[cobirds] 3, Green-tailed Towhee,Littleton, Jefferson County,4/30

Hi birders,

What a surprise to see in my yard today not 1, but 3, Green-tailed Towhees. I get one each spring, but I've never had 3 individuals at once. WOW, they are gorgeous and two of the Green-tailed were really chasing each other with their rufous crests flared up. One Green-tailed Towhee was in my yard from 4/26 on. In addition to the above birds in the yard, I had the Spotted Towhee[they nest in my yard].On 4/30, there were 6  Gambel's White-crowned Sparrow, 1 Brewer's Sparrow singing [I get them every Spring], 8, Chipping Sparrow[most singing], and 1,Brown-headed Cowbird. I thought I was on the Tundra/treeline area this morning because of all the beautiful White-crowned singing.

On 4/26, in my yard, there were 21 Chipping Sparrows in the yard, 1,m. Lazuli Bunting, 1,Lincoln's Sparrow[and through 4/29], 3,White-crowned Sparrow.

On 4/24 1, Swainson's Thrush

4/11, Six Painted Lady Butterfly feeding on my Plum bush flowers.

Happy Birding!

[cobirds] Cottonwood Marsh (Boulder Co) ibis

The ibis I previously reported at Cottonwood Marsh is either a Glossy x White-faced Ibis hybrid or a White-faced Ibis that has not completed molt into its alternate plumage. The facial skin lacks the white fringe that is typical of White-faced Ibis. That initially threw me off as well as the birder who pointed the bird out to me.

However, the iris is red as are the legs which are indicative of White-faced. The facial skin appears gray in some photos, though it looks more pinkish in others. Gray facial skin would suggest Glossy Ibis; pink would suggest White-faced.

I'm attaching a link to the eBird report https://ebird.org/checklist/S68149914 which includes photos. I'd be interested in opinions.

[cobirds] Hooded Warbler, Barr Lake, Adams County

Hi everyone,

Daniel Maynard reported a female Hooded Warbler this morning at Barr Lake (Adams County). Riley and Heather Morris re-found the bird this afternoon close to the banding station. I also had a Virginia's Warbler this morning at Barr Lake, below the dam.

Good to see some nice warblers popping up in Adams County!

While out on a neighborhood walk today I heard two singing Grasshopper Sparrows. They were in the vicinity of 2100 and Iris Road

Last spring I heard several in Montrose County, several miles east of Olathe. Checked the Birds of Western Colorado Plateau and Mesa Country book- seems they are rare here?

[cobirds] Egret/merganser cooperative fdg Arapahoe county

I was surprised to see a snowy egret and a pair of mergansers going around the edge of the pond together in what appeared to be a cooperative feeding behavior. The video I included shows just a bit of the behavior. When I had first started watching, both species seemed to benefit from the activity.
I had to leave for an appointment and, when I came back, the mergansers were gone, egret still here.

[cobirds] Mockingbird, towhees and more in Denver City Park

It was a mem0rable Thursday morning for spring migrants in Denver City Park:

+  First record of a Northern Mockingbird in 72 years.
According to eBird, the species was last seen in the park by young Hugh Kingery on May 15, 1948, the third oldest eBird record until now for any of the 174 species seen in the the park since the 1940s.
This one briefly paused on the park road west of Duck Lake, tail pointing skyward, then flew to a small tree before disappearing over the fence into the Denver Zoo
+  Two Green-tailed Towhees, another seldom-seen visitor, one of them hanging with two White-crowned Sparrows along that same zoo fenceline
+  Spotted Towhee, an infrequent visitor
+  Three Vesper Sparrows
+  A pair of Swainson's Hawks, perched in trees at the north and south ends of the big lawn south of the Denver Museum of Nature + Science

On a personal note, I also saw my first Great Horned Owl in nearly 200 visits to City Park. It was in a spruce tree near the 21st Avenue gate, being mobbed by Black-billed Magpies and Blue Jays, with robins, flickers, finches and doves watching the action.
Finally, the park's first Double-crested Cormorant chicks of 2020 (9 in 3 nests) have hatched and are begging to be fed at the Duck Lake rookery, with more than 550 adults and 260 nests.

Good birding!

[cobirds] central Bldr Cnty: FOS Bu Oriole in my window

I looked up from sewing masks this morning to see a bright orange male peering back at me through the window. Cheerful sight!

On a local survey earlier this morning, it was good to hear prairie melodies on all sides: Horned Larks, Vesper Sparrows, meadowlarks of course, winnowing Snipe, Say's Phoebes, House Wrens, etc. Alas, no sign of those curlews & godwits that you others have been seeing in large numbers.

However, I did spot one of my goals: an uncommon (for hereabouts) Burrowing Owl eating some kind of rather large prey. I could not see what was at its feet, but after watching it do the "pull up the socks" manoeuvre multiple times, I eventually realized it was tearing apart something bigger than a bug!

[cobirds] CFO Website Has A New Look!

Hi everyone,
You may have noticed that the CFO website has been completely redesigned and reorganized! The changes will help to make our content easier to access on mobile devices and better reflect the benefits that CFO provides its members as well as the public.

Here are a few highlights:
  • Headlines Block - contains the latest news from CFO about programs, field trips, important dates and more.
  • CFO Membership Block - provides easy access to all member benefits, information about upcoming events, field trip registration and volunteer opportunities.
  • NEW Colorado Birding Block - this new section includes resources for county birding, access to the CFO ID Quiz archives, information about other birding organizations throughout Colorado and other helpful links.
  • eBird Rare Birds Report - check the footer at the bottom of the homepage for up-to-the-minute sightings of rare birds statewide.
This has been a big project and CFO is grateful for the time and effort invested by all its volunteer board members and especially to Ann Johnson of AJ Endeavors, whose patience and expertise were on full display from start to finish! We hope that you will take a few minutes to explore https://cobirds.org/ and you can always use the form at the bottom of the homepage to ask questions or provide feedback.

[cobirds] COLORADO RARE BIRD REPORT FOR THURSDAY, APRIL 30, posted 6 AM Thurs.

Date: Thursday, April 30 2020

Email: RBA  AT cobirds.org

Compiler: Laura Steadman lauramsteadman @ gmail <dot> com

_________________________________________

The Colorado Rare Bird Report is an informational service.

Because of statewide coronavirus "Stay at Home" and "Safer at Home" orders (depending on where you live), the purpose of this report is to keep homebound readers abreast of rare bird sightings across the state during spring migration. It does NOT endorse or encourage illegal travel to see or "chase" rare birds beyond your own permitted area.

We urge readers to respect state and local restrictions on non-critical travel and limits on outdoor activities that include birding. Please bird ONLY at or close to home and ONLY with universally promoted safety precautions, including "social distancing" and face coverings. Or, as Dave Leatherman noted, "Be like a Cedar Waxwing . . . very compliant in wearing their masks."

_______________________________________

Birders have been helpful by reporting updates to COBirds. Thanks!

CAPITAL LETTERS denote very rare species, as listed by the Colorado Bird Records Committee at the CFO website.

(*) indicates new information on a species.

For more information on birds seen today, go to cobirds.org and scroll to the bottom for "Recent eBird Sightings."

_______________________________________

Spring migration notes:

Shorebirds are passing through, with 23+ species reported to eBird recently, including multiple Whimbrel sightings, large flocks of curlews and godwits. It's Caspian Tern time too. Reports of Gray Flycatchers and Black Phoebes were widespread. Some Cassin's Finches continue to be reported, but fewer than last week. Hummingbirds are starting to show at feeders.  Sparrows and longspurs continue to move through. Warblers are arriving!!!! Migration really picked up yesterday, with both returning Colorado breeders and "overshoots" from the southeast like Louisiana Waterthrush, Yellow-throated, Hooded, Black-throated Green Warblers, and Northern Parulas. Highly prized "Eastern" warblers are flowing into SE Colorado, and soon we'll find them farther north. Exciting!

What's in your yard or near your home?  Let us know on COBirds.

[cobirds] Northern Parula at Fort Collins City Park on 4/29/20

A Northern Parula male was catching midges from bushes and small trees on the north side of Sheldon Lake in Fort Collins City Park from at least 9am thru noon.  I am guessing it will stick in the area at least until tonight.  There is a boardwalk that skirts the south end of the swimming pool complex.  The bird was in vegetation between this boardwalk and the lake shore just east of the swimming pool complex (another way to say it is "along the boardwalk north of the boat ramp").  It's favorite haunt was a leafless willow about 20 feet tall about 30 yards east of the white building where swimming pool patrons pay (when the pool is open).  Also present were a few orange-crowns and yellow-rumps.  Northern Parula was both chipping and singing (mostly the former).  The bird was seen by at least 4 other birders who tried for it.

Migrants seen today at nearby Grandview Cemetery included FOY House Wren (just n of 7-11 across street from nw corner of cemetery), Broad-tailed Hummingbird (heard), Violet-green Swallows (high in the sky), Spotted Towhee (southeastern corner under cotoneaster n of the pump house), Ruby-crowned Kinglet (se corner), Orange-crowned Warblers (2 in cotoneaster shrubs), Chipping Sparrows (big flock midway along the south boundary road) and Yellow-rumped Warblers (few in flowering cottonwoods).  Lots of waxwings continue in the cottonwoods.

[cobirds] Great Egret, Willet and others near Lowell Blvd. Adams County

Hi CoBirders
A Great Egret was at Lowell Pond today and yesterday. I saw it at the pond that is south of the Clear Creek bike path, east of Lowell Blvd. This is Adams Cty. This morning a Willet and a Spotted Sandpiper were along Clear Creek west of the Lowell bridge. The American Dipper is still foraging and visiting a nest site east of the bridge.

[cobirds] Willets, Whimbrels and Warblers at Union & Jim Hamm, Boulder/Weld CO.

Got to Union Res. early (6:20 am) and was rewarded with 20 Whimbrels on the north shore, roosting with 5 Forester's Terns.  Got there just in time as the Whimbrels flew north at 6:37 am.  100 yds further east were 11 Willets being very vocal.    Checklist with some poor pics here:  https://ebird.org/checklist/S68023179.   Probably 95% fewer ducks than yesterday.

Went over to Jim Hamm and had 7 YRWA's, mixture of both kinds.  Of course I left my camera behind, but mixed in with the YRWA's was a female Blackpoll warbler. Had to dig out Sibey's when I got home as I originally had no clue.  Similar sized, but white eye arcs above/below eye with a thin black stripe through the eye, orange legs and a mostly white breast with black/darkish streaks on the periphery.   Went back at 10 am and of course had no luck finding it again.

[cobirds] Black Phoebe at Home Lake

Things birdwise are a little slower here at a mile and a half elevation, but things are finally picking up here in the San Luis Valley. Our first wave of warblers is just arriving as the trees are budding and the insect life has increased. Yellow-rumped and Orange-crowned warblers were nice to see.

At Home Lake, water is being pumped into the lake, which is eliminating the mudflats that have been so great for shorebirds. As waters rose, the shorebirds were pushed closer to the road surrounding the lake. Thirty LB Dowitchers, 28 least Sandpipers, 2 Lesser Yellowlegs and 1 Semipalmated Plover made the highlight reel.

The Black Phoebe was catching insects on the NE edge of the canal where there is a headgate water structure (Rio Grande County).  (For those who recall, this is the Cerulean Warbler site from a long ago CFO Convention). Last year on May 5th, we had Black Phoebe here as well.

We are really dry here and have not had any significant precipitation for some time. I remain envious of the nice wet spring snows you get on the other side of the hill. Stay well all.

[cobirds] Re: More Spring Arrivals/Weld

A very nice Forest Service officer (I think, I didn't note the logo) told me I shouldn't be in there, and that he was choosing not to write me a ticket, on Sunday. I don't recommend walking into the Crow Valley Campground until the signs aren't posted on the gate.

Other notes: Crow Valley Campground closed for the season gated and signed-I'm asking our Forest if birders are still allowed to enter. Very large flooded field Hwy 392/Weld CR 63 on N (ducks so far).

Also, the Greeley Mute Swan pair, there is a photo I took on F Street, "nesting or resting"? Sure looks like a nest.

[cobirds] Cedar Waxwing flocks-Aurora/Arapahoe County. AMGO courtship behavior

Flocks of Cedar Waxwings (30-50 birds at a time, and a new yard bird for me) have been at my water fountains for the past three days. Not sure if others at lower elevations are also seeing them, but I wonder if it's related to "winter burn" in damaged pine and spruce trees elsewhere?

Other new yard birds are a Green-tailed Towhee And a Great-tailed Grackle this AM. They headed towards Horseshoe Park. I get trees full of Common Grackles, but this was the first Great-tailed Grackle.

Interesting "courtship" behavior with a male American Goldfinch. He bullies the grackles away, stands on top of a large water fountain and waits for females. Thus far I have observed up to six different females come in shortly thereafter. Seems today it's down to one female…..he chases the others away and lets the one have a drink.

Good birding,

[cobirds] Northern Parula - Dixon Reservoir (LARIMER)

Brad Biggerstaff found a Northern Parula yesterday and it continues today. Brad and I saw it from The dam at the north end of the reservoir in the trees and brush north of the Dam, more toward the east end of the dam.

[cobirds] Denver Sparrows, Denver Co.

Just wanted to drop a line to remind folks to keep an eye out in their yards as stuff is really to starting to move through.  We've had a fun couple of days (28-29 Apr.'20) with sparrows at our place in southwest Denver (Huston Park area, Denver Co.).  Nothing rare, but a nice adult, first-of-season "Gamble's" WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW and surprise GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE this morning were fun and added to the new Yard Bird excitement yesterday when a LINCOLN'S SPARROW made a brief showing.  CHIPPING SPARROWs have been increasing the past few days, and our territorial male SPOTTED TOWHEE round out the family - last had a single junco ("Pink-sided" flavor) about a week ago.

So again, it is that time of the year when truly anything can show up, so keep your eyes peeled while stuck at the house.

Good Birding,
Doug Ward

[cobirds] COLORADO RARE BIRD REPORT FOR WEDNESDAY, APRIL 29, posted at 10 PM, Tuesday.

Or, as Dave Leatherman noted this week, "Be like a Cedar Waxwing . . . very compliant in wearing their masks."

Warbler migration is picking up, with both returning Colorado breeders and

"overshoots" from the southeast like Louisiana Waterthrush, Yellow-throated and Hooded Warblers. Highly prized "Eastern" warblers are flowing into SE Colorado, and soon we'll find them farther north. Exciting!

What's in your yard or near your home?  Let us know on COBirds.
