I was dumbfounded today to witness a flock of 10 to 12 Pinyon Jays at 11300 feet near Montgomery Pass (above Cameron Pass) in Larimer County. In my 20 years hiking in the Medicine Bow range in Larmier County I have never seen Pinyon Jays. This flock came in out of no where about 2 pm, landed briefly in a krumholz tree about 100 feet away from me, vocalized, and flew on north. I had a good look at them through my binoculars while they were perched, seeing the dark blue bodies and darker heads, eliminating Scrub Jay, and they had no crests like the Steller's Jays (which currently our devastating my sunflower feeders at home!). The vocalization, which I checked against my Audubon Birds app, was the final clincher. Pinyon Jay! Wow!
