south side of the 40 acres.
I am guessing since Burrowing Owls are not protected (many of us remember when they were building DIA; the owls lost) that the owls will have to (hopefully) find a new spot. I'll miss "my" owls l.
I just had to share my sadness with people who would understand.
Thank you,
Susan Rosine

[cobirds] Spotted Sandpiper, Arapahoe County

Today I went for a short walk at Centennial Park, I start at the far east end and survey the Platte River. There I meet Lynda who told me she saw a different looking shorebird. I saw it at the same time, pure white belly, dull brown above and a small faint eye ring. It was bobbing as it feed along the shoreline. I believed it to be a Solitary Sandpiper, but looking things over more I believe it's a Spotted Sandpiper, both are odd this time of year.
We saw the bird along the South Platte across from the Englewood Water treatment, downstream of the Union blvd overpass. It was bellow the spillway that is part of the water treatment plant. There is a parking lot next to the far eastern ball field in the park. From there just cross the Platte river trail, the spillway is right there.
Happy New year

[cobirds] Joe Roller Memorial Green Big Year update!

All,
It's been a busy few weeks, but I've finally gotten some blog posts up about the most recent adventures and the unexpected December birds. With three days left in the year and iffy forecasts, I'm guessing I won't be finding any more birds, which may be a relief to some of you!

It's never too late to make a per species pledge or a tax-deductible flat donation to the Joe Roller Memorial Grant. We've eclipsed $37,000 with donations and pledges to date! This far exceeds my modest expectations for this endeavor. If we can raise $40,000, we will likely be able to invest the funds and support a research grant annually just off of the interest, in perpetuity (or pretty darned close). This is pretty amazing! Thank you for all the support! What a way to honor Joe and support important bird research in Colorado!

Scroll to the bottom of the link to pledge or donate.

Cheat sheet totals update:
Green Big Year species list: 284 (as of Dec 27)
Miles ridden: 3103 (as of Dec 27)
Elevation gain in 2021: 128,000 ft
# of trips to Chatfield State Park: 45
2021 Joe Roller Memorial Green Big Year Species List

Blog posts:
Cynthia's Wood Thrush!!

Black-and-white Warbler for #282 and a new Colorado Green year record. Here's to Thomas Heinrich!

I rode to Aurora Reservoir for a Red-necked Grebe. I hope that grebe appreciates that 72 mile ride!

The last new Green Big Year bird? Trumpeter Swan #284!

Hopefully over the next couple months I'll compile more stories and adventures from this year. There are so many untold trips, birds, challenges, and fun times.

Thank you all.

[cobirds] Conifer, Fire & Birds

Hi

Over the millennia in our temperate western forests, conifers and fire have a long, symbiotic relationship.

When unimpeded by fire, the forest grows  proportionally beyond its sustainability for maintaining balanced, healthy habitat. Aggressive conifers will start invading undesirable habitat and become weak and more susceptible to disease and unwanted visits from opportunistic, noxious insects. A lighting strike ignites a  spark and the deteriorating conifers will start to burn. Eventually when there is less wood to burn fire will gradually reach an equilibrium with conifers.

Centuries ago when Europeans arrived the intricate balance of conifer and fire dramatically changed. Fire became the villain and suppression of fire became the over whelming goal. Even today the national forest's policy is geared towards  suppressing fire. As a result conifers have enjoyed an explosion of growth, substantially increasing the volume of wood as potential combustible  fuel. The unusual intensity of heat brought on by global warming further escalated the furnace effect, sucking out what little moisture was left in the soil. This has been disastrous for survival of small mammals and birds. The unusual die-off of thousands of birds recorded recently in the southwestern region is attributed, in part, to the current imbalance of conifer and fire. Also, many birds perished as a result of the poisons gasses emitted by the fire.

This short post is adapted from a blog from the Bird Conservancy by David McNitt Modern Wild Fires.

[cobirds] Western Bluebird, Sawhill Ponds, Boulder County

CObirders,
On a very cold morning at 9:30 today, I found a "drab adult" female Western Bluebird near Pond 3.  It was with a small flock of robins eating berries in the area. I was standing on the road that heads west from the parking lot looking north when I photographed her.

Another unusual sighting was a male Hairy Woodpecker.

Back on 12/14, Steve Barlow found a Black and White Warbler 400 meters west of I-70 along Clear Creek. Then, as I was scouting for the North Jeffco CBC, I found a Black and White Warbler at the west parking lot just east of I-70. A friend of mine was looking along with several other birders west of I-70 when I told him I had a Black and White east of I-70 and they were able to see it as well.

On 12/19, I was on my CBC and found the Black and White Warbler about 300-400 yards west of I-70. I spoke with a couple of fellow birders who stated they just had it east of 1-70 lot again. What?????  This didn't make sense!! This warbler I found had a much more striking appearance than the one I had days earlier. I ran into another birder who just had it to the east of I-70 and I mentioned I had it a great distance from where everyone else was reporting it that morning. I stated if it was possible there were two. The first three photos are of the bird east of i-70 on the 14th and the second four are the bird well west of I-70 on the 19th.  What do you think???? I know what I think :)

[cobirds] carpooling to Rawhide CBC tomorrow, Dec 26?

Dear folks, if anyone who has already pre-registered with compiler Douglas Kibbe for the Rawhide CBC is interested in carpooling, please contact me, email or phone/text.  I will be driving from Niwot, going through Longmont and up through Fort Collins.  Doug suggested a place to meet in Fort Collins.  I am just hoping to not drive unnecessarily, as some of the CBCs I am doing involve a lot of driving already.  Thanks!

[cobirds] Greater White-Fronted Goose

Good Afternoon!

While checking out the pond near Cherry Knolls Park in Centennial I came across a Greater White-fronted Goose amongst dozens of Cackling Geese. Also a pair of Northern Pintail Ducks.

In case anyone is out enjoying the gorgeous holiday weather!

Regards,
Jennifer

[cobirds] Aurora Reservoir, Arapahoe County

Today I made the drive all the way out to Aurora Reservoir. I first stopped at the swim beach and had the misfortune to be contending with the sun. The lake was also unfrozen leading to a lot of water to search. The sun glare was so bad I wound up moving over to the east parking lot. I met Jim (did not get a last name) at the fishing dock and two other birds (didn't get their names) before moving over to the east parking lot and Jim followed me over. There we we meet Diann Roberts. Diann got use on tow Rose's Goose and a Snow Goose, one each. Also present was a white Cackling Goose, likely leucistic, amid the thousands of Cackling Gees. I had not yet found the Red Necked Grebe or any of the loons so I moved back to the swim beach hoping the sun glare was not as bad.
I was in luck and it was not so bad. Diann had also moved back to this spot and was able to help me find the two Common Loons along with the Red-necked Grebe (which was near a Western Grebe) and two White Winged Scooters. I never did find the Pacific Loon.
The Red-necked Grebe was exiting for me. I had been in south Texas recently where I saw Least Grebes. With the Red-necked Grebe I have now see every North American nesting grebe in on calendar year, a first for me. Thanks Diann for helping me on the grebes.

[cobirds] Two Littleton area birds - JeffCo

A rare December House Wren has been at Ken Caryl Valley, in an area of private open space along Dutch Creek. I found it with Pat Cullen on Dec 18, and it was still there on subsequent visits through yesterday Dec 23 at least.

A light morph imm. Rough-legged Hawk was circling at Kipling x C470 yesterday Dec 23. Rough-leggeds are decidedly infrequent in the Littleton area.

Perhaps a situation similar to this female Merlin feeding on a Eurasian Collared-Dove.

Agree with Tony, it looks like the results of an attack on a white pigeon by a predator like a Cooper's Hawk or a falcon (I saw something like this a few years ago when a Prairie Falcon visited my neighborhood.    All the gray pigeons it could have preyed on....but noooo....it had to eat the pretty white one.    :(

I found this patch of feathers in my yard about 3:30 this afternoon. There was one other very small patch of feathers in another spot and two small bloods spots. I am stumped.
