A couple points. The attempts to discern hybrids, at least in a couple papers, looked for mixed pairs on the breeding grounds where both species were present. So... if populations of different phenotype don't interbreed though they share the same breeding areas, per the Basic Species Concept still favored by the AOU, then those two populations are considered separate species. When the AOU decides to lump the redpolls, then I will.
In any case, I happily try to discern subspecies, hybrids, and even some color morphs. I take joy in separating that which can be and am only modestly affected in the joy of such by precise taxonomic status.
