Birds of interest the last two days at Grandview Cemetery at the west terminus of Mountain Avenue in Fort Collins are the following:
Monday, September 10
Dark-eyed Junco (2) First of season (FOS) at low elevation for me
Ruby-crowned Kinglet (1) FOS at low elevation for me
MacGillivray's Warbler (1f) along the ditch, a species I only see at this site maybe once or twice a year
Olive-sided Flycatcher (1, has been favoring the thin-crowned very tall spruce in Section S (Soldier Monument section in the very center))
Western Wood-Pewee (at least 5)
Bald Eagle (1a, flyover)
Mourning Dove (likes to sit on top of the fireman statue's head just e of Section S, apparently lacks appropriate reverence for first-responders, or perhaps thinks he's a dalmatian)
Chipping Sparrow (good size flock of mostly juveniles roaming around)
Tuesday, September 11
Townsend's Warbler (4, in pines, spruce and elms, biggest group of this species I've seen this migration, distinctive chip gives them away)
Woodhouse Scrub-Jay (1) Quick fly-thru, first of year (FOY) at Grandview, I think only my second at the site in 44+ years
Clay-colored Sparrow (1 in with Chipping Sparrow flock, FOY at Grandview)
Turkey Vulture (1 way up high, going w to e)
First ever at Grandview giant spreadwing (damselfly).
First ever guy practicing golf for an extended time wholly WITHIN the cemetery. Apparently inspired by chipping sparrows, he repeated used his 9 iron to hit a ball back and forth within Section 8. As his ball ricocheted off headstones, going this way and that, I had to wonder if someday "links pinball" would be an Olympic sport? All while wearing a Confederate flag ball cap, go figure.
Miscellany
Brown Creeper (FOS at low elevation, in my apartment complex east of campus on 10Sept)
Green Heron (2) Prospect Ponds Natural Area, 11Sept, s of Prospect on Sharp Point Drive, first pond south of feedlot pond
Barn-Owl (all (5, or was it 6?) young of the family under the Prospect Bridge at the Poudre River apparently fledged last night, one bird (a parent?) still evident 50 feet south of the whitewash-stained square nest hole in an identical hole near the south side of the bridge. This square has a single pipe running thru it and the bird was sitting a few feet in from the opening, as viewed from the bike trail.
