Birders,
I made a short visit to the Lamar Community College Woods (Prowers
County) on Sunday, January 5th. At the extreme south end, I found a male
Eastern Towhee. There are a couple of modern houses at the south end of
the woods. A cable extends north from yard of one of the houses, strung
between maroon posts. The Eastern Towhee was approximately 100 feet
north of the south end of the cable, under a couple of tall cedar trees.
It ranged to the east side of the cable in the bottom of dry Willow
Creek, in kochia weeds and low Russian Olives. It associated with
juncos, White-crowned Sparrows and some vocal (eastern) White-breasted
Nuthatches. I wouldn't be surprised if there are two Eastern Towhees
present.
I had one male Northern Cardinal farther north in the south half of the
grove.
