[cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies Banding Report - Barr Lake, 10/2/19

An unconventional but ultimately VERY nice banding day!  We opened 2 hours late because of drizzle and cold.  Activity was slow at first under cloudy skies; the only "excitement" came when a small herd of marauding deer ran through the front section of the station, taking out three nets.  As the sun poked through the clouds, flocks started moving around - Yellow-rumpeds in one net, Kinglets in another, sometimes with Orange-crowneds mixed in.  Along the way, we caught three rare-ish species - our second Golden-crowned Kinglet of the season, a Chestnut-sided Warbler, and our favorite of the day, a Philadelphia Vireo. We ended the day with 50 new birds banded (plus 16 recaps from earlier in the season):

Downy Woodpecker 1
Hammond's Flycatcher 1
Cordilleran Flycatcher 1
Philadelphia Vireo 1
Golden-crowned Kinglet 1
Ruby-crowned Kinglet 7
Hermit Thrush 2
Orange-crowned Warbler 10
Chestnut-sided Warbler 1
Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 18
Yellow-rumped Warbler, Myrtle 3
Wilson's Warbler 1
Song Sparrow 2
Lincoln's Sparrow 1

We are now opening nets at 7:40 and should have birds back at the station by 8:20. We are closing nets most days at 11:40. We are open 6 days per week, Tuesday-Sunday, through October 13. All of this is weather permitting! School groups arrive most weekdays at about 9:30. The best time to visit (fewest people, most birds) is before 9:30 weekdays and Sundays.

Come visit!
