[cobirds] Gyrfalcon still present in Fort Collins (Larimer) on 31Jan2019

I got an email message today from Scott Baily today who lives on the west side of Fort Collins that contained a beautiful photo of a Gyrfalcon.  It almost assuredly is the same individual found late last year by Andy Bankert at the Larimer County Landfill.  The location of Scott's photo is Reservoir Ridge Natural Area, which is roughly 7 miles nnw of the landfill along the foothills.  The pole in the picture is part of a powerline that crosses the foot trail that leads west from the RRNA parking lot on Overland Trail.  This parking lot is on the west side of Overland Trail about a mile north of West Vine Drive.  I would estimate the distance from the parking lot to the powerline at about a mile.  The walking is flat.  Although I don't normally go that far west when I am visiting to see/photograph the bobolinks that nest in this area in summer, Scott tells me the powerline is just east of where the two trails come together near the metal foot bridge over the irrigation ditch.  If you go west from the parking lot, just key on the tall n-s powerline.  It is the only one straight west of the parking lot.  Scott first saw the bird at 2:30pm, went home got his camera and it was still there at 3:30.  Nice refind, Scott!

[cobirds] Bufflehead feet

SPOILER ALERT!
I took this picture at a Salt Lake City aviary. I know it isn't in Colorado and it was not out in nature but I simply couldn't get my mind off these amazing, surprising and unexpected feet of a bufflehead! I don't know how many people get an opportunity to see them and I know I never had so I just wanted to share this picture.

[cobirds] Yellow-bellied Sapsucker seen at Grandview Cemetery, Fort Collins (Larimer) on 31Jan2019

The continuing young male was seen about 2pm today in the Austrian pine that has been its favorite for the last few weeks.  This tree is in the grove of Austrian pines and spruce just out on City Park 9 golf course about midway along the cemetery's southern border road that runs east-west.  This grove is about 50 yards east of the portapotty that sits on the side of the fareway.  The double-trunked pine the sapsucker favors is just east of the big security light pole.  Its most recent patches of sap wells are about 70% up the trunk.  It is VERY wary, almost always stays on the side opposite you.  Birders get lucky when the bird responds to golfers, moves around to the opposite side from them, which is the cemetery side where we are.  I guess I'm saying find the tree, stay back in the shadows midway between the portapotty and the light pole, be patient, and hope groups of golfers come down the fareway.  Check out any bird that leaves the section of trunk described above, as the sapsucker likes to go hide in the big cottonwood with the flicker box that is east of the pine-spruce grove.  Most of the time, this bird has been silent, which definitely hampers detection.

The screech-owl seen of late north of the old stone office was not out today.

Seen soaring high over the golf course today were both an adult Bald Eagle and a juvenile Golden Eagle.

[cobirds] Harlan’s Hawk, Jeffco

Along Highway 93, just north of Table Mountain, Jefferson County, a Harlan's Hawk about 11:30 this morning.

I just found a Brant on Milevak Res. among thousands of geese. No sign of the Pink-footed or Barnacle.

Re: [cobirds] Re: RFI: Fawn Brook Inn or other feeding stations in Estes Park areA

The Boulder Bird club held their annual Mountain Feeders Field Trip last Saturday in Ward and Allenspark. We stopped at the Rock Creek Tavern & Pizza for refreshments. The owners are going to move this establishment into the old Fawnbrook and they are busy working in that direction. We enquired about bird feeders and they were non-committal at this time focusing only on their move. In the future after they are settled they may be more approachable regarding feeders. Later, maybe the birding community could pitch in to assist with this if the owners are receptive to the idea?

[cobirds] Negative report on PINK-FOOTED GOOSE in WELD CO.

Three of us spent about two hours at mid-day yesterday combing through the thousands of geese at Milavec Reservoir and were unable to find the Pink-footed Goose.  To my knowledge, it hasn't been reported since last Saturday the 26th.  With so many birds either on the reservoir or coming and going, it's very possible to have missed it.

The continuing Long-tailed Duck was present, however.

[cobirds] Trumpeter Swans Grand County

Alicia Arnold and I came across 3 Trumpeter Swans on the Blue River just south of Kremmling on Highway 9 this evening around 3 PM. They were hanging with 5 Canada Geese on the river just west of Confluence Rectreation Site. If you are heading north on highway 9 you will take a left shortly before the Colorado River. Grand County Road 1is the turn (also known as Trough Road). After taking a left off of Highway 9 you would take your first right and follow signs to the Confluence parking area and then scan to the west. This would be a first Grand County record and if you are in the the area I would love for others to snag this county tik.

Back when the Fawnbrook Inn closed, the family had said that the folks who own the nearby Rock Creek Tavern & Pizza had bought the property and were planning to develop it into a restaurant of some kind, but the expectation was they would not maintain the bird feeders, but so far nothing has happened with the property it seems.

The restaurant was owned by an older couple and the husband was getting
unable to continue working at the caliber he wanted to so they decided to
close. As far as I know, No one bought it, so it sits vacant.

[cobirds] Re: RFI: Fawn Brook Inn or other feeding stations in Estes Park areA

Maybe some wealthy birder groups could buy out the place and maintain it as a birder-friendly bed and breakfast and market it as the best place in the nation to see all 3 rosy finch species out your window while having huevos rancheros and fresh brewed coffee. Any investors?

Fawn Brook has served us well over the past decade but no longer was in operation last year.

[cobirds] Re: RFI: Fawn Brook Inn or other feeding stations in Estes Park areA

So what's up with Fawn Brook Inn lately? Went a couple years ago and we brought seed and enjoyed hundreds of rosy finches of all 3 species, some Evening Grosbeaks, etc.  Is the business still owned by bird-feeder friendly folk?  I'd be willing to drive up a few sacks of bird seed to help sustain the feeders if anyone has info on the situation up there, as it seemed to be one of the most easily accessible spots to see Rosy finches in the winter. Would be willing to donate a feeder or two as well. I have photos hanging on my wall of the tree full of 3 spp. of rosy finches at Fawn Brook - what a gem of winter birding in CO!  If it's not too late, let's keep it going. Anyone have info?

Re: [cobirds] RFI: Fawn Brook Inn or other feeding stations in Estes Park areA

I have been having a handful of Rosy-finches at my House in Estes, But
they seem to show up at different times each day. There  has been a few
Gray-crowned's and brown-caps, but no Blacks.

For those of you that know of the number of birds that I can get at my
house, these are extremely small flocks. Simply a handful at a time.

[cobirds] RFI: Fawn Brook Inn or other feeding stations in Estes Park areA

Arvind,

There are a couple of houses with feeders just west of the church. Also, if you head south on Ski road past 2nd ave there are a few houses with feeders where the road bends right then left again.

Went there New Year's Day hoping for Bohemian waxwings and struck out, no rosy finches either, but did get a good sized flock of evening grosbeaks.

Good luck,

Steve Rash
Denver Co.

[cobirds] Re: RFI: Fawn Brook Inn or other feeding stations in Estes Park areA

Feeders are not being maintained at Fawn Brook.  We saw rosy finches in the town of Ward, but I am not sure how welcoming they would be to a large group of people looking at their feeders.  The birds in JeffCO are easy but not close to where you're going.

Good Luck,

[cobirds] Re: RFI: Fawn Brook Inn or other feeding stations in Estes Park areA

No one is filling Fawn Brook's feeders this year. There are a couple feeders at a home near the beginning of Ski Road where it makes a 90 degree turn up a hill. 4 weeks ago it had Evening Grosbeaks and Clark's Nutcracker, etc.  There are also feeders at Charles Eagle Plume's Indian Store on route 7 near the turnoff for Big Owl Rd, and they get woodpeckers and finches.
