[cobirds] Woodcock?

I'm thinking about heading up to Fort Collins to try to find the Woodcock. Has anyone seen him in the last couple of days and where did you see him? I have information from the earlier posts of where people or seen him but nothing lately.

Thanks, Deb Carstensen, Littleton, Arapahoe County.

[cobirds] Barrow's Goldeneye, Adams County

I spent a few hours this morning along the Platte, up and down from Platte River Trailhead Park. The highlights were a male Barrow's goldeneye (south of the trailhead at 88th at that time, but moving north) and 4 bald eagles. There were hundreds of ducks, including buffleheads, hooded mergansers in a pond north of 88th, and lots of male green-winged teal making their high-pitched courtship calls. It was interesting to me that the pintails were already paired up and the teals were going in that direction, but the goldeneyes were apparently still single, since there were twice as many females as males.

[cobirds] RE: honeybees on cracked corn

Leon Bright et al,
Here is a response I got from CSU entomologist extraordinaire, Dr. Whitney Cranshaw, re your question about why honey bees seem to be attracted to cracked corn at your Pueblo bird feeding station:

[Honey bees visiting bird feeders in late winter or very early spring, before anything is blossoming, is something I have heard on several occasions.

I am pretty sure that on warm days that allow them to fly, they are looking for food - pollen.  (After they have defecated, which is the most important thing to get out of the way when a day arrives that let's them finally leave the hive.)  And in the absence of any pollen they collect pollen-like materials.  The small particles from broken seed/corn at bird feeders is one thing they collect, but I have also heard of honey bees collecting sawdust and even coffee ground from compost piles.

I doubt they are getting much, if any, nutrition from these non-pollen materials.  But they are hardwired to seek food and go to a Plan B when pollen is not present, even if the result is without benefit.

Whitney ]

I think this answers the question definitively.

Cheers,
Dave Leatherman

[cobirds] Re: Barrow's Goldeneyes, Larimer

A pair of Borrow's Goldeneyes continues at Watson Lake (Jan 30). I saw them fly into the lake from the Poudre River downstream, spend 30 mins on the lake and then, move to the river upstream of the lake. There was no sign of the Golden Eagles that traditionally nest on the cliff face nearby. A little further South of Watson Lake, at Reservoir Ridge Natural Area, I spotted a pair of Western Grebes swimming in one of the bays of Horsetooth Reservoir. I also spotted a Rough-legged Hawk hovering in the late afternoon winds.

The pair of Barrow's Goldeneyes first reported earlier this year by Josh Bruening at Watson Lake, between Laporte and Bellvue (Larimer) was still present this morning at 11am.  Dave Steingraeber and I also saw one Golden Eagle fly across the lake (scaring all the geese) and over the escarpment to the east.  No eagles were seen on the two nests, at least that we could see using only binoculars.

[cobirds] American Dippers in Adams County today

Hi coBirders
I  found two American Dippers in Clear Creek east of the Lowell Blvd bridge (Adams County) this afternoon about 4 p.m. One was just east of Lowell, the other was about half way to the I-76 bridges. I got to a spot where I could see both birds by turning in opposite directions. They weren't interacting with each other or vocalizing, but were close enough to hear any call or song.

[cobirds] Teller County birds

Hi all,

I've been lurking on the list for long enough that I figured it's about time that I start contributing (though my reasons for doing so are at least partially selfish, as you'll see).

I'm currently doing field work on reproductive isolation between type 2 and 5 Red Crossbills primarily in Teller County, just north of Woodland Park. As such, I've been spending a lot of time in the field and have come across some fun birds recently. Here are a few of the highlights:

Rampart Range Rd. (FS 300):
This has been a favorite area of mine recently. Pine Grosbeaks are semi-regular in both Ponderosa and Lodgepole, slightly more common in the latter. Type 2 Red Crossbills, Pygmy Nuthatches, White-breasted Nuthatches, Cassin's Finches, Steller's Jays, Clark's Nutcrackers and a few other species are incredibly abundant in Ponderosa Pine here and throughout the region. At higher elevations in Lodgepole Pine forest type 5 crossbills are common in moderate numbers. Roughly a week ago I had a pair of Gray Jays and a lone American Three-toed Woodpecker in Lodgepole (the woodpecker was technically working a Blue Spruce).

FS 339: I spent the day hiking this area today. The number of type 2 crossbills was simply insane, even more than have been found in the greater area lately, which has been extremely impressive (perhaps I'm biased..). Crossbills were singing and vocalizing like crazy. The persistent excitement ('toop') calls of one large flock alerted me to the presence of a Northern Saw-whet Owl that was hidden in a Ponderosa munching on the remains of a small rodent. Early in the day a large flock of ~55 juncos was feeding madly on the road. White-winged juncos were by far the most common and in the flock I had lesser numbers of Pink-sided, Oregon, Slate-colored, and Gray-headed. Towards the end of the day a lone Evening Grosbeak flew over near 67.

On 67 a couple miles north of Woodland Park about an hour ago I spotted a Northern Goshawk flying low over the road.

Now for the selfish bit: both call types are just starting to pair up and a main goal of mine over the next couple months is to find as many mated pairs as possible and record their flight calls (individuals within a call type vary enough that you can identify individuals with reasonable confidence by looking at sonograms of the recordings of birds in a given area). If you happen to come across any possible mated pairs of crossbills (especially type 5 or mixed pairs), I would greatly appreciate hearing about them. Please note that I have no intention of doing anything but recording them.

Good birding,
-Cody Porter

Oops. All references to the northwest part of Park were really meant to be of the northeast.

I think the day's best bird was a rare-in-winter Lewis's Woodpecker that was near the west end of Kudu Trail, west of Bailey off the east end of CR 72. The same spot had large numbers of Clark's Nutcrackers working the Ponderosa cones.

There were small numbers of three flavors of Rosy-Finches at a handful of spots at feeders in both counties, but the feeders up in Jefferson had all three species with cumulative totals into the low 100s.  Red Crossbills (mostly Type 2) were frequent in many areas. Driving the roads also produced Pine Grosbeak (3 along Wandcrest Road were in JeffCo), Gray Jays, Evening Grosbeaks, a Northern Goshawk, and a pleathora of Cassin's Finches. The total tally of Cassin's from all the day's stops was 414 birds!  One stop along Holmes Gulch Road (off Hi Meadow off CR 72) had 110 Cassin's crowding in to surrounding pines in response to my pygmy-owl imitation. Quite a few were singing, which I had not otherwise encountered so far this season.

There were other apparent seasonal changes. Townsend's Solitaires had moved into the area in numbers, probably in response to the ripening juniper berry crop. I had found just one or a few on most of my Park County outings from late fall into January, but they were sparse and quite local. Yesterday I had them at 13 stops totaling 25 individuals. And Song Sparrows, rare in Park in winter were singing, and somewhat more numerous (7) than other December to January visits, which usually had just 0 to 1 birds.

It was a lovely day. The roads in the relatively developed northwest part of the county (North Fork South Platte watershed; Pine Junction / Bailey region) have some of the most bountiful birding in the county at this time.

[cobirds] Re State Land Board

Hi:

To follow up on Larry Modesitt request for input for potential areas of protection by the State Land Board.

For years Sandy and I have been volunteer stewards for one of the Land Board's holding, Sand Creek in Larimer Co. We have been most impressed with the organization. The expertise, care and concern they demonstrate in managing their properties is impressive. If they choose an area for protection you can be assured that land will be well watched and attended to.

[cobirds] Boulder County geese, wrens, shrikes, etc.

Hello, Birders.

Yesterday, Tues, Jan. 27, mid-morning, I had an errand that took me past Prince Lake No. 2, Boulder County, where I saw a flock of geese with a bewildering array of plumages, sizes, and structures. See if you can figure out what they are:

http://tinyurl.com/CanG-CacG-quiz

Western Meadowlarks were going like crazy. Here's a recording of one:

http://www.xeno-canto.org/211486

Over at Walden Ponds, there were two Marsh Wrens in the southwest corner of Duck Pond. (Duck Pond is the pond just southwest of Cottonwood Marsh.) Also, a first-winter Northern Shrike here, plus an adult over at Sawhill Pond No. 1 (on the near side, across from the Osprey nest platform).

As Carl Starace has noted, duck numbers are on the upswing in Boulder County, and so it was yesterday at Walden/Sawhill. Most numerous were wigeons, Gadwalls, Ringnecks, and Green-winged Teal. Shovelers are increasing, too, and I saw four Northern Pintails. The ducks are quite vocal now, and most of them don't quack. This is the lovely vocalization of a male teal at Duck Pond:

http://www.xeno-canto.org/211485

Chickadees were everywhere, and, as some of you already know, I lugged my piano out there to tune it against the utterances of this particular individual:

[cobirds] Greeley Poudre Trail

I walked west from 35th Avenue in Greeley on the Poudre Trail.  First lake had about 100 Canada Geese, mostly cackling.  We saw a kingfisher, red tailed hawk, numerous Chickadees, and a GB heron.  At the second lake in on the south side, there were thousands of geese on the south end of the lake where there is open water.  The distance was too great for me to identify the geese with just binoculars, although we did not see any white geese. There were a number of duck-like birds there, but I could not definitely id any of them.  Someone with a powerful scope would be able to.  On the way out, we saw a number of mallards and a female goldeneye in the river.  Anyway, not as good of birding as last winter, but not bad for a short walk in and out on the trail.

[cobirds] How YOU can impact conservation

 Cobirders,

Colorado State Land Board (SLB) biologists and decision-makers want to hear from YOU on what PROPERTIES you consider valuable and why.

The SLB manages three million acres of Colorado land as a fiduciary for eight trusts, the largest for Colorado public schools. The SLB's Strategic Plan states (See the SLB website, trustlands.state.co.us), "The long-term economic value of our assets is intrinsically tied to the health of the land…. Throughout this plan, we refer to the practice of sound stewardship, as well as the importance of sustainability in managing trust lands. This focus is not marking a shift away from our mandates to generate reasonable and consistent revenue, but is intended instead to place a heightened emphasis on our stewardship responsibilities along with revenue production." Further, it states, "We understand that our lands are components of important and sometimes rare ecosystems and that wise actions and decisions on our part can contribute to preservation of species, landscapes, and other natural values and conservation services."

A total of 300,000 acres were allowed to be put into a Stewardship Trust to ensure closer management of lands with high conservation value. Click on "Stewardship Trust Realignment Project" for much information. Changes in population and land values occurred over the years, so the SLB began reviewing in 2011 if changes might better enhance overall stewardship. A total of 111 new properties of 131,933 acres were nominated for inclusion. If acreage is added, something must be removed, and 14 properties totaling 111,434 acres were recommended for removal. Lists of both are on the website.

The SLB also may write contractual clauses with lessees to maintain or even enhance conservation—for all lands, not just Conservation Trust lands. Thus, if done wisely, some of the acreage within Chico Basin and the Bohart Ranch, for example, could be removed from the Trust and still maintain the large intact short-grass prairie that is such an important ecosystem.

It is alarming to think that valuable properties can be degraded by removal or by fragmentation, as can be seen on the SLB map. On the other hand, a good process could enhance overall conservation value. Consequently, the more help we give the workgroup—consisting of biologists from SLB, the Colorado Natural Heritage Program, Colorado Parks and Wildlife, and others—the better the result. Therefore, also recommend the PROCESS by which the best conservation results.

Get involved on the importance of what matters to birds and their habitats and suggest how to enhance conservation value. Mindy Gottsegen of the SLB wants recommendations now, as biologists will begin working with recommendations when the official deadline of January 31 is passed. I would suggest, however, that if your analysis takes a bit longer, send it in anyway. This investigation will be lengthy.

[cobirds] Black-Crowned Night Herons and Wood Ducks in Arvada (Jefferson County)

On Saturday, 1/24/2015, we headed down to Jack B. Tomlinson Park in Arvada (Jefferson County) because of a recent eBird report of a dozen Wood Ducks, which sounded unlikely, but interesting. Sure enough, when we got there, all we could see from the quite windy parking lot were a batch of Canada Geese and a few ducks at the far end. Turns out we were right, there weren't really a dozen Wood Ducks there, there were *fifteen*, located in both the main pond and the smaller pond to the west. We went back on Sunday and found only two. However, over at nearby Four-Acre Lake Park (also Jeffco), we found clusters of geese, shovelers, and mergansers...and a juvenile Black-Crowned Night Heron sitting on a branch near the water. A few minutes later, two more juvenile herons flew in.

While not super-rare, the big numbers of Wood Ducks and aren't-they-too-far-north-for-January Night Herons were fun to see.

[cobirds] Panama and other Reservoirs today

Hi,   I had a surprising 10 DC Cormorants this morning at Panama Reservoir, east of Niwot. It had some open water but few waterfowl. Union Reservoir is still a bust ,as is Lagerman. But Clover Basin on Nelson Rd. in Longmont was hopping with ten species of waterfowl including 80 Redhead, many Common Merganser, four Canvasback and four Red Breasted Merganser. Good Birding,     Carl Starace,  Niwot
