We waited until the sun was up and warming the nets before doing a partial open today. It was a beautiful morning, but very slow in terms of birds, at least those down low enough to get caught in our nets. We spent the extra time oohing and aahing over the hundreds of soaring pelicans, black and white against the clear blue sky. Only banded 8 birds, for our slowest day of the season:
-- Ruby-crowned Kinglet 3
Spotted Towhee 1
Savannah Sparrow 1 (Our third this year, all of them hatch year birds. Bringing the total in 31 years to four; the other was caught in 1991.)
White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel's 2
Dark-eyed Junco, Pink-sided 1
This is our last weekend of the season! Weather report says it will be cold, but if it is like today it will be quite pleasant in the sun. We plan to open at 7:40 and have birds back at the station by about 8:30. Closing at 11:40.
