[cobirds] Gilpin County Birds

I birded Gilpin County today in hopes of finding a Townsend’s Warbler up there.  I wish all my hopes would work out so well as I had a total of 15 Townsend’s, all very close to the NE corner of the county.  All-in-all it was a six warbler day—not bad for this tiny mountain county.  Meredith McBurney’s note on 8 Townsend’s banded at Barr Lake means that they were all over the place today.

At one point I made my way up to the tundra on FR 353 which runs west towards James Peak off the Apex-Toll road.  The road was manageable in my Ford Escape and holds interesting possibilities for tundra species like Brown-capped Rosy Finch and Ptarmigan, but not today.  However, it was jam packed with Clark’s Nutcrackers, ATVs, dirt bikes and target shooters.  Oh, well—but the Limber Pine cone crop looks outstanding if someone wants to venture that way before the snows for crossbills.
