[cobirds] Field Trip Announcement: Perseids, Singing Crickets, & Nocturnal Migrants, Aug. 12

Hello, Everybody.

You don't want to miss it: The 2016 Perseids meteor shower is forecast to be one of the best in recent memory. Astronomers are forecasting a meteor "outburst," maybe even a rare meteor "storm." After the moon sets at around 1am, the skies will go dark, and the Perseids will dazzle. And we'll be there to see it. So please join Colorado Field Ornithologists and Yours Truly for this annual exercise in sleep-deprived wonder, this coming Friday, Aug. 12 at an undisclosed location in eastern Boulder County. See below for info on when and where to meet.

We'll also be listening for night birds. We'll listen for resident owls and rails, plus nocturnal migrants like Chipping Sparrows. I've heard nocturnal migrant Upland Sandpipers a couple nights in the past week, so we'll be listening for "Uppies" too. If you "need" (you don't, but I digress...) Upland Sandpiper for your Boulder County list, this is your best chance.

And orthopterans. Various field crickets, tree crickets, and ground crickets are singing now, and we'll learn the names of the common ones. Greater anglewings started singing a couple nights ago, so we'll be listening for them too.

This outing, sponsored by Colorado Field Ornithologists, is free and open to the public. RSVP required. Please email me offline (I'm tfloyd "at" aba "dot" org) for details on our undisclosed meeting place, undisclosed meeting time, and secret handshake. We will wrap up by around 6am. As we head back to our cars, the resident African Collared-Doves will have started singing. If that's not exciting, them I'm a monkey's uncle.

Hope to see ("see") some of you on Friday morning ("morning")!

Ted Floyd
Lafayette, Boulder County
