The Denver Urban CBC marked its 25th count with a record number of species – 94 – higher by three than the previous high count in 2003. The number of individuals, not final yet, so far totals 40,970 – about 2,000 more than the average for the 24 previous counts.
New species for the count: Yellow-headed Blackbird (one on the South Platte North, one at Rocky Mtn. Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge), Common Yellowthroat (heard but not seen), and Say's Phoebe (in the Sand Creek area).
Canada/Cackling Geese, always the most abundant species, dropped below the average of the last four years by 2,000 birds. Duck numbers exceeded the average by 2,000. The 62 Bald Eagles, third highest, almost doubled the average. Other high counts: an amazing 148 American Pipits, all in the northern section of the South Platte, 6526 Eurasian Starlings, 15 Double-crested Cormorants on the South Platte (previous high five), and nine Spotted Towhees – a high number for urban Denver.
Other unusual species: 3 White Pelicans at Cherry Creek State Park, 1 Barn Owl, near the Arsenal, 8 Wild Turkeys frisking in a parking lot filled with heavy construction equipment, a record 92 Red-tailed Hawks, only 112 Dark-eyed Juncos, 8 Rusty and 3 Brewer's Blackbirds on the South Platte.
