[cobirds] Gyrfalcon (Image) - From Dec 29, 2018

Thought I would add an image to the feed to help people ID for those who have not spotted it yet. It was very noticeable on the electrical poles. Definitely a large bird for a falcon (I know its the largest), Spotting is very easy once knowing this. Thank you to everyone else that helped. I'm terrible at this by myself.

[cobirds] Loveland CBC on Jan 1

Dear Birders,
The Loveland CBC we will be held on Tuesday, January 1. We hope to find many local rarities such as gyrfalcon, and several species of gulls. If you would like to help out, we still have a few teams needing extra eyes, and a 7 mile hiking route in the foothills available for some adventurous counters. If you're interested in participating, please respond to this email off-line (ie not to Cobirds). Thank you.

Re: [cobirds] Pink Footed Goose Still Around?

Peggy,

It continues to appear on the eBird alerts, so I would say "yes" — even if those folks aren't part of COBirds.

[cobirds] kittiwake and other species at Horsetooth Res (Larimer)

John Cobb, John and Ann Reichardt and I, following a tip from a kind birder whose name we didn't get, saw the 1st-winter Black-legged Kittiwake west of the Dixon Dam (which is north of the southernmost dam called Spring Canyon) of Horsetooth Reservoir.  We also saw a Pied-billed Grebe, which is getting late for this species.  After my friends left, I lingered a bit longer.  Among the 135 or so Common Mergansers were two male Red-breasted Mergansers.  As I was leaving I encountered Peter Gent scoping the reservoir.  He said he had seen the kittiwake and asked me to look in his scope.  In the field of view, distant but distinctive, was a Long-tailed Duck.  It's head was quite dark with a large oval, white eye patch, which suggest a male molting into breeding garb.  It lacked any long tail feathers.  This is a nice species neither of us had heard reported from Horsetooth Res of late (which has been good for this species off and on over the years in early winter before the res freezes up).

[cobirds] "Storm" variant American Wigeon El Paso Co.

Greetings,

There was an very sharp "Storm" variant (all white head with green stripe, lacking speckling) male American Wigeon at Prospect lake in Colorado Springs this evening. I'm not sure of how rare this variant is here, but in my years of sorting thousands of wigeons in Indiana I have not come across a bird that exhibits this much white. Sharp duck indeed. I've linked my ebird checklist below:

[cobirds] Lincoln's Sparrow + Hermit Thrush - Belated report from west Arapahoe

On Thursday (12/27), I conducted my third annual local winter count, birding the northeast quadrant of my local home circle. I usually do this before the CBC's start, to get into the spirit of the counting season. But personal obligations and a cold kept me from doing that this year.

The northeast quadrant of my home circle covers the High Line Canal Trail in Greenwood and Cherry Hills Villages (Arapahoe). Marjorie Perry Nature Preserve, Blackmer Lake, and Dahlia Hollow Park are the hottest of the hot spots within this portion. Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens and Holly Park in Centennial are also in it. Happily, they're two of my favorite bad birding spots.

This year, I logged 40 species & about 2,200 birds, one species and a 1,000 birds off of last year's pace. (The extra 1,000 birds last year were all Canada & Cackling Geese. Numbers were lower this year. Open water was far less too.) Highlights this year included a Hermit Thrush, in the usual spot at Dahlia Hollow Park, and a rather late Lincoln's Sparrow among juncos, towhees, and Song Sparrows at a residential feeder at Marjorie Perry Nature Preserve. A Merlin with prey (lightpost in Greenwood Village) and a Greater White-fronted Goose at Westlands Park were other highlights. I've posted a more complete account here
