Today was another breezy day, and we ended up with 11 new birds and 5 recaptures. Fortunately this included two new species - a Song Sparrow, which I have been expecting to catch for a while, and a Gambel's Quail (picture included), which was a welcome surprise. Quail-sized birds do not usually get caught in our nets (they tend to bounce out), so being able to have this bird in the hand is a treat. Unfortunately the quail is not included in our official banding totals, as I do not have a permit to band game birds.
-- White-crowned Sparrow (Gambel's) 6 new, 4 recaptures
White-crowned Sparrow (Mountain) 3
Song Sparrow 1 (FOS)
Spotted Towhee 1
Bewick's Wren 1 recapture
Gambel's Quail (unbanded)
We are banding every weekday at Connected Lakes State Park, and visitors are welcome! It is advisable to visit before 9:30, since that is when school groups tend to arrive.
