[cobirds] Phillips and Yuma County Sunday

Greetings -

After reading all of the tantalizing posts coming from Phillips and
Yuma Counties lately, Dick Schottler, Steve Larson, Allison Kondler,
Paul Differding, Joey Kellner and I headed out that way at an unseemly
early hour this morning to see what we could find.

Our first real stop was the Holyoke Cemetery where we met up with
Steve Mlodinow and Christie who had arrived there a bit ahead of us.
The place was crawling with birds. The best being:
Singing Pine Warbler found first by Steve M.
Nashville Warbler
Eastern Towhee
Eastern Meadowlark - seen and then IDed by call
White-throated Sparrow

The six of us moved on to the City Park which wasn't as lively, but
still quite productive with:
Nashville Warbler
Black-throated Green Warbler
Palm Warbler
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker
Purple Finch - seen and heard calling

The final productive stop in Holyoke was the Courthouse with:
Red-eyed Vireo
Philadelphia Vireo (surprise surprise!)

We next headed south to Wray where we birded Stalker Ponds SWA and the
adjacent Wray State Fish Hatchery.

The only notable bird at Stalker was a White-throated Sparrow, however
we got a consolation prize with a baby Western Hog-nosed Snake :-)

The Wray State Fish Hatchery proved more birdy with highlights being:
Blue-headed Vireo (singing)
Red-eyed Vireo
Magnolia Warbler
Eastern Phoebe

Our final stop was the location formally known as Bonny State Park.
It was getting late and the weather was intermittently nice and
stormy. We only birded the former Wagon Wheel Campground on the south
side and turned up a few good birds:
Nashville Warbler
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker
Plumbeous Vireo
Warbling Vireo
Black-capped Chickadee
Common Nighthawk

I am certain I have missed some critical highlight, but it has been a
long day and it is time to catch up on some sleep.

A fantastic day out.

Good birding,

Kathy Mihm Dunning

[cobirds] RMBO--Grand Junction Banding Wk.1

The first week of banding in Grand Junction went very well.  The nets are in new locations this year, and it is making a big difference.  We have the nets set up in mature Skunkbrush/Rabbitbrush, and we are catching lots of White-crowned Sparrows.  As a scientist, this makes me happy, because catching more individuals from the same species means that we'll have better data for that species.  Here is a summary for the week.  We caught a total of 79 new individuals from 12 species.  We also caught 3 individuals that were originally banded last year (2 Black-capped Chickadees and 1 Bushtit).

White-crowned Sparrow (Gambel's): 26
White-crowned Sparrow (unknown): 13
White-crowned Sparrow (Mountain): 9
Wilson's Warbler: 10
American Robin: 9
Spotted Towhee: 4
Orange-crowned Warbler: 3
Bewick's Wren: 1
Black-capped Chickadee: 1
Bushtit: 1
Song Sparrow: 1
Oregon Dark-eyed Junco: 1

Don't forget that the public day is this Saturday.  I'll be banding from about 6:30-11:30, so please stop by and check out my sparrows!

[cobirds] RMBO Barr Banding Station Report, 9/30/12

Slowest day of the season – only 7 new birds.  We were rewarded with a rarity – a Palm Warbler (Western).  There have been 4 captured at Barr prior to this one (2005, 2001, 1996, 1993).  Here’s today’s very short list:

House Wren       1

Orange-crowned Warbler            1

Western Palm Warbler  1

Wilson’s Warbler              2

Song Sparrow    1

Dark-eyed Junco, Oregon            1

Just a reminder – we are CLOSED TOMORROW (10/1) because our school group is coming in the late afternoon.  We have just 2 weeks of banding left, and both weeks we will be closed on Thursday (10/4 and 10/11).  Final day of banding this fall is Sunday 10/14.

[cobirds] Black-throated Blue Warbler---Denver West / Jeffco

Today, I decided to try Denver West Business Park.  I usually visit this place later in the fall when the Yellow-rumped Warblers flock up and sometimes have something good mixed in.  I ran into a pretty good mixed flock near the small statue park.  This area is adjacent to the neighborhood to the east that has great shrubbery, a small stream, trees, and cover.  I had a fast moving large flock that included Bushtits, Orange-crowned Warblers, Red-breasted Nuthatches, Black-capped Chickadees, White-breasted Nuthatch, Ruby-crowned Kinglets, Downy Woodpecker, and a BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER.  The bird was 15 feet up in a cottonwood and disappeared with the rest of the flock toward the neighborhood that borders the park. I made the mistake of going for a photo instead of following the bird.  I ran into several flocks that contained many Yellow-rumps  but the flock with the Black-throated Blue didn't have any.  I had a Hairy Woodpecker and only one Wilson's Warbler.

[cobirds] Last Chance, less birds, Washington Co.

Hi all,

Got to Last Chance late this afternoon and the good birds from yesterday were not there this late afternoon. Flight conditions must have been fairly good last night for migrants and I think alot took advantage of the weather conditions. Driving home at night did not have good conditions. See below.

The WINTER WREN was there, along with the Sora. I could not get a good look of the Winter Wren although it was about three feet hidden infront of me. So, I could not tell which subspecies the bird was. It did not call either. The Sora was a young bird[not an adult]. I have seen the past 3 falls in a row, 3 different looking Soras at Last Chance. They know a good place to stop.  Pondweed, which is high in protein is floating all ontop of the tiny pond. The Sora was feeding on the pondweed, plus along the sides of the water. I did not see the Philadelphia Vireo, but got a so, so, look at the Blue-headed Vireo [the sun was going down].
I also did not see the Palm Warbler or a Townsend's Warbler. The Clay-colored Sparrow, Lincoln's, and some White-crowned, and 2 White-throated Sparrows were still there. Alot of Wilson's Warblers were everywhere, along with Yellow-rumped Warblers. Every bird seen yesterday by Mark and Kirk were still around but in much, much, less numbers. I also did not see the Marsh Wren.
*The only new bird for Last Chance[compared to yesterday's list] which I saw today, was a Yellow-breasted Chat.

While I looked down into the many new, 12 inch high, Russian Thistle plants, I saw gobs of flys. They had brownish/ orange eyes and black bodies. There were 100's of them
climbing up and down the thistles. This year, is this where the many flys hang out, that also end up in the Last Chance parking lot, portable bathrooms? There were so many that I wondered if there had been a recent hatch.  The Warblers were not feeding on these adult flys.

All and all a nice visit, until driving back in the dark, I hit a deer in my brand new second hand Jeep. This was the first time I had driven the jeep, but I guess it is the jeep's last chance for a while since it looks pretty much totaled in the front left area. Fender is buckeled outwards and head lights do not work, etc. As if the deer damage was not enough, then I heard a pebble hit my windshield. Is this jeep jinxed ?

I sorry for forgetting the name of the lady from Colorado Springs, who was watching birds also.

Happy Birding!
Tina Jones
