[cobirds] National Public Lands workday at John Martin Reservoir

Cobirders,

This message is sent with permission from the Cobirds moderator.

National Public Lands Day takes place the last Saturday of September
every year. The US Army Corps of Engineers at John Martin Reservoir
proudly takes part in this national effort, and focuses their efforts on
preparing and preserving habitat for nesting Piping Plovers and Least
Terns. This year, the date is Saturday, September 26th.

This year's effort will focus on clearing salt-cedar trees ringing an
island projected as the primary nest site in Colorado for Piping Plovers
and Least Terns in 2016. If the water doesn't recede as rapidly as
expected, we will provide safe canoe crossing of the 30 foot wide
channel currently separating this island from the mainland. Help is
needed cutting sapling salt cedar (tamarisk) trees ringing the island at
the current water level. For those trees that somehow survived being
under water for the past three months, I will apply an approved
herbicide (Garlon IV) that will put an end to their efforts to colonize
bare beach habitat. We have tools and work gloves, but if you have a
favorite lopper (mine's named "Cindy") feel free to bring it. We will
also provide water and snacks. Typically, we start around 8:30 in the
morning, and go until noon. We are working on providing free camping at
Lake Hasty Campground in John Martin State Park.

Come on out to SE Colorado, and feel the satisfaction of doing something
that will really make a difference for the birds that are so important
to our heritage.
