[cobirds] Whitey-wing Returns Plus Crane Festival Results

Hi all:

Just an update on birdsy news from the San Luis Valley.

Crane Festival:  We had unbelievably great weather, warm and few winds, to celebrate the season of the sandhill crane. There were many visitors from all over the State and all seemed to have enjoyed the bus tours, craft fair and birdwalks. Some highlight birds of the weekend included Gr Wh fronted Goose, Ross's Goose, Cackling and Canada Geese, many assorted waterfowl, Brown Creeper, Sage Thrasher, and Loggerhead Shrike. There are two strange looking geese with white faces as well. They look mostly like a Greater white-fronted (typical plumage) that they hang around with.

The crowds have thinned but there is still great opportunities for birders and photographers. I estimate 10-15,000 sandhill cranes still present, and 6-8,000 geese, mostly Cackling.

Today, I led a group of birders from Colorado Springs (the MAMBA Group) out for a morning and we had an excellent morning up Rock Creek. Highlights included Red Crossbills, Pine Siskin, Greater Yellowlegs (yesterday) a pair of Red-tailed Hawks (that would have preferred more privacy!!!), Townsend's Solitaire, Goshawk, Cassin's Finches (hundreds), and Red-and White-breasted nuthatches. A FOY Williamson's Sapsucker was drumming out on its territory. Great day out with a great bunch of people.

Finally, over the weekend, my old friend "Whitey-wing" returned to our feeders. He is a Red-winged Blackbird with  strange white primaries on his left side. It was good to know he survived another year! We first saw him in 2010, and he was an adult then.
