After our pokey Mon & Tues, I arrived at the banding station this morning hoping for nothing more than enough sparrows to get through 3 groups of 7th graders. But the birds always have a surprise or two…….instead we banded mostly Warblers, Ruby-crowned Kinglets, and a Rose-breasted Grosbeak…..another species that we haven’t caught since 2005 (and only 4 before that). Two days in a row with a big, gorgeous, noisy bird with loads of personality! Here’s the breakdown of the 36 birds banded (okay, there were a few sparrows, plus flycatchers for the first time in several days):
Dusky Flycatcher 2
House Wren 2
Ruby-crowned Kinglet 6
Orange-crowned Warbler 6
Audubon’s Warbler 6
Wilson’s Warbler 9
Spotted Towhee 1 (FOS)
Lincoln’s Sparrow 1
Slate-colored Junco 1
Rose-breasted Grosbeak 1 (HY male)
House Sparrow 1
For those of you looking for a window of calm, no school group tomorrow (Friday). Also, no groups on Sunday.
We are open 6 days per week, weather permitting, through Oct 14, so 3+ weeks left. Previously announced closed days are 9/26, 10/4 and 10/10. We will also be closed Monday, 10/1, because we are hosting an evening group that day.
