[cobirds] SLV update & Crane Fest announcement

Hello, Birders.

As John Rawinski has noted, the birds are back in the San Luis Valley!

This past weekend, Bill Schmoker and I were co-leaders for a workshop, based out of the Medano-Zapata Ranch (private), with The Nature Conservancy in Colorado. We saw several thousand Sandhill Cranes at Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge, Rio Grande County, and hundreds at other sites in Alamosa County. Also, at least 10 drake Cinnamon Teals were back at Monte Vista, and we saw small numbers of Mountain Bluebirds at various spots in Alamosa County. A special dawn highlight was hearing, and even briefly seeing, a highly vocal Western Screech-Owl, while, at the very same time, a Pinyon Jay flock was coming to life. Meanwhile, Great Horned Owls were sitting on nests, and Horned Larks were singing on territory.

Spring has sprung in The Valley!

This coming weekend, the first of the Sage Thrashers should be getting back, and perhaps even the first of the Sage Sparrows.

Speaking of this coming weekend...

...the Monte Vista Crane Festival is upon us. Here's the schedule of events:

I hope to see many of you this weekend at Monte Vista!
