[cobirds] Red Rocks Trading Post Seeding Project

Fellow CoBirders,

Since the middle of October, a team of dedicated volunteers from our community has been strategically placing seed at Red Rocks Trading Post (Jefferson County) to feed our local birds, and for the enjoyment of birders from up & down the Front Range, as well as many out of state visitors.

We are writing this evening to ask for your help in making sure that this can continue. No, we are not asking you for money, we are asking for your cooperation in not putting seed out unless you are part of the group (approved of by Park Management) that is currently implementing the project.

Volunteers have been seeding at Red Rocks for several years thanks to the efforts of Mike Henwood, Tom Bush, Gwen Moore, Mark Chavez and others. It is important for you to know that our ability to keep this project going can be taken away at any time. Had it not been for our friend Joe Roller's successful negotiations with Park Management about a year ago, we would not be able to be seeding today.

Over the past year, the City of Denver has transitioned the Trading Post from a gift shop to the Colorado Music Hall of Fame. With that change, new guidelines have been set out, mostly having to do with what we can put out and where we can put it. Keeping the area clean and not giving their full-time landscaper extra work cleaning up after us is high on their priority list. They have made it clear to us that if we do not abide by a few fairly simple requests, seeding will not continue. That being said, we have volunteers placing the right seed in the right places on a daily basis, and we have a volunteer cleaning up once a week.

Thanks for your support in ensuring that we can continue to provide a rich, diverse, easily accessible place to see a great variety of winter birds for a long time by not bringing your own seed when you visit Red Rocks.

If you would like to be a part of this rewarding project or if you have any questions, please let us know.

Good birding!

[cobirds] Rusty Blackbird Barr Lake

I found two female Rusty Blackbirds below the dam at Barr Lake this afternoon. They were in the same general area as a group last year. Going below the dam from the old stone house or RMBO offices past the bridge over the ditch 200 yards, I saw them in the last group of trees. Last year they were in the area of the bridge.

[cobirds] Re: Colorado Christmas Bird Count national high counts for 2014/15

Bill,

Thanks for compiling this list.  Do these records apply strictly to the nation, or are they good for the continent as well?

Thanks!

[cobirds] Recent birding in NE CO

Greetings All

Sorry for my absence. Life has been simply to distracting....

I've been out a lot this month, and there have been several trends that have impressed

There seems to be lingering birds all over the place, even with the current cold snap; For example, yesterday, David Dowell and I had a Northern Mockingbird at Jackson State Park and 3 Virginia Rail just outside of Orchard.

Within the last week in Logan County I also had an OC Warbler (west coast, Lutescent variety), Red-headed Woodpecker, Field Sparrow, Gray Catbird, and multiple Hermit Thrushes (one of which appears to be of the "Taiga" or eastern subspecies group). Just before that, there was a Brown Thrasher at Union (oddly, my first Brown Thrasher for that location was in mid-November!), 5 Common Grackles in La Salle (Weld), and dozens at Stewarts' Pond (just south of La Salle).

For photos, see the grackles at https://www.flickr.com/photos/36088296@N08/23009236470 and then look at the next 10 photos or so

A few finches have wandered out onto the plains with a scattering of Cassin's Finches (2 yesterday at Jackson) and Red Crossbills (recorded type 3s at Holyoke and Eaton).

Waterbirds have been very spotty. I have yet to find a scoter, swan, or LT Duck this fall. Loons have been better distributed, including the much celebrated bird at Terry L and a one-day wonder at Union Res. RN Grebes seem especially common. However, in general, very few places seem to have had concentrations of waterbirds compared with other years. Most lakes seem just empty. A few are hopping (e.g. Windsor Reservoir, and to a lesser extent, L Latham Reservoir in Weld. Most other Weld lakes - even before any freezing - have been a real yawn. Same is true with the Longmont/Boulder reservoirs, again with one or two exceptions).

Geese have just really arrived in numbers during the last week or so.

Gull numbers are just building, as is the norm.

And that is what I've been up to.

Good Birding
Steve Mlodinow

[cobirds] NE Colorado birds - Sunday (Logan, Sedgwick & Washington Counties)

Kathy Mihm-Dunning and I headed up to look at the NE Colorado Reservoirs.  The weather was PERFECT.  25F and DEAD calm ALL day long!  We started out on I-76 but by the time we hit Wiggins we realized that the highway was just pure ice as a freezing drizzle coated the car and roads.  So, having this piece of information we decided that continuing up NE on dirt roads would be MUCH safer.  It was.  Road conditions improved throughout the day and the dirt "side" roads only slowed us down a little and we just re-arranged the order of the lakes we wanted to visit.

Conditions: All the lakes below were like "glass" and every bird could easily be seen.  A few "heat shimmers" along the far shores made identifying those birds impossible.  The number of waterbirds was WAY down from a week ago (the opposite of what we were expecting with the last couple cold fronts).  There was much "empty" water to scan, but there were birds and a few goodies.

Results:

North Sterling Reservoir (Fee; State Park):
LONG-TAILED DUCK - 1 imm (This bird while an immature still had not completed its post-juvenal molt!  a VERY dark brown bird with white undertail coverts and a little bit of white starting on the all brown head).  This is a plumage that I have not seen before in this species (due to them not breeding here).  Pretty COOL!
COMMON REDPOLL - 1 (with three American Goldfinches on a small patch of sunflowers)

Jumbo Reservoir (Fee; SWA "Habitat" Permit required)
LONG-TAILED DUCK - 1 imm (in its more typical first winter plumage - a dirty whitish bird with a nice large dark brown spot behind the eye)
COMMON LOON - 1 imm

Tamarack Ranch SWA
SWAMP SPARROW - 1 along the main road between the I-76 and the Platte River (East of the hunter check station at the Crook exit)

Prewitt Reservoir (Fee; SWA "Habitat" Permit required)
RED-THROATED LOON - 1 imm (seen well and photographed) Photos are attached to eBird report:  http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S26051893

Lots of geese (Snow, Ross, Canada and Cackling), all three mergansers at all three lakes (still looking for that fourth one)!

All in all a nice day out.  Even with the temps in the 20's all day it felt warmer due to the lack of any wind.  VERY nice conditions to be out and birding!

Today (Sunday) I found 2 male Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, 1 male Red-naped Sapsucker and 2 female Williamson's Sapsuckers around Canon City.  Usually sapsuckers can be found earlier in the fall in Canon City but not this year.  Given the late date I expect these sapsuckers are not migrating but are here to over winter.  Every winter 2-3 of these sapsucker species overwinter in Canon City where the temperatures do not generally get far below zero so the sapsuckers are able to drill into trees for food.  I have uploaded pics of the Red-naped Sapsucker to my Birds and Nature blog but will have to wait until tomorrow to upload pics of the other sapsuckers.

I also saw several distant Greater White-fronted Geese with a large flock of Canada Geese in the agricultural fields off of MacKenzie Ave.  I saw them for the first time yesterday and again today but still too distant to get photos.

[cobirds] Prairie falcon, white geese at Stearn's Lake Boulder Co.

A prairie falcon on the wing, several red tailed hawks, two kestrels, the resident bald eagle pair, and three white geese flying far off among the thousands of Canada and cackling geese were at Stearn's Lake in Boulder County this afternoon, 2:45. Much of the lake is still open.

[cobirds] Re: Varied thrush, Fountain Creek Regional Park, El Paso Co.

After viewing photos and hearing from Brandon, I think it is a female, not a male varied thrush.  Never got a really clear look at it.

There was a male varied thrush at Fountain Creek Regional Park around 11:00am today.  Bill Maynard and I got some photos, but not sure how mine came out.  If I have any good ones I will post on Facebook.  I know Bill got one that was at least identifiable.  The bird was near the beaver dam on the north end of the large pond (Rice's Pond?).  It was associating with one male robin.  It continued to move east until it was out of sight.  It seemed to like the olive trees near the beaver dam, though, so I hope it returns for others to see.

[cobirds] Trumpeter Swan, Lon Hagler Reservoir, Loveland, Larimer county

The swan was absent at 8:49am and duck hunters were present with many decoys in the water and on the west shore.

[cobirds] Huerfano County Update: African Collared-Dove, Common Redpoll

Hello All,

Due to our trip to Madagascar we did not put out feeders until the middle of November. We, therefore, were not expecting to see anything unusual. The cold snap and fresh snow of the past few days did finally bring around numerous Dark-eyed Juncos, American Goldfinch, White-breasted Nuthatch, Song Sparrow, Hairy Woodpecker, Black-capped Chickadee, Spotted Towhee...all the usual suspects and a pair of Cassin's Finch.

This morning we awoke to a couple of surprises:

In a flock of around 15 Eurasian Collared-Dove was one lone African Collared-Dove, yard bird # 163!
Mixed in with all the smaller birds was a lone Common Redpoll!

The only other Common Redpoll we have seen in Huerfano County visited our yard over 3 years ago!

[cobirds] Varied Thrush -- Fountain Creek Regional Park, El Paso Co. 11/29

A male Varied Thrush was seen by David Chartier and Bill Maynard at Fountain Creek Regional Park, El Paso County.  It was seen due east of the Beaver Pond, just North of the Big Pond.  Hopefully they can give better directions when they get home.
