[cobirds] Ron Ryder

The wonderful thing about Ron Ryder: he encouraged everyone who had an interest in wildlife - professional biologists, citizen scientists, plain beginners. He provided encouragement to anyone starting or conducting any constructive wildlife project.

He initiated the Breeding Bird Survey in Colorado as its first state coordinator and recruited the first route-runners (including DFO's wonderful leader, Don Thatcher). He provided support and participation to the first Colorado Breeding Bird Atlas, served on its Technical Committee, and completed more than seven atlas blocks (most in the Pawnee National Gressland area).

I always thought of him as the center of Colorado's ornithological pulse. His legion of contributions did and still enrich our field ornithology in Colorado.
