Re: [cobirds] Guidance for Identifying Red Crossbill Types

Personally, I can't identify this Red Crossbill recording to type, as it is a recording of song, not calls. The songs of Red Crossbills are highly variable, and although they do probably vary from type to type, I don't think anyone has nailed down the basic outlines of the variation.

However, kudos to Donna for paying attention to crossbills and uploading her recordings! This is how discoveries are made.

I birded the USFS Manitou Experimental Forest in Teller County for a bit today and saw and heard a Red Crossbill that sounded very different from the others we were hearing and seeing there and at Manitou Lake.

I'm looking for some guidance on how to determine which type it was. I have a recording and 2 photos. Here is a link to the checklist with the audio recording captured using Merlin. It was interesting that Merlin thought this one was a Northern Mockingbird, although it ID'd all the other Red Crossbills I saw and heard today as Red Crossbills.

I have Nathan Pieplow's Peterson Field Guide to Bird Sounds. The recording seems closest to Type 4, but not as close as I'd like.
