Today Dave Leatherman and I set out for some of that Flagler manage. Just after getting off the highway and heading n. into Flagler, there is a small park on your left. We had a CAROLINA WREN singing in the neighborhood to the nw.
Spirits high, we drove to Flagler, and found the east and far south portions nearly birdless. Indeed, except for a goodly number of sparrows around the northern and ne. sides, birds were scarce at Flagler. Nonetheless, Dave called me over for a peculiar call coming from a nice patch of tall wet grasses (southwest side). Just as I appeared on the scene, the bird tee'd up and Dave called out, "SEDGE WREN." Over the next 15 minutes or so, we pursued this little bugger about. It would intermittently pop up for stunning close views that lasted 10 seconds or so, and then dive back in calling to us. Dave got something in the way of photos.
Along the west side, about 1/2 way up the water-containing part of the reservoir Dave called me over for an Empid, which kindly flew towards me, perching at eye level at about 20 feet giving stunning views. A snazzling fit for an adult YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER with round yellowish round eyering, yellow throat, highly contrasting wings, green back and auriculars, and an overall structure reminiscent of Least Fly.
Other highlights included 2 FIELD SPARROWS, a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, Grasshopper Sparrow, Gray-headed Junco (rather unusual out on the plains) and innumerable RB Nuthatches
We spent the last couple hours of day at Last Chance. Stunning. Birds everywhere. At the pond below the parking area was a HOODED WARBLER and a WINTER WREN. A White-breasted Nuthatch in the are proved to be of the less expected Montane race. Across the street (kitty corner) from the rest area, I pished in a BLUE-HEADED VIREO whilst Dave found TWO PHILADELPHIA VIREOS feeding together, all of which allowed photography.
