Hi all:
As I've said to quite a few people around the country, I'd put Colorado's birding community up against nearly any other state's, both in terms of skill/knowledge and dedication, and the redpolls just offer yet another great example.
Hoary Redpoll eBird data from January 2013 (some/many flagged records yet to clear review)
Common Redpoll eBird data from January 2013 (some/many flagged records yet to clear review)
This redpoll hit was something for which I had hoped would happen during my 14 years in Colorado; to no avail. I had figured that I had more experience with Hoary than nearly any other resident and figured that I could find the state's first if we just got a good redpoll hit. Of course, single feeders in the state are now supporting more redpolls than were found in the state during my 14 years there, all put together!
I encourage all to study up on the separation of exilipes race Hoary Redpoll and Common Redpoll, a feat that can be quite tricky at times. I suggest, particularly, David Sibley's excellent treatment of the problem -- http://www.sibleyguides.com/2008/01/a-character-index-for-redpoll-identification/. I suggest this so that we can find as many GOOD Hoaries as we can this year, because it might be another 35 years before the next good redpoll hit!
Enjoy,
Tony Leukering
