[cobirds] Please follow Chico regulations - El Paso/Pueblo Counties

Birders,

Checklists are being reported by birders staying well past 1 pm at Chico Basin Ranch.
Please note that the current State Land Board regulations allow us on the ranch only from 7 am to 1 pm. This is noted clearly on the registration form.

Aiken Audubon worked constantly for close to 5 long years to secure this lease, and we could lose it if the regulations aren't followed. While we appreciate that many folks are unhappy with the new rules, please don't ruin it for the rest of us.

Thank you.

Linda Hodges

[cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch Banding Station Report/Bird Conservancy of the Rockies- May 17, 2024

Another quiet day at the banding station. MacGillivray's Warblers and Swainson Thrushes were the most common captures. A Nice male Black-headed Grosbeak and Lark Sparrow showed off for the Pikes Peak Birding and Nature Festival folks today. The Hooded Warbler must have moved on as it was not heard or observed this morning around the banding station.

13 New Banded Birds
Wilson's Warbler- 1
MacGillivray's Warbler- 4
House Wren- 1
Dusky Flycatcher- 1
Lark Sparrow-1
Swainson's Thrush- 4
Black-headed Grosbeak- 1

No recaptures today

It seems unusually warm for May to me but then I keep hearing-" That's Colorado for you!"
Have a good day! The banding station will be open tomorrow from Sunrise until @ 11 am. Sunday it will be closed and reopen on Monday morning. Stop by and share your sightings if in the area.

***Remember Chico Basin is open to a limited number of people each day during this month. Please go to the Aiken Audubon Website to register for a morning to visit. There is a daily registration fee.

[cobirds] Black-headed Grosbeak in west Centennial, Arapahoe County

Hello Fellow Birders,

This Spring's remarkable parade of birds through my little townhouse yard near Holly & Arapahoe in west Centennial continues with the arrival yesterday of a male Black-headed Grosbeak.  The tanagers and orioles appear to have moved on.

Keep Smilin',

Re: [cobirds] Response From the AOS to the Petition on Eponymous Bird Names

Chuck,
I had a strong reaction to them using the word "harmful" as well. Glad I'm not alone.
They've obviously made up their minds how this is gonna go, and aren't really open to other views.
Plus, it's quite clear they never heard the expression "sticks and stones may break my bones, but NAMES will NEVER HURT me".

[cobirds] Breeding Bird Survey routes available in Colorado

Colorado Birders,

The North American Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) is our continent's premier long term bird monitoring program. There are many active BBS routes in Colorado, and right now 35 routes are open for a new observer. Open Routes are listed below, and you can view the vacant routes and some details for each at the BBS's Vacant Routes page. Choose the state and find the route. You can choose to show the route on the map, and view route details including species recorded on the route in prior years.

Many open routes are in interesting areas of Colorado, and some are near to the Denver area. If you wish to sign on, your survey materials will be sent promptly. Routes are surveyed in the window of May 27 to July 7. So the season is upon us.

If you are an experienced BBS surveyor and would like to add a new route, great. If you would be new to the BBS, conducting these surveys requires significant field ID skills (especially by ear), and familiarity with the birds that live in the region. And the BBS is looking for a minimum of a three year commitment to survey the route. You should be able to identify the species known to be along the route by sound; that is, you, and not Merlin ;-)  You can view the list of species for each route. And be ready for the energetic commitment and time needed to perform the survey, which might include distant driving to and from the route on additional days. A scouting day is usually also needed for a new route.

I'd be happy to talk about what is needed and how to prepare with anyone who is interested. I've been a BBS surveyor since 1992 and it is the best part of my birding year. I have multiple routes that I survey in Colorado, and there are many other surveyors, too, working behind the scenes and loving it. I think all strong Colorado birders who can make the time commitment should consider being a BBS volunteer surveyor. You will learn a lot, too.

BBS Colorado state coordinator

[cobirds] Fremont County warblers 5/16

Van Truan and I went to Florence and Canon City this morning.  There were a couple of nice warblers along the Canon City Riverwalk, east of Sells Ponds along the Bluff Trail.  A male non singing Mourning Warbler (my 4th one now this spring in CO), a female Blackpoll Warbler, a singing Ovenbird, and a Broad-winged Hawk.  We saw a singing male Bobolink at Pathfinder Park in Florence and an Eastern Bluebird at Florence River Park.  It was nice to bird up at Temple Canyon Park, where Gray Flycatchers and Ash-throated Flycatchers were singing on their breeding grounds.

There were many Western Tanagers around today, couldn't find any rarer Tanagers unfortunately.

Good birding,

[cobirds] Broad-tailed Hummer with Jewel Spot This Time Of Year?

Do female Broad-tailed Hummingbirds sometimes have the center jewel spot normally associated with young males in late summer/fall?

I thought the males would be all colored this time of year, even a first year. I also have an obvious female and a male showing up, so it's a third individual.

[cobirds] Lewis's Woodpecker, SW Denver

Had to bail on a further afield birding adventure this morning (Thurs., 16 May’24) to take care of some stuff here at the house (Athmar Park, SW Denver, Denver Co.), so a little bummed.  However, Karma does exist and has come into play as we’ve had a pretty busy morning so far around here including a very surprising LEWIS’S WOODPECKER flying over our deck as we were having breakfast.  While this specific bird will likely not be repeatable, I bring this up to the group as good numbers of Lewis’s can often be seen over broad areas if they happen to move in, so keep your eyes open.

Good Birding,

[cobirds] Chipping and Lincoln's Sparrows, Louisville

CObirders:

A flurry of activity occurred at my feeders just after 12:00 pm today.  New migrants included both Lincoln's and Chipping Sparrows.
Two Western Tanagers, White-crowned Sparrows and many Pine Siskins are continuing.

All were attracted to my waterfall and bird bath. See Ebird checklist S174739629 for complete list and pictures.

[cobirds] Sparrows!!

CObirders,
In the past hour, I have seen many birds, notably sparrows, visit my waterfall.  They all came in at once!

New ones are Chipping and Lincoln's Sparrows.  Continuing are several White-crowned Sparrows and Spotted Towhee.

Continuing visitors are many Pine Siskins and at least one Western Tanager.

I'll submit a checklist with photos.

[cobirds] Great Horned Finches in west Centennial, Arapahoe County

Hello Fellow Birders,

We just saw our first fledgling House Finches of the year in our little townhouse yard near Holly & Arapahoe.  The fledglings often have a few unkempt feathers on their heads that are similar to the feather tufts of Great Horned Owls, thus the moniker Great Horned Finch.

In other news, the Bullocks Orioles have moved on but the Western Tanagers are still feeding up for the rest of their journey northward.

And the White-breasted Nuthatches who usurped our nestbox from the Black-capped Chickadees this year are frantically feeding their brood.  I find it interesting that they've been feeding them bits of suet from our homemade suet cake.

   Lovely time of year...

Keep Smilin',

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Chatfield Banding Station, 5/14/24

Had a good banding day, with a nice mix of species early in the morning to share with the Tuesday Birders, who made their annual visit to the station.  A total of 19 new birds, 4 returns, a total of 16 species, 3 of which were first of season.  My favorites were a dainty Marsh Wren, a species rarely caught at the station, and a return American Redstart female who was banded as an adult in 2019, making her at least 7 years old.  Our small breeding group of Redstarts includes some hardy birds!

Here's the breakdown:

Dusky Flycatcher 1
Least Flycatcher 1 FOS
Bushtit 1
House Wren 2
Marsh Wren 1 FOS
Gray Catbird 4 new, 1 banded 2022
Orange-crowned Warbler 1
Yellow Warbler 1 new, 1 banded 2021
American Redstart 1 new, 1 banded 2019
Common Yellowthroat 2
Wilson's Warbler 1
Yellow-breasted Chat 1 return
Spotted Towhee 1
Lincoln's Sparrow 1
Lazuli Bunting 1 FOS

We are banding Tuesday through Sunday (closed Mondays) through May 31, weather permitting.  You can register to visit on the weekends through the Denver Audubon website.  (Some times/days are sold out, so sign up now if you are interested!)

[cobirds] Pineridge Natural Area May 7th - 14th

The station is still getting busy days as the composition of bird species shifts. The Bird Conservancy event on World Migratory Big Day brought in many interested groups to see the station and learn about the banding process. There were some slower days last week that lend well to teaching many groups. With Yellow-rumped warblers dominating the forest last week, only 1 was caught on Tuesday the 14th, so the bulk of them must have moved North. We got our first Yellow Warblers, a pair of recaptured Bullock's Orioles from the station last fall, and a Yellow-breasted Chat. Here are the station totals for banded birds and recaptured birds:

Mourning Dove - 1

Red-shafted Flicker - 3 New, 4 Recap

Least Flycatcher - 1

Dusky Flycatcher - 1

Black-capped Chickadee - 1 New, 10 Recap

*Bushtit - 2 New

Ruby-crowned Kinglet - 1

Blue-gray Gnatcatcher - 1

Rock Wren - 1

House Wren - 5

Gray Catbird - 12 New 2 Recap

Brown Thrasher - 2

European Starling - 3

*Swainson's Thrush - 18

Hermit Thrush - 3

American Robin - 5 New 1 Recap

American Goldfinch - 20

White-crowned Sparrow (Gambel's) - 4

Song Sparrow - 2 Recap

Lincoln Sparrow - 7 New 1 Recap

Spotted Towhee - 7 New 3 Recap

*Yellow-breasted Chat - 1

Bullock's Oriole - 1

Red-winged Blackbird - 26

*Brown-headed Cowbird - 1

*Common Grackle - 6

*Northern Waterthrush - 4

Orange-crowned Warbler - 33 New, 7 Recap

Yellow-rumped Warbler (Myrtle, Audubon's, and Unknown Intermediates) - 335 New, 24 Recap

Wilson's Warbler - 1

This banding station will be operating Tuesday through Saturday until May 30th, weather and trail conditions permitting. Visitors are welcome and can register here. Park at the Maxwell Natural Area parking lot and walk south along the trail towards Dixon Reservoir, and you will see our table and awning on the hillside to the left of the access trail. Come visit!
