Here are selected highlights from a full day of birding in Las Animas, Baca and Prowers Counties yesterday Apr 24 (I am guiding a group of 7 birders around the state this week).
BENDIRE'S THRASHER (possible) - south of Higbee on Hwy 109 in a cholla field. Had the jizz of a Curve-billed Thrasher but smaller and straighter-billed. Will share photos when they become available. Precise location was entered on eBird.
Scott's Oriole - 1 flyby on Hwy 109 between Higbee and Kim.
Greater Roadrunner - 3 on drive between La Junta and Cottonwood Canyon.
Ferruginous Hawk - 1 dark phase just north of Kim on Hwy 109
Western Kingbird- plentiful throughout the region. We saw dozens.
Northern Parula- 1 singing male at Cottonwood Canyon in Baca County
Mountain Chickadee - 1 singing at Cottonwood Canyon (Baca County) seemed unusual.
Lark Bunting - only 1 small flock on M road in Baca County.
Wilson's Warbler - 2 or 3 birds at Lamar CC grove (LCCG)
Orange-crowned Warbler - 1 LCCG
Common Yellowthroat - 1 LCCG
Black-throated Gray Warbler - 1 LCCG
