[cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Barr Lake Station, 9/15/18

It doesn't get much better than this morning at the banding station - Mid-September can be the perfect time, as the sparrows and other late migrants are starting to arrive and before the warblers have finished.  Counting recaps that had been banded earlier in the season, we caught a total of 69 birds of 19 species, and our visitors - it was our Ed Dept volunteer appreciation morning, so many of our dedicated, hard working volunteers were out with their families - got up-close looks at a lot of cool birds.  Competing for the coolest and rarest of the day were a Golden-crowned Kinglet and a Sage Thrasher, neither of which is regularly caught here.  (SATH won, only the third in the last 10 or so years.)  Here's a breakdown of the 56 new birds:

Dusky Flycatcher 1
Warbling Vireo 1
House Wren 1
Golden-crowned Kinglet 1 (FOS)
Hermit Thrush 2 (FOS)
Sage Thrasher 1 (FOS)
Orange-crowned Warbler 7
Yellow Warbler 1
Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 2
Townsend's Warbler 1
Common Yellowthroat 1
Wilson's Warbler 20
Green-tailed Towhee 1
Chipping Sparrow 6
Clay-colored Sparrow 2
Lincoln's Sparrow 5
White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel's 3 (FOS)

We are open 6 days a week (closed Monday), weather permitting through October 14. We are opening nets at 6:30 and should have birds back at the station by 7:15. We will close most days by about 11:30, earlier as long as this heat continues. School groups arrive most weekdays at about 9:30. The best time to visit (fewest people, most birds) is before 9:30 weekdays and Sundays.

Come visit!
