As we approach the end of our third week, all indications are that this was a really, really good year for birds that breed north of us and migrate south through the front range. We caught another 62 birds today, despite the heat and having to close 5 nets because of marauding raccoons. Wilson's Warblers, which pretty much always determine how big a year we have in terms of numbers, continue to come through at a very high pace. We've started to see comment-worthy high fat levels on both WIWAs and OCWAs, a sign that at least some of these migrating birds are doing really well. So, hope this all continues! Here is a break-down of the 62 birds today:

Ruby-crowned Kinglet 1
Orange-crowned Warbler 3
Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 4
MacGillivray's Warbler 2
Common Yellowthroat 3
Wilson's Warbler 40
Chipping Sparrow 4
Lincoln's Sparrow 1
We are open 6 days a week (closed Monday), weather permitting through October 14. We are opening nets at 6:30 and should have birds back at the station by 7:15. We will close most days by about 11:30, earlier this week because of the heat. School groups arrive most weekdays at about 9:30. The best time to visit (fewest people, most birds) is before 9:30 weekdays and Sundays.
