[cobirds] Fountain Creek Reg. Park Winter Bird Count Results - El Paso County

COBirders,

The 21st annual Fountain Creek Regional Park Winter Bird Count was held on a rather cold morning starting with a sunny 12 degrees F ending with a cloudy 23 F.  Twenty-nine birders covered the roughly 400 acre park between the hours of 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. with a few other birds seen later in the afternoon.

Fifty species and 2,176 birds were observed today.  Best birds include:
Snow Goose - 2
Cackling Goose - 9
Virginia Rail - 2
Killdeer - 7
Wilson's Snipe - 2
Herring Gull - 3
Mourning Dove - 1
Hairy Woodpecker - 3
Northern Shrike - 3
Winter Wren - 1
American Robin - 1
Harris's Sparrow - 1

In addition, there was a very dark Mallard-type duck.

We are keeping track of count week birds, so if anyone is out there birding in the next three days, please let me know what you find.  We missed on many of the diving ducks, American Pipit, Bushtit and others.  Hope to hear from you.
