Hi COBirders,
Well, things were HOPPING at the RMBO banding station at Chico Basin Ranch this morning. Full banding report to follow.
This was our first banding day for the season - and we expected a busy day after seeing all of the warbler and empid activity continuing past noon yesterday. Sure enough - we started out swamped and that continued until we closed nets about 1100.
I think a rough count was about 120 birds banded today by Nancy Gobris, Susan Craig, and myself. I don't have the total numbers banded of each species, but I would guess about 60 Wilson's Warblers, a couple Yellow Warblers, 4 MacGillivray's Warbler, an OVENBIRD, a NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, an American Redstart was in the hand, briefly(!), several Red-breasted Nuthatches, (and at least one White-breasted seen also), Ruby-crowned Kinglet, 4 Swainson's Thrush, 2 Western Tanagers, Spotted and Green-tailed Towhees, 2 Cassin's Vireos, 2 Curve-billed Thrashers (it's been years since the last one was banded!), several Brown Thrashers and Gray Catbirds, House Wrens, American Robins, Lincoln's and Chipping Sparrows, and flycatchers : Ash-throated, Dusky, Hammond's, Least, "Western", Gray, - probably 25 empids were netted today. Most I've seen in one day there!
With a big cold front supposed to go through tonight, we're kind of expecting more of the same tomorrow. What a way to start!
