RE: [cobirds] Steller's Jays on the plains

Hi everyone,

I don't want to diminish the excitement that comes from finding a "mountain"
bird down on the flats along the Front Range. There is obviously some sort
of irruption underway and I want to hear all about it. But there are also
quite a few records of montane corvids, Mountain Chickadees, Pygmy
Nuthatches, etc. well to the east of I-25 with some being fairly regular all
the way into western Kansas.

The county range maps for all species in Kansas may be accessed at this page
maintained by Chuck Otte on the KOS website:

http://www.ksbirds.org/checklist/maps/County_records.htm

Steller's Jay has been recorded in 13 counties in SW Kansas and has occurred
as far east as Lawrence, about 400 miles east of Burlington. The point
being, I suppose, that once some of these birds leave the mountains and head
east, they just keep on going!

Though the bird is on the wing,
You may not know why . . .
