[cobirds] Re: Could it be a Mexican yellow grosbeak in Durango, Colorado?

That would be exceptionally rare and a first state record, but Yellow Grosbeak (and other south-of-the-border specialties) are theoretically possible in Durango. Please link to your photos or send them out.

[cobirds] California Condor N1, Black Forest, El Paso County

Hi all,
I thought you'd be interested to know that the Ellicott Wildlife Rehabilitation Center has reported that they collected California Condor N1 found in Black Forest today.  Their FB page has a photo of the bird:  https://www.facebook.com/pages/Ellicott-Wildlife-Rehabilitation-Center/127122680754  If this is indeed Condor N1, it was born in Boise, ID in 2014 at a Peregrine Fund captive breeding program and released last September.  I don't have any personal knowledge about this - I don't know if it is suffering from injury or lead poisoning or what -  but thought it interesting enough to share.

[cobirds] Gray Flycatcher, Clear Spgs Ranch, El Paso Co

Hi COBirders,

After hearing of all the migrants still moving, I decided to re-open banding for a few days at CSR to see what might show up. (I had been in Arizona for a week - Tufted Flycatcher and Flame-colored Tanagers!!!)

Mostly it seemed that I was catching birds today that are, or soon will be, nesting here, but there were a few migrants banded, like Warbling Vireo, Swainson's Thrush, and a second-year Gray Flycatcher.
Other banded birds:
Red-winged Blackbird
Yellow Warbler 2, plus two recaptures banded 5/14
House Wren 2 recaps
Com Yellowthroat 3, plus 2 recaps
Yellow-breasted Chat

I plan to be open for a few more days this week, but will likely close again by next weekend.

Also, in my backyard migrant trap (Mountain Shadows) yesterday I had Plumbeous Vireo, Wilson's Warbler, Green-tailed Towhee, and a pair of Bullock's Orioles.

Good birding

[cobirds] RMBO Chatfield Banding Report, 5/31/15

The weather cooperated for one final pleasant day of banding at Chatfield.  We finished the season with 26 new birds and an interesting range of species:

Red-shafted Flicker 1
House Wren 2
Swainson's Thrush 1
Gray Catbird 3
Cedar Waxwing 6
Yellow Warbler 6
Common Yellowthroat 1
Yellow-breasted Chat 2
Lincoln's Sparrow 1
Lazuli Bunting 1
Bullock's Oriole 2

For the season, we banded 542 birds, plus we had 46 returns (birds banded in prior years at this station) for a total of 588 birds of 49 species.  That is slightly better than our average for the 11 years we have been at this location, and not bad considering the number of days we were rained out completely plus the number of cold dreary days when numbers were very low. The last 10 days were perfect for banding, and we all - staff, volunteers, students, visitors, birds - had a chance to enjoy some lovely spring weather.

For fall, we will as usual be at Barr Lake.  Our plan will be to open the last weekend on August, but that of course will depend on water levels.......  Check the RMBO website (www.rmbo.org) for details.

[cobirds] Red Crossbill - Custer County

COBirders,

Saturday morning at our cabin in NW Custer County we had a short visit from one (only!) Red Crossbill.  It was a type 5, I think, and did not vocalize.  It’s dull but fresh red plumage showed it to be a male.  First crossbill we’ve seen there in maybe two decades.  Since we are absent a good part of the time in cold weather there might have been many visits we missed, however one would think that we would have seen a few during that time.

[cobirds] Eastern Phoebe, Chatfield State Park, 5/31/15

I found an Eastern Phoebe by Kingfisher Bridge in Chatfield State Park today at 5:20AM. It perched on a post by the side of the road on the east side of the bridge, and it even sang for a few minutes.

Cheers,

[cobirds] Bell's Vireo -- Pueblo Co. 5/31 (day 7)

The singing Bell's Vireo that I found last Sunday, is still present east of Valco Ponds #3 (and west of the Valco Bridge) in Pueblo, east of Pueblo Reservoir dam, along Highway 96.  It probably sings all day long, as it was still singing at 12:45pm today, when it was very warm (they sing all day in the summer in Kansas too).  I know of at least five or six birders that were able to see/hear it today.  I don't know how often I'll be getting over to this location in June/July (this summer), so if anyone does go there, please let me know if it is still present or not.  It would be nice to know how long it sticks around.

The location as posted before, is to walk to the last Valco Pond (Valco Pond #3 in my opinion), and listen for it on the south side of the trail, before you each the Valco Bridge.  So, from Valco Ponds parking lot, walk between Valco Pond #1 (the by Hwy 96) and Valco Pond #2 (the one closer to the River), and continue past the 3rd pond.  It is a closer walk from the Osprey Picnic Area, though some people don't know that way.

There really weren't any non-breeding land birds in Rock Canyon/Valco Ponds today, except for a Swainson's Thrush or two.  There was a Green Heron, a Black-crowned Night-Heron, and some flyover White-faced Ibis that were seen this morning.

Have a good summer everyone!

[cobirds] Huerfano County Update: Scissor-tailed Flycatcher and Bobolinks

Decided to drive out County Road 358 for a short distance while Paul was in town with a client. Was very surprised to find a Scissor-tailed Flycatcher sitting on a barbed wire fence! I had recognized it for what it was and was just creeping a little closer when I saw a truck coming, fearing the bird would fly I took two quick id shots. The bird did fly as the truck passed. I did a quick u-turn and pursued. After quite a bit of looking I spotted it far down in a cow pasture. Had to view through a spotting scope to clearly see it.
I returned to our house to pick up Paul and we tried for an hour to re-locate it. While searching for the Scissor-tailed I heard a Bobolinks calling. I turned around and there was a male Bobolink directly behind the car! We drove out 358 for a short distance trying again for the Scissor-tailed and were treated to several Bobolink males displaying. We witnessed courtship flights between males and females. This field used to be planted with alfalfa and cut more than once a season. They have since let it go to natural grass and it is now only cut once a season. This appears to be another breeding location for the county, and they are easier to spot here than at the location on County Road 360!

We did finally re-locate the Scissor-tailed...again far down in a cow pasture and had good spotting scope views.  Have posted the one decent ID photo to CFO Facebook page.

We did file a report with CBRC as Scissor-tailed does not appear on the Huerfano County checklist. I did request it be added, but felt that documentation should be submitted.

[cobirds] RMBO Chatfield Banding Report, 5/30/15

The Cedar Waxwings arrived yesterday - a big flock came into the station area as we were finishing closing the nets.  One actually perched briefly on the top trammel of the last open net as we arrived to close it, did the bird equivalent of thumbing his nose at us, and took off.  Today we managed to catch 2 of the lovely creatures; hoping for a few more tomorrow on our closing day!

Here's the breakdown for the 29 new captures today. The numbers continue to be solid for the last week in May:

Western Wood-pewee 2
Western Flycatcher 1
Dusky Flycatcher 1
Black-capped Chickadee 1
House Wren 2
Swainson's Thrush 4
Gray Catbird 2
Cedar Waxwing 2
Yellow Warbler 5
Wilson's Warbler 4
Song Sparrow 1
Mountain White-crowned Sparrow 2
Bullock's Oriole 1
American Goldfinch 1

Tomorrow is the last day of spring banding at Chatfield!

Re: [cobirds] Ovenbirds - more from Ken Caryl Ranch Open Space JeffCo

Coincidentally I birded areas in Ken Caryl Ranch on May 29-30 and counted Ovenbirds, although my effort was not focused on that species, and I walked trails or cross-country and did not sample point counts. I visited much (but not all) of the suitable and reasonably accessible habitat in the Massey Draw watershed. My total was 33 Ovenbirds, all singing. There were some areas where I had Ovenbirds in 2014 that I did not visit on these dates.

Also, on 5/29 a Magnolia Warbler and a Northern Waterthrush were at or near Massey Draw beside my home. A Least Flycatcher there was away from the species' usual haunts.

As has been noted by David Suddjian in his Post on 7-12-14 regarding Ovenbirds at the Ken Caryl Ranch Open Space (also private and restricted to residents), and my article on Ovenbirds at Willow Springs in the Oct., 2009, CFO Journal, Ovenbirds in the area from Hwy 285 to Deer Creek Canyon area along the Front Range are fairly common in the appropriate habitat.  They are found at elevations ranging from 6500- 7400 feet along drainages that flow east from the first main ridge of the Front Range. Some years the drainages are dry by June, but this year they are running full. Good thick understory seems to be the prime component of the habitat,  Forests on north facing slopes are mixed conifer with some combination of Douglas-fir, Ponderosa Pine, and aspen, while south facing slopes are typically Ponderosa Pine woodlands with Gambel Oak understory.

This year our numbers were down with 28 singing Ovenbirds recorded compared to 33 last year.  Records for previous years:
2008 - 2011  23 singing Ovenbirds were the high recorded.
2012 - 24 singing Ovenbirds
2013 - 32
2014 - 33
2015 - 28 singing Ovenbirds.

Other notes:
Michael Kiessig has 3 singing Ovenbirds on his property (off S. Deer Creek Road) this year, the same as last year.

We cleaned out some nest boxes in a meadow above Weaver Gulch Thursday on our way out, and Friday there were 3 Tree Swallows flying around in the area investigating the boxes.

[cobirds] Gun Barrel Hill to Teller Farms, Boulder County, May 30

Hello, Birders.

Lots of birds this sunny Saturday morning, May 30, along the generally north-to-south transect from Gun Barrel Hill to Teller Farms, Boulder County, including:

2 black-chinned hummingbirds and 1 gray flycatcher in an intriguing patch of scrubby, rocky habitat near the southeast corner of Gun Barrel Hill. Looked like something out of Southeast Colorado. Thought I heard a distant canyon towhee in there, too, but hard to hear over all the spotted towhees.

1 orchard oriole and a territorial willow flycatcher near Boulder Creek. Audio of the song of the flycatcher: http://www.xeno-canto.org/246747

1 singing Brewer sparrow and 3 grasshopper sparrows near the southeast corner of Gun Barrel Hill. Audio of the grappers: http://www.xeno-canto.org/246743 and http://www.xeno-canto.org/246744

bobolinks and 1 savannah sparrow in the wet hayfields south of Teller Lake No. 5. Audio of the sparrow: http://www.xeno-canto.org/246745

2 territorial eastern warbling vireos. Audio: http://www.xeno-canto.org/246741 and http://www.xeno-canto.org/246742

singing blue grosbeaks and displaying Wilson snipes widely scattered

as to migrants, a weakly singing western tanager and a lustily singing Swainson thrush, both near Teller Lake No. 5

Western meadowlarks galore. In this recording, you can hear four vocalization types: http://www.xeno-canto.org/246746

In the totally random department, a Franklin gull flying past.

Here's the eBird checklist: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S23707057

[cobirds] landbirds at Golden Ponds, Longmont (Boulder) 5/30

Hi Everyone—

This morning 5/30 I got up early and walked around Golden Ponds in Longmont. I walked in by the dirt trail. Once I got to the St Vrain, I immediately heard two Red-eyed Vireos singing. It took some patience to see them high up in the cottonwoods. Western Tanagers and Western Wood-Pewees were present, although in numbers lower than I’ve seen in past years by now. There are baby robins out already. I had but one Swainson’s Thrush, and it didn’t vocalize. On my way out, I took the paved trail. I stopped for an Eastern Kingbird and then heard an interesting song behind me. It revealed itself to be a Tennessee Warbler singing the first half of its song (the really sharp chippy part, not the trill at the end). I spent some time watching a Blue Jay pecking open leaf galls to get to the worms inside. The more you look, the more you see.

[cobirds] Elbert County May 25-26

May 25

I focused on the big pine forest block near Elizabeth, and then areas to the south along the west edge of the county down toward Elbert and south of town. Among the things of special interest were Cassin's Finches at 5 stops in the forst NE of Elizabeth, including a female building a nest in a ponderosa pine off CR 146. The species was not noted from several spots where they had been regular since last winter. A male Black-chinned Hummingbird along Forest Trail was good for Elbert, I think. A pair of Bushtits was at Pheasant Run (no pheasants). White-throated Swifts were noted along CR 114 and CR 13 south of Elizabeth, also good for Elbert. A Gray Flycatcher was along CR 106 near CR 13 in an interesting area of juniper woodland. Southeast of the town of Elbert a Prairie Falcon came wailing along a rocky pine hillside, but do they nest in Elbert? Suitable cliffs seem lacking, but I certainly am not sure.. Otherwise a moderate smattering of migrants, good numbers of Yellow Warblers, Plumbeous Vireos fairly common, and some Yellow-breasted Chats. Lots of ponds, but hardly anything in them.

May 26

This day I focused on the central county area generally along and between Highways 86 and 24, and up near Agate. I encountered some very sketchy dirt roads, and barely made it out from one section, where the goal of driving forward was accomplished with my car mostly turned sideways on the road. I'm still not sure how I was doing that...and I don't want to do it again.

There are ponds everywhere, dozens and dozens of them. But not many had birds. The best for birds was the second large pond encountered along Hwy 86 as one heads east of Kiowa, Ball Reservoir at Agate, and a pond along CR 149 north of Matheson. Ducks were thin in most places, with Blue-winged Teal being most frequently encountered. Ball Reservoir had the most variety, including Lesser Scaup and Redheads. Shorebirds were few. A highlight was 3 Stilt Sandpipers along CR 169. A Mountain Plover was NW of Simla.

Some passerine highlights in no special order: Alder Flycatcher (Middle Bijou Creek at CR 117), Eastern Phoebe (CR 98 at East Bijou), Yellow-billed Cuckoo (Big Sandy west of Simla), Black-and-white Warbler, Magnoila Warbler (Agate), Northern Waterthrush, 2 Tennessee Warblers (East Bijou at CR 170), Baltimore Oriole (Big Sandy near Simla), Orchard Oriole (several), Rose-breasted Grosbeak, and several Indigo Buntings. Blue Grosbeaks were plentiful.

[cobirds] Chatfield State Park Red-Eyed Vireos 5/29/15

Hello,

While kayaking the flooded forest of Plum Creek, in Chatfield State Park today, I found two singing Red-Eyed Vireos. The first was on the northeast corner of the Plum Creek Picnic Area, and the other was about 200 meters northeast of that in the forest. You could probably hear them singing if you walked up to the water's edge.

Interesting how many birds are still very abundant even where the water completely covers the understory. I found a nesting pair of House Wrens. I didn't find any Chats or Towhees over the deep water, as I expected. I did not find any Song Sparrows...

Cheers,

Francis Commercon, Douglas County, CO.

[cobirds] Allenspark Band-tailed Pigeons

Visited Allenspark this morning. In addition to a substantial portion of the Colorado Broad-tailed Hummingbird population, there were a few lingering Brown-capped Rosy-finches and a nice flock of Red Crossbills. Highlights, however, were four Band-tailed Pigeons in the town and a pair of Cordilleran Flycatchers by the Fawn Brook Inn pond.

Re: [cobirds] A quiz

Was that article written on April 1st?

If someone was actually serious about revising spellings to the most common misspelling,
that person should be tarrred and featherd and wridden out of tone on a Virginies Rale.

Any of us can make a typo or a slip of the mouse. She was using a world
list.
Sue is an experienced and keen birder and entered a lot of valuable data
today from many places,
as she birded around Chaffee and Saguache Counties.

She will fix the entry tonight.

Which of the following is the correct spelling of a CO bird named after a professor of English at Edinburgh University in Scotland, who was also a naturalist, and who helped none other than John James Audubon with his writing?

a) MaGillvray's

b) McGillivray's

c) MacGillivary's

d) MacGillivray's

e) McGillvrey's

f) MacGillavrey's

g) MacGillvray's

Hint: the bird was named (by Audubon) after William MacGillivray. Maybe Bob Righter will be kind enough to tell us more about this interesting man, who certainly deserves us getting his name right, in a future piece for "Colorado Birds". I hope so.

I got this information in an email from the Colorado Birding Society today:

I just called the Forest Service for Pawnee National Grasslands. Crow
Valley Campground is closed to all activity. The Local Sheriff has issued
several tickets to people going on the property. Conditions are expected
to not change at least through the middle of next week.

Good birding, elsewhere.

I was there last week and saw the sign on the gate. It made no exceptions
for entry of birders.

There were exciting birds about everywhere this morning as temps were warmer and insect life more active.

Monte Vista Refuge (Rio Grande County): Lark Bunting....first of the season.

Pike's Stockade: (Conejos County): Eastern Kingbird....they breed here every year lately
Willow Flycatcher
(no W-eyed Vireo but you'd need hip boots to find that one)

Alamosa Golf Course : Cougar Woods (Alamosa County, at north end of golf course on way to frisbee golf course)
Male Chestnut-sided Warbler: Only the 8th record for the San Luis Valley.
McGillivray's Warbler
Sora

At "black tee" just 100 yards west of Cattail Clubhouse
Female American Redstart
McGillivrays Warbler
Lincolns Sparrow
Willow Flycatcher

Seems like birds are finally moving through....

Greetings All

With Crow Valley closed, I started near my home at Golden Ponds in Longmont
Few migrants were present, but an imm male AM REDSTART and adult male MAGNOLIA WARBLER were singing on the s. side of the river, e. of the bridge, on the side of the trail away from the river.

Then off to an area near Milliken, w. of where Hwy 60 crosses the S Platte. This area must be birded from the road.
An adult male SCARLET TANAGER was calling repeatedly from the edge of the road and flew off when I reached for my camera. Several BH Grosbeaks and one RB GROSBEAK was singing in the area and a few migrant Western Tanagers were still present. An AM REDSTART was here as well.

The "natural area" that heads w. from the main portion of Glenmere Park in Greeley had a small group of migrants at a grouping of Box Elder including a singing PLUMBEOUS VIREO and a female MAGNOLIA WARBLER. Farther to the west, there was an ALDER FLYCATCHER (I think about 20 have been seen in CO this spring)

Eaton Cemetery was relatively inactive.
Seeley, Neff, Neuman Reservoirs were a yawn. Windsor Res had many Western and a few Clark's Grebes, but little else.

Sorry for the delayed report.
Good Birding
