[cobirds] not Baltimore Ravens, and other Boulder County birds Jan 11 & 12

Yesterday, Jan 11, I headed to Hawthorne Gulch in Boulder for the third time this year in search of the Northern Cardinal.  I found him a little bit up the trail from the first switch back.  He was feeding on the ground in thick cover west of the trail.

I then headed over to Boulder Creek & 75th in search of some of the goodies spotted there recently.  The Belted Kingfisher is still hanging out in the same tree wast of the bridge.  Walking the path right next to the creek a 20-25 Common Redpoll flushed from the other side of the Creek.  I wished they would of stayed a little longer because there was a nice pale individual among them. The rest of the walk was uneventful and it started snowing and blowing.  Right before the group of trees next to the creek by the social trail, the Swamp Sparrow flew off the Creek and into the cover of the scrub around the Cottonwoods.  It flushed one more time and the disappeared.

Today I joined Bill Kaempfer and Maggie Boswell up into the mountains to see if the weather brought in anything of interest.  Our first stop was to check the flock of Cedar Waxwings at Mohawk & Baseline for their northern cousins.  No luck.

Next stop Allenspark, with a great look at five Bighorn Sheep standing in the road in South St. Vrain Canyon.  The feeders at the Fawn Brook in were quiet, but the other feeders in town had a small flock of Evening Grosbeak.  Also feeding in the area were Clark's Nutcracker, all three nuthatches, Steller's Jay, Black-billed Magpie, and Mountain Chickadee.

Stopping at the feeder in Ward added Pine Grosbeak to our daily list and a slow drive down Lefthand Canyon in hopes of the other pygmy we had a flyover Golden Eagle.

The last stop was at the bottom of the canyon where a mob of American Crows were surrounding a Great Horned Owl in a small tree.
